This book was released on 1985-06-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "International politics is not a cumulative subject in which the latest book makes all the others obsolete . . .The assumption underlying these pages is that our understanding of international politics is more likely to be improved by reflecting upon and reworking what we already know about the subject, than by topping up our knowledge with either more detailed research or more contemporary analysis. . . "Each of the chapters deals with a different aspect of international theory . . .A discerning reader may become aware of certain unifying threads running through and linking all of the chapters. They have all been written out of a conviction that explanation and not prescription is the only proper role of the political scientist; and they all reflect my skepticism about the 'scientific' nature of international politics." — John C. Garnett In a refreshing and clear analysis, Dr. Garnett looks at the nature of international theory and the problems associated with its development. Drawing from many disciplines, he examines fundamental questions in a new way, giving a measure of commonsense to a subject which has become complicated and esoteric. His use of analogies and quotations bring his subject alive in a study that will be of interest to those involved in both the social sciences and politics.

Download or read book Know Your Enemy written by David C. Engerman and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2009-11-20 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As World War II Ended, few Americans in government or academia knew much about the Soviet Union. It was, as Winston Churchill had famously noted, "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma." To address this dangerous gap in knowledge, as David C. Engerman shows in this book, a network of scholars, soldiers, spies, and philanthropists created an enterprise known as Soviet Studies." "Bringing together iconoclasts, geniuses, lone wolves, and careerists to analyze an entire nation and its ruling ideas, Soviet Studies attracted great minds from the left, right, and center. Among them are controversial individuals ranging from George Kennan to Margaret Mead to Zbigniew Brzezinski, not to mention historians Sheila Fitzpatrick and Richard Pipes.Together they created the knowledge that helped fight the Cold War and define Cold War thought. Ranging from the end of World War II to the collapse of the USSR in 1991, Know Your Enemy shows that Soviet Studies became a vibrant intellectual enterprise, studying not just the Soviet threat, but Soviet society and culture, as well as Russian history and literature." --Book Jacket.

Download or read book Social Science and Policy Challenges written by Georgios Papanagnou and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Producing scientific knowledge that can inform solutions and guide policy-making is one of the most important functions of social science. Nonetheless, if social science is to become more relevant and influential so as to impact on the drawing and execution of policy, certain measures need to be taken to narrow its distance from the policy sphere. This decision is less obvious than it seems. Both research and experience have proved that policy-making is a complex, often sub-rational, interactive process that involves a wide range of actors such as decision makers, bureaucrats, researchers, organized interests, citizen and civil society representatives and research brokers. In addition, social science often needs to defend both its relevance to policy and its own scientific status. Moving away from instrumental visions of the link between social research and policy, this collective volume aims to highlight the more constructed nature of the use of social knowledge.
