Book excerpt: Excerpt from Internal Secretion and the Ductless Glands The first edition, issued in 1912, has been out of print since 1914, but for various reasons the publication of the second edition has been delayed. During this time many aspects of the subject of internal secretion have undergone material changes. These I hope will find adequate expression in the new version of the book. If I have not been so optimistic and expansive in the treatment of certain topics as other writers on the same subjects, it is because I am convinced that a surer road to sound knowledge lies in tho direction of rigid criticism and a reasoned scepticism. After much doubt and hesitation I have decided to omit the bibliography. Tho objections to such a course are obvious, but I found that to review the whole of the literature has become impossible, and to make a selection involves a task so invidious and delicate and at the same time laborious that I have not had the courage to attempt it. The omission of the references to literature will, however, have the advantage of making the book easier to read, and for a large number of students and practitioners will, I hope, not constitute a serious drawback. Investigators who have access to the first edition will find no difficulty in completing a survey of the literature up to the present time. The papers since 1917 are abstracted in Endocrinology, and since 1915 in Physiological Abstracts. Names are still mentioned freely in the text for the reasons that this arrangement involves less re-writing, and that it leaves the responsibility in tho hands of the original author on numerous topics in which I have had no opportunity of gaining firsthand information. The present edition contains much new matter, but, by re-arrangement and some curtailment of historical and controversial sections, it has been possible to avoid increasing the size of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Endocrine Organs: An Introduction to the Study of Internal Secretion The time at my disposal for the lectures precluded anything more than a passing mention of some of the many workers who have contributed to our knowledge of this, the newest, development of physiology; and in republishing, it has not been deemed desirable unduly to extend the' references to literature, seeing that they are already to be found in such standard works as Biedl's Innere Sekretion, in which the bibliography occupies more than 250 large octavo pages, and Swale Vincent's Internal Secretions and the Ductless Glands, where they run to over 2000 titles. Since the appearance of those works much new matter Has been added; and more than one long list of literature has appeared in monographs deal ing with special internally secreting organs. It is to publications of a comprehensive character such as these that the scientific worker will turn for detailed information. The aim of this little book is less ambitious: it is designed to supply a concise account of our present knowledge for the benefit of students and practitioners who may be desirous of obtaining more information regarding the internal secretions than is afforded by the ordinary text-books of physiology, but have not the time or opportunity to peruse extensive monographs or consult original articles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Internal Secretions and the Principles of Medicine, Vol. 1 The subject matter of the work has also been revised and, where deemed of interest to the reader, enriched with newer facts. Among these subjects may be mentioned the chromafiin system, the functional relationship between the kidneys and the adrenal system, and the internal secretion of the former. The generative glands of both sexes are studied from a new stand point, both as regards the functions of their internal secretions and the influence of the ductless glands on sex characteristics. The section on organotherapy has also been revised, the sub jects which are now receiving attention, corpus luteum and pituitary products, having been practically rewritten. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glands Regulating Personality: A Study of the Glands of Internal Secretion in Relation to the Types of Human Nature This book was conceived about ten years ago. The first edition appeared about seven years ago. It soon became evident that a revised edition would have to be written as several new striking advances in the field of the internal secretions occurred immediately after its publication - such as the discovery of insulin by Banting and Best. Since then, discoveries and applications in all the various branches of endocrinology - the science of the ductless glands - have come in so many directions, that a rewriting of the book to include this progress became compulsory. The book was conceived as a statement of the physical basis of personality and the dynamics of its energy in terms of the chemistry of the body. The ductless glands and their chemical products, the internal secretions, as dominators of the expression of personality, interested me early in my studies of biochemistry. The data of physiology and pathology concerning them as well as the clinical phenomena presented when they were hyperactive or defective seemed to be overwhelming in their multitude and complexity. I proceeded to collect them, to coordinate and to classify them. At the same time I studied my patients, children, women, and men, under all sorts of conditions and circumstances, with the most varied ailments and illnesses and peculiarities, for signs of underlying deviations of their ductless glands. I became convinced of their fundamental importance, as controllers and regulators of that ensemble of forces, attributes, habits, and attitudes which is sometimes known as character, individuality, or disposition: but for which I think the best name in English, used as well as in German, French, Spanish, and Italian, is - personality, defined in the dictionaries as the sum of ones qualities of body, mind, and character regarded as a patterned whole. There are some twenty thousand separate, technical articles that have been published concerning the problems and facts in the field of the internal secretions, and several hundred books. All this material had to be receptively explored and sifted, whenever possible at first hand, and then its value considered.
