Two works examine the Sudan of the late nineteenth century, a time when Anglo-Egyptian domination was enforced on the country; two works detail the Sudan of the twentieth century, looking at its politics, economy and society; and a last work traces the roots of modern Sudan through the historic tribes of the region.

Book excerpt: By the mid-1980s, Sudan’s economy, society and political framework were on the point of disintegration. Civil war was exacerbating the effects of an already major famine. An unpopular government was resorting to ever more extreme measures in order to remain in power. The imposition of a particularly oppressive and hash interpretation of sharia law was heightening racial and religious tensions. Internationally, Sudan was faced by a debt crisis which was apparently insoluble, and which threatened to undermine completely what was left of the economy. This book, first published in 1988, examines the complex economic and social processes which led to this situation – emphasising the part played by the state itself. The book combines detailed multi-disciplinary analyses of Sudan in the post-colonial era with a consideration of possibilities for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike African slavery in Europe and the Americas, slavery in the Sudan and other parts of Africa persisted well into the twentieth century. Sudanese slaves served Sudanese masters until the region was conquered by the Turks, who practiced slavery on a larger, institutional scale. When the British took over the Sudan in 1898, they officially emancipated the slaves, yet found it impossible to replace their labor in the country’s economy. This pathfinding study explores the process of emancipation and the development of wage labor in the Sudan under British colonial rule. Ahmad Sikainga focuses on the fate of ex-slaves in Khartoum and on the efforts of the colonial government to transform them into wage laborers. He probes into what colonial rule and city life meant for slaves and ex-slaves and what the city and its people meant for colonial officials. This investigation sheds new light on the legacy of slavery and the status of former slaves and their descendants. It also reveals how the legacy of slavery underlies the current ethnic and regional conflicts in the Sudan. It will be vital reading for students of race relations and slavery, colonialism and postcolonialism, urbanization, and labor history in Africa and the Middle East.

They do things differently there, particularly when it comes to food. Lucio Galletto grew up in Liguria—at the eastern end of the Riviera di Levante (coast of the rising sun). He didn't realize how special his region was until he fell in love with an Australian girl and traveled 12,000 kilometers to be with her. In 2008 Lucio, and writer David Dale, along with photographer Paul Green, returned to the birthplace of ravioli and pesto and wild-greens pie to investigate how the cooking of Lucio's region had evolved during his 25-year absence. They found a new breed of chefs, farmers, and fishermen adapting traditions to the environmental concerns of the 21st century. Still using the wonderful array of local herbs, vegetables, and seafood, they apply a lighter touch and a more adventurous spirit. In this stunningly photographed book, Lucio brings us the fruits of his travels—180 delicious recipes that respect the experience of the past and anticipate the demands of the future; dishes that are fun to cook, beautiful to look at, a pleasure to share, and kind to the body. And, importantly, that pay homage to the sunny Riviera di Levante from which Lucio's culinary journey began. This book was the winner of the 2008 Gourmand Award for Best Italian Cuisine Book (Australian Category), and the 2009 Cordon d'Or Cuisine Award for Best Illustrated Culinary Book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration is one of the infamous phenomenon that represent grieve problem in modern world. Our present analysis is based on the conception that external migration represents an intricate crisis for developed countries flooded by illegal immigrants. It is correlated with the socioeconomic internal crisis evolving in developing countries. The case study here is on the impacts of imbalanced development on Sudan's economy and the resultant internal migration towards the urban areas specially Khartoum generated a crisis situation. The capital city of Sudan is not prepared for the floods of internally displaced, economic refugees' invasion. The proper estimation for the annual demographic increase is about 10%. The city contains more than 20% of the country's population who have little chance for job opportunities, housing, medical care or education. The paper concludes that country's resources should be devoted for rural and regional development. Otherwise, social diseases may explode with little that can be done to mend.
