Book excerpt: En institution un constat clinique est fréquent : les enfants handicapés moteurs, équipés d'aides à la communication n'interagissent pas, ou peu, entre eux. De nombreux auteurs ont démontré l'importance des relations entre pairs dans le développement global de l'enfant, au niveau psychologique, social ou langagier. En effet, ces relations lui permettraient, entre autres, de renforcer les compétences acquises lors des échanges mère-enfant en les appliquant à de nouveaux partenaires sociaux. Dans le cas de l'enfant né avec ou développant un handicap moteur, le développement de la communication peut être perturbé pour différentes raisons comme des difficultés dans la relation entourgae-enfant ou encore un accès difficile voire impossible à la parole. Théoriquement, la mise en place d'aides à la communication permet de faciliter les échanges et d'accroître les opportunités de communications, notamment entre pairs. S'inscrivant à la fois dans une approche éthologique et expérimentale, ce mémoire a pour objectif d'évaluer le recours à la synthèse vocale entre enfants "non parlants". L'étude porte sur trois enfants de l'IEM Charlemagne, âgés de neuf à treize ans, porteurs d'un handicap moteur plus ou moins lourd, entravant la réalisation de la parole. Ils sont réunis depuis deux ans dans un groupe "communication multimodale" et sont tous, dans le cadre de ce groupe, équipés de synthèses vocales. Nous avons, tout d'abord, évalué leur communication en général avant d'observer leurs échanges au sein du groupe. Ont donc été mis en place, dans ce cadre, un questionnaire destiné à l'entourage des enfants, une grille évaluant de manière quantitative le recours à différents moyens de communication dans les échanges entre pairs. Par ailleurs, nous avons proposé, sur dix séances, un entraînement systématique visant à favoriser les interactions. Nous espérons montrer la pertinence d'un tel procédé dans la prise en charge de l'enfant handicapé moteur nonparlant.
