Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study and application of composite materials are a truly interdisciplinary endeavour that has been enriched by contributions from chemistry, physics, materials science, mechanics and manufacturing engineering. The understanding of the interface (or interphase) in composites is the central point of this interdisciplinary effort. From the early development of composite materials of various nature, the optimization of the interface has been of major importance. While there are many reference books available on composite materials, few of them deal specifically with the science and mechanics of the interface of fiber reinforced composites. Further, many recent advances devoted solely to research in composite interfaces have been scattered in a variety of published literature and have yet to be assembled in a readily accessible form. To this end this book is an attempt to bring together recent developments in the field, both from the materials science and mechanics perspective, in a single convenient volume. The central theme of the book is tailoring the interface properties to optimise the mechanical peformance and structural integrity of composites with enhanced strength/stiffness and fracture toughness (or specific fracture resistance). It deals mainly with interfaces in advanced composites made from high performance fibers, such as glass, carbon, aramid, ultra high modulus polyethylene and some inorganic (e.g. B/W, A12O3, SiC) fibers, and matrix materials encompassing polymers, metals/alloys and ceramics. The book is intended to provide a comprehensive treatment of composite interfaces in such a way that it should be of interest to materials scientists, technologists and practising engineers, as well as graduate students and their supervisors in advanced composites. We hope that this book will also serve as a valuable source of reference to all those involved in the design and research of composite interfaces. The book contains eight chapters of discussions on microstructure-property relationships with underlying fundamental mechanics principles. In Chapter 1, an introduction is given to the nature and definition of interfaces in fiber reinforced composites. Chapter 2 is devoted to the mechanisms of adhesion which are specific to each fiber-matrix system, and the physio-chemical characterization of the interface with regard to the origin of adhesion. The experimental techniques that have been developed to assess the fiber-matrix interface bond quality on a microscopic scale are presented in Chapter 3, along with the techniques of measuring interlaminar/intralaminar strengths and fracture toughness using bulk composite laminates. The applicability and limitations associated with loading geometry and interpretation of test data are compared. Chapter 4 presents comprehensive theoretical analyses based on shear-lag models of the single fiber composite tests, with particular interest being placed on the interface debond process and the nature of the fiber-matrix interfacial bonding. Chapter 5 is devoted to reviewing current techniques of fiber surface treatments which have been devised to improve the bond strength and the fiber-matrix compatibility/stability during the manufacturing processes of composites. The micro-failure mechanisms and their associated theories of fracture toughness of composites are discussed in Chapter 6. The roles of the interface and its effects on the mechanical performance of fiber composites are addressed from several viewpoints. Recent research efforts to augment the transverse and interlaminar fracture toughness by means of controlled interfaces are presented in Chapters 7 and 8.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical properties of the interfaces in an Al2O3 fiber reinforced beta-2lS titanium have been evaluated by using fiber pushout tests. The Al2O3 fibers were coated with a refractory metal and Y2O3 which served as a diffusion barrier during the HIPing used to produce the metal matrix composites. By doing fiber pushout tests the interfacial fracture was found to occur at the interface between the refractory metal and the H2O3. The interfacial shear strength and interfacial frictional stress were measured to be 323 and 312 + or - 2 MPa, respectively. The interfacial frictional stress, which is due to asperity interlocking during the fiber sliding, was correlated to the surface roughness of the coated Al2O3 fiber obtained with the aid of an atomic force microscope. The measured surface roughness of 18.8 + or - 2.2 nm was related to the frictional stress through Hutchinson's model. The frictional coefficient between the Al2O3 fiber and the Ti matrix calculated to be 0.32 + or - 0.02.

Book excerpt: The main goal of this research was to optimize the interface properties in metal matrix composites by lattice matching the matrix and the dispersoids. Stable, coherent dispersoids can be achieved by mechanically alloying lattice-matched dispersoids into metal matrices and allowing some recrystallization or coarsening to occur, or by internal nitridization or carburization of homogeneous alloys. A model system that has a high probability of forming coherent interfaces is ZrN in Nb. For comparison purposed the relatively poorly matched systems TiN in Nb and TiN in Cu were also studies. The matrix/dispersoid orientation relationship in the Nb/ZrN system has been found to be (011)Nb, Zr (parallel) (001)ZrN. In the Nb/TiN system, the presence of an orientation relationship after extensive nitriding could not be detected. In the Cu/TiN system only external nitridation occurred when bulk Cu-Ti alloys were employed. However uniformly distributed nanosized TiN dispersoids were obtained when alloyed Cu-Ti powders were nitrided and subsequently mechanically alloyed.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to determine the interface properties needed for successful metal matrix composites and to learn how to achieve these properties. A number of factors have been selected for the study. These are thermodynamic stability of the interface, nature of the bonding across the interface, energy and structure of the interface, and role of adsorption at the interface. A number of systems have been chosen to probe these factors; namely, Al/TiC, Al/alpha-Al2O3, A1/MgAl2O4(spinel), Al/Al3(Tix, Zr1-x), Mg/SiC, Mg/MgO, and Mg/Al2O3. Techniques for preparing all of these composites have been worked out, including mechanical alloying followed by extrusion, arc melting, and liquid metal infiltration. MMCs also were obtained from Martin Marietta and Dow. Microstructures of the resulting MMCs are presented and discussed along with preliminary studies of some of the interfaces using transmission electron microscopy. In comparison to Al/SiC, Al/TiC and Mg/SiC show no evidence of chemical reaction at the interface during processing. Al/MgAl2O4(spinel) has superior mechanical properties to Al/alpha-AlO3, both prepared identically. (Author) (tr).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many properties of metal matrix composites are strongly influenced by the nature of the reinforcement-matrix interface. This in turn depends upon factors such as pretreatment of the fibers and composite fabrication techniques. The nature of the reinforcement-matrix interface is most commonly studied by electron spectroscopic techniques, which can give information about the degree of bonding between the reinforcement and matrix, and the formation of additional phases in the matrix material or at the interface. The use of these techniques to investigate the inter-relationship between fabrication techniques, interface properties and mechanical properties is described, and a number of specific examples are given.
