Book excerpt: Now entering its second decade of publication, Welsh Writing in English: A Yearbook of Critical Essays is the only academic journal devoted solely to the critical study of the English-language literature of Wales. The Yearbook seeks to cover the whole chronological sweep of Welsh writing in English, and essays published to date include papers ranging from discussion of the earliest Welsh literature written in English--Ieuan ab Hywel Swrdwal in the fifteenth century--to contemporary writers like Gillian Clarke, Niall Griffiths and Christopher Meredith. Emphasis is, though, on the writing of the twentieth century and we have published important new essays on such major figures as Dylan Thomas, Glyn Jones, Vernon Watkins, Alun Lewis and R.S. Thomas. The Yearbook consists of new (peer-reviewed) essays by critics in universities in Wales and the U.K. as a whole, as well as America and beyond, and, while the ultimate criterion is always quality, the journal seeks to publish work both by established scholars in the field and by young researchers publishing the results of recent new work. As well as some eight full-length articles in each volume, the journal also publishes shorter factual pieces--new discoveries, new manuscripts, etc.--in a "Notes" section, while the occasional "Forum" section seeks to stimulate lively critical debate arising from published papers. Each issue also contains an annual bibliography of new critical material which has appeared during the previous year. In its ten years of publication the Yearbook has become a benchmark for discussion of Wales's English-language literature, as well as for the exploration of the links between the two literatures of Wales. A number of the essays first published in the Yearbook are already widely cited as key discussions of their subject and a number have been reprinted. The Yearbook is a journal which aims to be lively, original, challenging, controversial and to be appeal not just to specialists but to be accessible to the interested general reader.

For Jones, the twentieth century was a period of crisis, an age of conflict, disillusionment and cultural decay, all of which he saw as evidence of the decline of Western civilisation. Across his lifetime, Jones would create a dynamic vision of ancient Rome in an attempt both to understand and to challenge this situation. His reimagining of Rome was not founded on a classical education. Instead, it was fashioned from his lived experience, extensive reading, and—most importantly—his engagement with four areas of contemporary discourse that were themselves built upon intricate and conflicting representations of Rome: British political rhetoric, cyclical history, the Catholic cultural revival, and the Welsh nationalist movement. Tracing Jones's developing approach to Rome across these contexts can provide a way into his art and thought. Whether in his poetic fragments, watercolours, essays, letters, marginalia or unique painted inscriptions, Jones strove to question, complicate and remake Rome's relationship with modernity. In this way, Rome appears in Jones's works both as a symbol of transhistorical imperialism, totalitarianism, and the mechanisation of life, and simultaneously as the cultural and religious progenitor of the West, and in particular, of Wales, with which artists must creatively reconnect if decline was to be avoided.

It argues that the novels critique the form of masculine hegemony propagated by structural patriarchy serving the material demands of industrial capitalism. Each depicts characters confined to a limited repertoire of culturally endorsed behaviourial norms – such as displays of power, decisiveness and self-control – which prohibit the expression and cultivation of the subjective self. Within the social organisation of industrial capitalism, the working-class characters are, in practice, reduced to dispensable functionaries at work while, in theory, they are accorded the status of patriarchally-sanctioned principals at home. Ideologically subservient and ‘feminised’ in one context, they are ideologically dominant and ‘masculinised’ in another. As they negotiate, resist or strive to reconcile the irreconcilable demands of such gendered practices, recurring patterns of exclusion, inadequacy and mental instability are made evident in their representation.
