Book excerpt: Fifty-one soybean cultivars were tested in the 1980 and 1981 Internationa Soybean Variety Evaluation Experiments (ISVEX). The experiment sites were divided into 13 environmental zones which were defined by latitude and altitude. Three sets of cultivars were sent out: Group A to the tropics; Group B, subtropics; and Group C, temperate regions. The performance characteristics: yild, days to maturity, plant height, height to the first pod, seed size, protein content, oil content and several other characteristics are presented for all locations where a given cultivar was grown. The relative stability of the performance of a cultivar over a wide range of environments was determined. It was found that the relative performance estimates for cultivars were quite consistent in different groups and years. The association of the various characteristics was studied by calculating the correlation coefficients among the characters measured at each location. Yield was positively correlated with number of plants harvested and seed weight and negatively associated with seed quality. These and other relantionships can help plant breeders determine if it may be difficult to get the combination of characters desired in new cultivars. Days to maturity is one of the most important characteristics in determining whether a cultivar is well adapted at a given location. Book excerpt: A large group of soybean cultivars of diverse genetic composition was evaluated under a wide range of environmental conditions in the Fourth International Soybean Variety Experiment (ISVEX) during 1976. Yields of 2000-4000 kg/ha of good quality seeds were consistently obtained under tropical and sub-tropical conditions. Change in altitude (day- and night temperature) had more effect on plant height and on days flowering and maturity than didi change in latitude (day lenght). Cultivars in groups 00 - VIII flowered earlier and did not grow as tall when grown at sites closer to the equator. Later maturing cultivars frequently, but not always, outyielded early maturing types. This presents problems in developing high-yielding cultivars which also mature early, since these types are frequently required for intensive cropping systems. Lodging and shattering were not serious problems with the cultivars evaluated. Grain quality decreased under conditions of high humidity and temperature, especially near harvest time. The effectiveness of rhizobia, particularly when related to yield, was difficult to evaluate which suggests problems of adaptability and persistence of strains. Cultivars introduced through ISVEX consistently outyield local entries. Multi-year summaries indicated the superiority of Davis, Forrest, Bossier, Williams, Clark 63, Cobb, Improved Pelican, and Jupiter under tropical conditions. The potential of Calland, Columbus, Essex, Hill, Ransom, and Pickett 71 may reflected in future multi-year summaries.
