Based on the latest scientific research and successful conflict management practices, it provides theoretical insights and practical, self-reflective exercises, role-plays and case studies on conflict, mediation, intercultural mediation, and solution-finding in conflict mediation. The book serves both as a self-learning tool to expand personal competences and cultural sensitivity, and as training material for seminars, workshops, secondary, advanced and higher education and vocational training. It is a valuable contribution to the fields of intercultural conflict mediation and conflict management, intercultural communication, intercultural training and coaching. This is a book about practicing – the applied practice of competent conflict crafts in diverse intercultural contexts. Conflict practitioners, mediators, and intercultural trainers would be inspired by Professor Claude-Hélène Mayer’s creative integration of relevant intercultural models with do-able conflict strategies and in reaching intergroup harmony with reflexivity and cultural resonance. --- Professor Stella Ting-Toomey, Human Communication Studies, California State University at Fullerton, USA, and Co-Editor of The SAGE Handbook of Conflict Communication, 2e Given the difficulty and complexity of successful intercultural collaboration and conflict mediation, this is a much-needed addition to cross-cultural positive psychology. It is rich in content and training. I highly recommend it for teaching, corporate training, and for executive coaches. --- Professor Paul T.P. Wong, President International Network on Personal Meaning and President Meaning-Centered Counselling Institute, Toronto, Canada Intercultural conflict resolution is a critically important task in this modern world. This book by Professor Mayer is a welcome handbook on how to use mediation to resolve those conflicts. It should be in the library of every conflict mediator. My congratulations to Professor Mayer for her important work. --- Dan Landis, Founding President, International Academy of Intercultural Research, Affiliate Professor of Psychology, University of Hawaii

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing international interconnection of the world’s economics has the consequence that more and more German employees have to stay abroad for a longer time. The south-east Asian and especially the Chinese economic environment are gaining a bigger and bigger role – also for the German textile market due to a strong economic growth, the low wage level. Especially in the manufacturing branch this is an important decision factor - at approximately € 0, 32 per hour and the size of a potential market. The low wage level will not rise in the near future but the fact that China’s economic importance is growing requires a new kind of approach to enter the market in any kind of way. Since Germany is a country with only few raw materials the requirements of manpower have changed. During the last years the persons in the responsible departments became aware that China does require special skills regarding management, communication and intercultural interactions. A relatively new area of research has become more and more important for the human resource departments in German companies: the intercultural preparation of employees and expatriates who are the ones that fill the key positions for the exchange of information between the parent company and the office abroad. For a successful expatriation a profound preparation regarding intercultural communication and behaviour is needed. The better the preparation the better will be the expatriation for the company and the expatriate. A failed dispatch abroad can cost the company approximately € 125.000, - per employment. Furthermore the consequences for the expatriate can also be disastrous: social and professional decline and e.g. depression. This work has the aim to answer the following questions: How does well designed training programs look like? What kind of possibilities do exist? Who does offer intercultural training in Germany? How are employees in German textile and clothing companies prepared in practice compared to other industries? Is the investment in intercultural training useful, efficient and worth it?

Book excerpt: Whatever their industry of origin, all companies are facing the same challenge to a greater or lesser degree: globalization. It is becoming more and more evident that companies need to plan ahead and anticipate coming developments if they are to be successful in the future. Today, it is crucial to establish a solid competitive position in the global arena. There is no doubt that a corporate culture that is open to innovation and shaped by global thinking, plays a key role in this context. A culture in which representatives of different countries und cultures can come together, anticipating and understanding the cultural challenges, creates the foundation of any international business. A global view on intercultural management will be the key to successfully doing business in diverse cultural environments.

Book excerpt: Our culturally shaped values influence the way we work as well as our behaviour towards our colleagues, superiors and business partners – whether we care to acknowledge it or not. Not surprisingly, then, intercultural competence has come to be one of the key skills of the 21st century: anyone seeking success on the international business scene needs a navigation system to guide them through the complexities of other cultures' modes of interaction, behaviour and communication. In this book, Ute Clement – a seasoned consultant for international corporations – presents a range of methods and concepts for dealing with cross-cultural work situations. She also explains the basics of systemic intercultural consultancy by reference to a wealth of experiential anecdotes. The book evokes the pleasure of exploring cultural differences and encourages an open attitude towards other cultures. The knowledge it presents enables the reader to develop a sense of how to work comfortably in and between different cultures so that new options become available for dealing with everyday work situations.*"A combination of theoretical clarity, vivid examples and useful tools make this book a compelling and informative read for all those who cross cultures in their work."*Corinna Refsgaard, Vice President – Head of HR Cassidian Systems, EADS Deutschland GmbH

This book was released on 2013-11-06 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthology from the year 2013 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, , language: English, abstract: Canada has only recently become a topic of literary interest in modern grammar schools in Hessen. It was thus logical that schools, teachers and students were confronted with a fairly unknown topic that belongs to what is referred too as English-speaking literature. Canadian literature is, strictly speaking, part of what is commonly considered to be ‘Literature of the Colonies‘, a term that sums up literature from Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Canada in this respect still holds a key position for European readers simply because of its historic links to England and France and its deep roots in native elements, all of which seem to have enriched its historical, cultural and literary variety. All three influences have contributed to the key term of present Canadian literature which seems to focus on the concept of survival and its manifold presentations in past and present day Canadian writing. It is thus not astonishing to spot this notion of survival in all types of writing, and detective stories, in general, also do not seem to be an exception. It is therefore natural for the reader to trace and find this notion in Louise Penny’s novels, too. Louise Penny herself is considered to be one, if not the most outstanding contemporary Canadian representative of this type of writing, and it was simply a question of time when she came into the focus of public attention. Books like Still Life (2005), Dead Cold (2006), The Cruellest Month (2007), The Murder Stone (2008), The Brutal Telling (2009), Bury Your Dead (2010), A Trick of the Light (2011) soon gained her the reputation of a fine writer. Most of her novels, however, include another aspect central for modern language learning in the socalled Oberstufe. The talk here is about what is generally called ‘Intercultural Teaching and Learning‘ because the critical reader working here gains a lot of historical, cultural and social insight into Canada and the Canadian soul. It is at this crossroad where Penny steps in. With the elegance of a Shakespearian pen of the 21st century she presents various characters and thus teachers and students alike can learn a lot about the different dimensions – individual and collective – of the Canadian psyche. This results in knowledge, feeling and respect for Canada and Canadian mentality which are conveyed in a convincing and authentic way.
