Book excerpt: Environmental pressures are driving detergent formulations to become ever-more so- phisticated blends of stabilisers; probing the interactions occurring in complex systems of hydrosoluble polymers with surfactants and their adsorption onto particles is key for the understanding of the mechanism of colloidal stability. In this thesis, the polymer-polymer and polymer-surfactant interactions have been investigated both in bulk and at the solid/liquid interface. The main techniques used were solvent relaxation NMR, photon correlation spectroscopy, small angle neutron scattering, diffusion NMR and optical reflectometry. The majority of experiments involved polyvinyl pyrrolidone, PVP, adsorbed on silica. Addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, decreased the adsorbed amount but increased the layer thickness, leaving the remaining adsorbed polymer in an extended conformation caused by repulsive interactions amongst adsorbed surfactant aggregates and the silica interface. The introduction of a nonionic alcohol ethoxylate surfactant to this system prevented the desorption of the polymer layer as it formed mixed micelles with SDS reducing the total charges per micelle and lowering repulsions between the surface and the surfactant micelles. The effect of a non-adsorbing polymer, sodium polystyrene sulfonate, aPSS, on the stability of silica particles was also investigated, showing that addition of the polyelec- trolyte to the silica dispersion modifies the interparticles interactions. Small roughly spherical clusters were formed, followed by larger, less spherical aggregates resulting in the formation of a dense gel network. Exploring the PVP /N aPSS system showed that these polymers interact in bulk forming NaPSS-rich complexes; interfacial investigations revealed that adding aPSS to PVP previously adsorbed on silica led to surface complexes formation. Finally exposing PVP to sodium polyacrylate revealed some polymer interactions at high pH. These interactions were favoured by increasing molecular weights; adding this polymer to PVP adsorbed onto silica lead to a small decrease in adsorbed amount and some particle aggregation.

The first chapter is a general introduction to the double layer and non-double layer interactions. In chapter 2 and 3, the double layer and hydration interactions have been coupled into a single set of equations because both are dependent on the polarization of the water molecules. The coupled equations involve the electric fields generated by the surface charge and surface dipoles, as well as the field due to the neighboring dipoles in water. The obtained equations were employed to explain the restabilization observed experimentally at large ionic strengths for colloidal particles on which protein molecules were adsorbed. In chapter 4, a general expression for the force generated between the two charged plates immersed in an electrolyte solution containing relatively small charged particles was derived based on Langmuir's approach. For charged plates immersed in a solution of an electrolyte and charged small particles, the effects of particle charge, particle charge sign, particle size and volume fraction of the particles on the force acting between the two plates were examined. In chapter 5, a cell model was proposed to examine the behavior of a dispersion of large particles immersed in an electrolyte solution containing small particles. chapter 6, two-dimensional Poisson-Boltzmann equation was solved to calculate the double layer interactions between two plates grafted polyelectrolyte. In chapter 7, a lower dielectric constant in the polymer adsorption layer is suggested The hairy adsorption layer can have a long range effect on the repulsive double layer interactions. In chapter 8, the bridging force induced by polyelectrolyte was investigated by using a self-consistent-field approach which takes into account the van der Waals interactions between the segments of the polyelectrolyte molecules and the plates, as well as the electrostatic and volume exclusion interactions. A positive contribution to the force between two plates is generated by the van der Waals interactions between the segments and the plates.

Fumed silica is of particular interest due to the large surface area that its branched structure provides for establishing interactions with specific matrices or chemical reactive groups. If these small particles are dispersed in an adequate medium, they can form suspensions, flocculated systems or three-dimensional networks; thus an understanding of how to control this microstructure is of paramount importance. Extensive research involving fumed silica dispersions has been conducted in areas such as inks, cosmetics, and paints. More recently, alternative novel applications such as fiber optic cables and composite polymer electrolytes, our major research effort in the past years, have gained especial importance. In this work, various types of fumed silica particles have been dispersed in different oligoethers and poly(ethylene oxide) PEO and their properties evaluated with the aim to finely tune them for improved performance during end use. Rheology, a reliable, easy, and readily available technique has been employed not only to characterize the systems, but also to study their microstructure and establish correlations that can be subsequently employed to tailor the material for the particular application. In particular, we examined dispersions of hydrophobic and hydrophilic fumed silica in oligoethers of different molecular weights and end group composition at different temperatures by using dynamic rheology. We observed that hydrophilic fumed silica particles form gels in the less polar oligoethers, whereas the hydrophobic ones form a network in all the oligoethers employed. Increasing the temperature increases irreversibly the gel modulus of the system containing hydrophilic fumed silica and the oligoether with the largest end group conte.

In physics, in chemistry, and in biology colloids play an important role and the study of colloidal systems underwent a recent renaissance. This is based on the development of experimental techniques, the availability of extensive computer simulations and well-developed theoretical approaches. From a technological point of view, the relevance of micro- and nanostructured materials and the presence of colloids in nature and everyday life motivates study of this rich field. In this thesis the phase behavior and the effective interactions of colloidal suspensions in bulk, in contact with surfaces, and in confined geometry are studied. For mixtures of particles with hard-core interactions the model introduced by Asakura, Oosawa and Vrij provides an appropriate starting-point. Based on that model the free-volume theory and the density functional theory are employed. In experimental systems one faces particles with properties such as the size or the shape which are described by a distribution. To capture that issue a generalized approach based on free-volume theory for treating mixtures of colloids and a polydisperse depletion agent is presented. Within that approach it is possible to treat size and morphology polydispersity. A depletion agent with a bimodal distribution possessing two length scales can be studied. Though the Asakura-Oosawa-Vrij model describes a simple fluid - a mixture of hard spheres and ideal polymer - the phenomenology is rather rich: in contact with a wall one finds layering and wetting effects and in confined geometry of a narrow pore one finds capillary condensation. The competition between both effects manifests itself in thermodynamic properties like the excess colloid adsorption and the solvation force between the two confining walls. Solvent phase separation complicates the evaluation of interparticle interactions between the solute particles. We address this question for the wall-colloid and the colloid-colloid geometry. For a non-spherical particle the effect of curvature on thermodynamic quantities is studied.
