Book excerpt: Learning outcomes for twenty-first century higher education in the U.S. include graduating students capable of functioning effectively across cultures. The growth in campus internationalization efforts stems from an emphasis on graduates' ability to navigate a complex and rapidly changing world. Strategies to achieve internationalization goals focus on expanding student participation in educational programs outside of the U.S. and enrolling greater numbers of international students. Although, research shows global learning on-campus is possible, resources and attention targeted toward intercultural learning on campus are more limited. Using narrative inquiry, this study explores international college students' experiences making friends in the first year of college in the U.S. as well as the influence, benefits, and challenges of making friends. The findings highlight the value of friendship development for international students and the opportunity to revisit internationalization strategies and goals. Each student expressed worry about making friends in the U.S., that making friends in college was different, that they pursued friendships based on their perception of commonalities, and the benefit of reflecting about the experience of making friends. The majority also expressed desire to develop intercultural friendships. Their experiences making friends were associated with a wide variety curricular or co-curricular activities, with a few occurring before arriving to the U.S. Most students shared positive overall experiences, conveyed satisfaction with their experiences making friends, and developed intercultural friendships. Most students also expressed their friendships enriched their overall college experience, their experiences making friends was connected to stress or mental health experiences, and their intercultural friendship experiences were both rewarding and challenging. A few students with less successful friendship development experiences conveyed a negative impact on their overall college experience and their overall emotional wellbeing. This study highlights the value for institutions to be aware of international students' expectations and experiences making friends, gauge their intercultural skills, and their experiences making friends early in their academic career as well as the necessity to promote a culture of inclusion on campus and provide ample opportunities and adequate support for students to develop intercultural relationships. Their experiences reinforce that intercultural friendships can stimulate global learning for all students.

Vander Tavares investigates how the students experience life in the host community, construct their multiple identities, and develop their proficiency in the English language. Additionally, Tavares examines the ways in which the institutional context impacts the students’ experiences by foregrounding the voices of domestic students, faculty and support staff, and their experiences and perspectives on international students, multiculturalism, and multilingualism. Drawing from theories of cultural and social psychology, post-structuralism, multilingualism, and a sociocognitive approach to second language acquisition, this project presents rich ethnographic portraits of the students’ experiences. Book excerpt: The number of international students on U.S. campuses has increased more than 84 percent over the past decade (IIE, 2016). Although it has been well-established that interaction and friendship with local students is a key element for international student adjustment to a foreign university, few studies have grappled with how these intercultural relationships develop, and even fewer have studied intercultural relationships from the domestic students' point of view. This dissertation uses a qualitative case study approach to add to this small, but growing, body of literature. Grounded in a conceptual framework consisting of Allport's (1954) contact hypothesis and its more recent updates by Pettigrew, Tropp, Wagner, and Christ (2011), and the principles of social identity theory (Brown, 2000; Tajfel, 1981) this study sought examine relationship development between domestic students and international students over the course of an academic year. Ten first-year domestic students with at least one international student roommate in a residential hall at UCLA were interviewed twice over the course of the year to gain insight into their intercultural interactions on campus, particularly the relationship(s) with their international roommate(s). The findings indicate that domestic students perceive and experience intercultural interaction and friendship as a complex process with multiple layers of facilitating and inhibiting factors. While the experience of living with an international student did offer domestic students a direct opportunity for intercultural interaction and friendship, sharing a living space alone was not enough to guarantee meaningful interaction or the development of any type of relationship. Multiple layers of facilitating and inhibiting factors played a significant role in the development of intercultural friendships. Perceived cultural similarity seemed to be the most salient of the facilitators, and perceived cultural distance the most potent of the inhibitors. Despite the lack of relationship development in some of the pairs, many participants did demonstrate signs of intercultural learning, at least conceptually, over the course of the year. However, many participants were still unsure how to apply the abstract concepts associated with diversity and interculturalism that they learned in concrete ways. The findings presented here suggest that in order to better facilitate intercultural interaction and friendship among a diverse student body, institutions may need to be more deliberate in their programming to offer students not only ways to increase their intercultural knowledge, but also opportunities to practice and develop their intercultural skills.
