Book excerpt: German unification is changing central Europe, the EC and international economic and political relations. Prosperous West Germany with its "social market economy" has absorbed the socialist GDR which is facing a complex systemic tranformation process. This volume analyzes the causes, developments, and processes that are associated with German unification. The merger of the two Germanies provides a unique laboratory like example of institutional and economic changes against which established economic theoreis and economic policy concepts can be tested. German unification raises, of course, many new questions for Grmany itself, Europe, and the whole international community. Will the enlarged Germany become a new economic giant in Europe and can the FRG maintain stability and prosperity? What macroeconomic and structural problems are faced by the new Germany and what are the effects for trade, investment, and growth in Germany`s partner countries? Will East Germany catch up with the West and can this process serve as a model forEastern Europe? What are the views of Poland and the USSR, and what implications arise for Western Europe and the United States? Finally, how isthe triangular relationship between the U.S., the EC, and Japan affected, and how does this affect the United States` ability to organize economic cooperation with Japan, Germany, and other leading economies?
Book Synopsis German Unification and the International Economy by : Bernhard Heitger
Download or read book German Unification and the International Economy written by Bernhard Heitger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-23 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1990s are already witnessing major changes in the international macroeconomy. The savings of the world's two major creditor nations, Japan and Germany, are likely to shrink further whilst investment demand, particularly in Eastern Europe, rises dramatically. The resulting global investment flows will have profound macroeconomic and growth effects, including the potential for higher real interest rates and resource shifts. German Unification and the International Macroeconomy examines these issues, taking Germany as its focus. Germany has been uniquely involved in these changes and its experience is important in its own right. It also has wider implications, particularly for the further integration of east and west Europe. The authors explore both these and spillovers for the global macroeconomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper advances the hypothesis that the EUS crisis was caused by German unification. The unification has implied a massive resource demand which parallels the US resource demand following Reagan's tax reforms in the eighties. The resource demand revised the German interest rates relative to the rest of the world which brought about devaluations of other European currencies. The paper identifies those European currencies which currently are undervalued.
Book Synopsis Economic Implications of German Unification for the Federal Republic and the Rest of the World by : Mr.Paul R. Masson
Download or read book Economic Implications of German Unification for the Federal Republic and the Rest of the World written by Mr.Paul R. Masson and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1990-09-01 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic effects of German unification are first discussed in the context of a global saving/investment model. Next, simulations of MULTIMOD are presented, suggesting for the FRG an initial increase in long-term real interest rates equal to 3/4 of a percentage point, increased output, a temporary half-point rise in inflation, a modest real appreciation of the deutsche mark, and a reduction of the (combined GDR and FRG) current account surplus equal to 2 percent of GNP. Effects on the rest of the world seem to be relatively small. Different policies are examined within the EMS, and other simulation studies are surveyed.

Download or read book German Unification written by Mr.Paul R. Masson and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1996-05-01 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reviews early simulations of the effects of German unification using three different rational-expectations multi-country models. Despite significant differences in their structures and in the implementations of the unification shock, the models delivered a number of common results that proved reasonably accurate guides to the direction and magnitude of the effects of unification on key macroeconomic variables. Unification was expected to give rise to an increase in German aggregate demand that would put upward pressure on output, inflation, and the exchange rate, and downward pressure on the current account balance. The model simulations also highlighted contractionary effects of high German interest rates on EMS countries.

Book Synopsis World Power Forsaken by : John Duffield
Download or read book World Power Forsaken written by John Duffield and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1998-08-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does German unification imply for international politics? Many commentators have speculated about how a united Germany will use its new found power and influence on the world stage, and for good reason. Because of its size, central location, and strong economy, Germany will inevitably exert considerable influence over developments in Europe, if not beyond. Drawing on interviews and other primary source materials, this comprehensive study examines in detail each of the central issues of Germany’s security policy since 1990: its promotion of political and economic reform in the former Soviet bloc, its efforts to maintain and strengthen European security institutions, the transformation of Germany’s armed forces, and its responses to international crises and conflicts, including the debate over German participation in foreign military actions. Rejecting claims that German policy is becoming nationalized and militarized, the author argues that Germany’s actions have in fact been characterized by considerable restraint and continuity with the past, notwithstanding its much greater potential freedom of action after the Cold War. In order to make sense of this record, the book presents a general framework of analysis that promises to be useful for explaining the security policies of a variety of states. It then shows how a variety of influences both in Germany’s external environment and within Germany itself have importantly shaped German security policy since unification. In sharp contrast to the realist approaches that have dominated security studies, the book highlights the roles played by international institutions and Germany’s distinct postwar political culture in molding German state behavior. In a final chapter, the author discusses the likely future course of German security policy and the implications of his analysis for the theoretical study of national security policy.
Book Synopsis German Unification and Its Ramifications by : Ronald D. Asmus
Download or read book German Unification and Its Ramifications written by Ronald D. Asmus and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1991 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses the political, economic, foreign, and security policy implications of German unification and draws the central conclusion that unification has fundamentally transformed Germany's position and role in Europe. The author identifies four dangers facing German policymakers: (1) residual uncertainties of German domestic politics in the wake of unification; (2) the possibility that Germany will not engineer its political and economic integration into the European Community as quickly or as comprehensively as it hopes; (3) the chance that Germany will be overwhelmed by the problems of political and economic reconstruction farther to the east; and (4) Germany's need to develop and sustain a satisfactory relationship with the Soviet Union when the Soviet state is fragmented. The U.S. role in Germany and Europe will not be one of a controller or mentor, but rather one of a key leadership partner in the Western world; the United states will be a key interlocutor with the Soviet Union on security issues.
Book Synopsis The Question of German Unification by : Imanuel Geiss
Download or read book The Question of German Unification written by Imanuel Geiss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The course of recent German history has been volatile. Events in Eastern Europe, the collapse of European Communism and German Re-Unification has brought issues of Germany's status into the arena of world politics. The Question of German Unification presents an introduction to the last two hundred years of German history and addresses questions raised by the status of Germany as a single or split national state. Imanuel Geiss: * argues that Germany has fluctuated all too frequently, and catastrophically, between being the power centre of Europe or a power vacuum * describes the special features of German history and looks at Germany within a European framework * analyses the political, economic and social aspects of German Nationalism as well as the impact of the collapse of Communism on Germany, through detailing long-term structures and processes * includes discussion of recent political events as well as a chronology and further reading. Imanuel Geiss reflects on the irrationalities of German history, surveys how they have been explained by historians, and provides a succinct and readable account of the complex issues involved.
