Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the air travel industry begins to emerge from the COVID-19 restrictions, new research must be undertaken to survey the changing business landscape. This book examines existing air travel literature, illustrates the current theories in the field, and suggests research methods for integrating them in fieldwork. The book begins by surveying the landscape of air travel research and examining key theoretical frameworks such as grounded theory, institutional theory, prospect theory, and the theory of planned behavior. It then explores when qualitative and quantitative research methods are appropriate for use in air travel research, and how they can be applied successfully. Gathered contributors from Southeast Asia and the Middle East highlight some of the latest issues, including the impacts of COVID-19 on airfreight, airline catering, and passenger perceptions of security and safety. Future directions for research are also proposed. This book will appeal to researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of air transport or aviation management, tourism marketing, and consumer behavior.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 96.0, , course: International Logistics, language: English, abstract: Air transportation is a key factor in long-term economic development, growth, and overall success. Like other forms of transportation, air travel simply provides a link between two or more different locations; though, air travel separates itself by offering a very quick alternative to travel vast distances. The unique nature of air transport has proved its significance in developed nations and the increased connectivity has recently demonstrated an even greater impact for developing economies. There are, however, substantial challenges in producing respectable air transport infrastructure in developing nations. In fact, there are also many difficulties involving air travel that affect developed nations as well. Infrastructure, costs, regulation, and sustainability are some of the more noteworthy concerns of international air transportation. Understanding the problem is the first step to creating a solution and, with tangible collaborative efforts, more efficient air transportation networks can begin to benefit the international community.

Book excerpt: There are broadly four strategic issues in aviation: safety; security; environmental protection; and sustainability in air transport. These issues will remain for a long time as key considerations in the safe, regular, efficient and economic development of air transport. Within these four broad categories come numerous subjects that require attention of the aviation industry as well as the States. In six chapters, this book engages in detailed discussions on these subjects as they unravelled in events of recent years. The issue of safety is addressed first, following an introduction of the regulatory regime covering the four issues. Within the area of safety, the book covers such areas as safety management systems, safety and aeromedicine, safety and meteorology, the use of airspace, unmanned aircraft systems and safety oversight audits. In the security area, subjects covered include cyber terrorism, the integrity of travel documents, full body scanners, civil unrest and aviation, the suppression of unlawful acts on board aircraft and the financing of terrorism. The chapter on the environment focuses mainly on climate change - particularly on carbon credits, market based measures, the carbon market and emissions trading schemes and their effect on air transport. Finally, the chapter on sustainability discusses in detail market access along with such issues as slot allocation, open skies, the use of alternative fuels as an economic measure and corporate foresight. The concluding chapter wraps up with a discussion on where air transport is headed.

Book excerpt: Noise due to aircraft was considered to be a potential problem as far back as 1952, when the Doolittle Commission established by President Truman urged that a major effort be made to reduce aircraft noise. With the 'advent of the jet age in the late 1950's and the concomitant spread of suburbs towards airports in major cities such as New York, Denver, and Minneapolis-St. Paul, many more people became exposed to noise, and concern and anger intensified. Although only a small percentage (estimated at about 2-3%) of the total population of the U.S. is affected by high noise levels, these people and their representatives have been quite vocal about their dissatisfaction with noise abatement progress, even though technological advances have reduced the noise emanating from aircraft engines. As a result, the airports, the communities, and the federal government are seeking additional measures that will further diminish the noise impact of aircraft and airport operations. The dilemma is to decrease noise with the minimum economic disruptions to commerce, the community, and the aviation industry. Since very few people like to travel during the night hours (approximately 10 p.m. - 7 a.m.), and indeed very few aircraft operations take place (less than 5% of total operations at most airports), an environmentally and politically appealing option to diminish the effect of aircraft noise is to ban airplane operations during nighttime hours. However, a disproportionate number of operations at night are dedicated to cargo (about 50% of scheduled domestic all-cargo flights), and it is upon the air cargo industry and those users dependent upon nighttime flights that the major burden of a curfew would fall. The benefits of curfews are apparent; the economic penalties associated with them are not. To address this issue, the Flight Transportation Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology hosted a week-long conference at Jupiter, Florida, in January, 1979, on the impact of airport use restrictions on air freight. This conference was sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. More than 70 participants, including some 50 panelists and speakers, represented various viewpoints of the air cargo industry: the users, the airlines, the airports, the communities, and various governmental agencies.

In addition to explaining the fundamentals, this book now takes the reader to the leading edge of the discipline, using past and present trends to forecast future challenges the industry may face and encouraging the reader to really think about the decisions a manager implements. The Seventh Edition brings the text right up to date with a new opening chapter, titled 'The Airline Industry: Trends, Challenges and Strategies', setting the context for all that follows within the book, and a new section within 'International Aviation' that explores the new airline business models. New and updated material has been added throughout the text and overall presents a more international perspective. Arranged in sharply focused parts and accessible sections, the exposition is clear and reader-friendly. Air Transportation: A Management Perspective is suitable for almost all aviation programs that feature business and management. Its student-friendly structure and style make it highly suitable for modular courses and distance-learning programmes, or for self-directed study and continuing personal professional development.
