This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alex Cowie As the twentieth century draws to a close, one of our greatest problems is the availability of energy. One way to study the energy problem is to resolve it into four areas: energy demand, energy sources, transportation of energy from sources to demand centers, and the optimal allocation of energy forms to demands. Each of these areas is extremely complex by itself. When efforts are made to tie them together, for example, to produce a National Policy, the complexities are compounded. Another way to study the energy problem, because of its political and social consequences, is to resolve it into geographical areas. Individual provinces of Canada or states of the United States will have their concerns about energy within their geographical boundaries. As producer, consumer, or both, each wants to ensure an energy development program which will work to the maximum benefit of its citizens. Similarly, countries endeavor to protect their citizens and undertake energy policies that will assure either a continuation of the existing quality of life or - particularly in the case of "Third World" countries - a marked improvement in quality of life. These competing and conflicting goals call for a study which encompasses the whole world. Again, complexity is piled upon complexity. If the prob lem is not yet sufficiently complex, there is an equally complex question of the effect of energy production and use on the ecology.
Book Synopsis Analyzing Demand Behavior by : Douglas R. Bohi
Download or read book Analyzing Demand Behavior written by Douglas R. Bohi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2011. This title takes econometric studies as data; it examines their assumptions, investigates their methodologies, contrasts the data sets they use, and compares their results. By informing users what they can and cannot expect from researchers, it can sharpen the criteria that are used to commission such studies and judge their results. By examining an array of studies dealing with the same or related phenomena, Bohi can analyse the ways in which decisions made by researchers affect their results. All while considering inferences surrounding the role of econometric demand estimation in formulating policy and understanding demand behavior.

Download or read book Interfuel Substitution written by Apostolos Serletis and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfuel substitution is an issue that is -- and will likely remain -- an important topic of inquiry for many years, as governments around the world seek to set policies that are intended to restrain carbon emissions or steer economies toward or away from certain fuels. This book contributes to this issue by estimating short- and long-term interfuel substitution elasticities, at the aggregate and sector levels, through the use of the latest advances in microeconometrics as well as recent international data for a number of OECD and non-OECD countries.
Book Synopsis Coal In Appalachia by : Curtis E. Harvey
Download or read book Coal In Appalachia written by Curtis E. Harvey and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal, the nation's most abundant fossil fuel and the only one that is exported, represents one of our most valuable natural resources. This study undertakes a thorough review of the economics of the Appalachian coal industry. It establishes, first of all, the international framework within which the American and the Appalachian coal industry function. It next examines the underlying principles that govern the production of and the demand for coal. This demand is influenced not only by price but also by world politics, the economic well-being of dozens of countries, government regulation, and the availability of fuel substitutes. Included are a comprehensive treatment of the regulation of the industry, the effects of coal utilization on air quality, land reclamation, safety, transport, and legislation pertaining to port use. In conclusion, Harvey looks at the prospects for Appalachian coal, considering the impact of technologies such as fluidized bed combustion and coal-water slurry and the issue of energy policy and fuel alternatives. The picture that emerges is not unexpected -- an industry whose recovery and enduring health depend on resurgence of world and domestic economic activity, social and political stability, and government regulation.
