Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface This book is the culmination of a workshop jointly organized by NATO and CEC on Climate-Ocean Interaction which was held at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University during 26-30 September 1988. The objective of the ARW was to assess the current status of research on climate-ocean interaction, with a major focus on the development of coupled atmosphere-ocean-ice models and their application in the study of past, present and possible future climates. This book contains 16 chapters divided into four parts: Introduction; Observations of the Climate of the Ocean; Modelling the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Sea Ice Components of the Climatic System; and Simulating the Variability of Climate on Short, Medium and Long Time Scales. A fifth part contains the reports of the five Working Groups on: Climate Observations, Modelling, ENSO Modelling and Prediction, Climate-Ocean Interaction on TIme Scales of Decades to Centuries, and Impact of Paleoclimatic Proxy Data on Climate Modelling. Preface ix Acknowledgements I thank Howard Cattle and Neil Wells for their guidance and assistance as members of the Workshop Organizing Committee. I particularly thank Michael Davey for all his efforts as Local Organizer to make the ARW a success. I also thank the staff of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University, for their help with the arrangements for the ARW.

Book excerpt: This book aims to acquaint readers with the recent advances in experimental and theoretical investigations of ocean-atmosphere interactions, a rapidly developing field in earth sciences. Particular attention is paid to the scope and perspectives for satellite measurements and mathematical modeling. Current approaches to the construction of coupled ocean-atmosphere models (from the simplest one-dimensional to comprehensive three-dimensional ones) for the solution of key problems in climate theory are discussed in detail. Field measurements and the results of numerical climate simulations are presented and help to explain climate variability that arises from various natural and anthropogenic factors.

Book excerpt: LA THESE PORTE SUR LE ROLE DES ANOMALIES DE TEMPERATURE DE SURFACE DE L'OCEAN DANS LE SYSTEME CLIMATIQUE DES MOYENNES LATITUDES. DANS UNE PREMIERE PARTIE, NOUS ETUDIONS LEUR COMPORTEMENT A L'ECHELLE DE QUELQUES MOIS DANS LES OBSERVATIONS, DANS L'ATLANTIQUE NORD. SI, EN ACCORD AVEC D'AUTRES ETUDES, NOUS MONTRONS QU'ELLES SONT EN PARTIE GENEREES PAR LES ECHANGES DE CHALEUR AVEC L'ATMOSPHERE, NOUS MONTRONS QU'ELLES SONT AUSSI ULTERIEUREMENT ATTENUEES PAR CES DERNIERS, EN RAISON DE L'AJUSTEMENT DE LA TEMPERATURE DE L'AIR DANS LA COUCHE LIMITE ATMOSPHERIQUE. CET EFFET EN RETOUR, QUI EXPLIQUE TYPIQUEMENT LA MOITIE DE LA PERSISTENCE DES ANOMALIES DE TEMPERATURE DE SURFACE DE L'OCEAN, EST MIS EN EVIDENCE POUR DES ANOMALIES DE PETITE ECHELLE SPATIALE, MAIS AUSSI POUR LEURS STRUCTURES DOMINANTES DE VARIABILITE. LE FAIBLE AJUSTEMENT DE LA CIRCULATION TROPOSPHERIQUE EST EGALEMENT ETUDIE DANS LES OBSERVATIONS DE PRESSION DE SURFACE, DE TEMPERATURE DE L'AIR A 700 MLB ET DE HAUTEUR GEOPOTENTIELLE A 500 MLB DANS L'ATLANTIQUE NORD. DANS LA SECONDE PARTIE DE LA THESE, NOUS ETUDIONS L'EFFET DES ANOMALIES DE TEMPERATURE DE SURFACE DE L'OCEAN ET PLUS GENERALEMENT DE CELLES DES VARIABLES DE LA COUCHE MELANGEE (DENSITE ET PROFONDEUR) SUR LA VARIABILITE DECENNALE DE LA THERMOCLINE VENTILEE. NOUS UTILISONS POUR CELA UN MODELE A DEUX COUCHES DE LA THERMOCLINE AUQUEL EST SUPERPOSE UNE COUCHE DE MELANGE. ON PRESCRIT LA DENSITE DE CETTE DERNIERE ET LE FLUX DE POUSSEE EN SURFACE EST DEDUIT DE FACON DIAGNOSTIQUE DU BILAN DE DENSITE DES COLONNES VENTILEES. NOUS AVONS CONSIDERE UNE MODULATION DECENNALE DU CYCLE SAISONNIER, ET NOUS AVONS MONTRE QUE LA VARIABILITE ENGENDREE DANS LA THERMOCLINE EST SIGNIFICATIVE MAIS FAIBLE. UNE EXTENSION DU MODELE AU CAS D'UN FORCAGE STOCHASTIQUE A PERMIS DE PREDIRE LE SPECTRE DE VORTICITE POTENTIELLE DANS LA REGION VENTILEE. LA COMPARAISON DE NOTRE ETUDE AVEC CELLES DU FORCAGE DE LA THERMOCLINE PAR LE VENT SUGGERE QUE CE DERNIER MECANISME EST LE PLUS EFFICACE DANS CETTE REGION.

Book excerpt: This book has been published by Allenvi (French National Alliance for Environmental Research) to coincide with the 22nd Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) in Marrakesh. It is the outcome of work by academic researchers on both sides of the Mediterranean and provides a remarkable scientific review of the mechanisms of climate change and its impacts on the environment, the economy, health and Mediterranean societies. It will also be valuable in developing responses that draw on “scientific evidence” to address the issues of adaptation, resource conservation, solutions and risk prevention. Reflecting the full complexity of the Mediterranean environment, the book is a major scientific contribution to the climate issue, where various scientific considerations converge to break down the boundaries between disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upwelling areas are among the most fertile regions of the ocean. In principle, upwelling is caused by the divergence of the flow in the surface layer of the ocean which arises as a consequence of a particular wind field, the presence of a coastline, or other special conditions. Since deeper oceanic layers are usually enriched wi th nutrients, it is the permanent supply of nutrients which forms the basis for the high producti vi ty of upwelling reg ions. The study of upwelling and its consequences were, for a long time, the task of individual scientists from all disciplines of marine science. Today, it is perhaps the branch of oceanography where interdisciplinary coopera tion has developed best. Becoming aware of the large potential yield of upwelling regions, governments in creased the funds for upwelling research. With research activities developed on a larger scale, interdisciplin ary cooperation became a necessity. On the international level, several symposia documented the rapid development. Three volumes reflect the results of these scientific meetings (Rapp. Proc.-Verb. 159, 1970; Inv. Pesq. 35, 1, 1971; Tethys §.' 1-2, 1974). The present book contains selected papers from the Third Symposium on Upwelling Ecosystems, which was held in Kiel in September 1975. Although the third of a series of meetings, it was the first where the word "ecosystem" stood in the title for a scientific program.

Book excerpt: Measuring Ocean Currents: Tools, Technologies, and Data covers all major aspects of ocean current measurements in view of the implications of ocean currents on changing climate, increasing pollution levels, and offshore engineering activities. Although more than 70% of the Earth is covered by ocean, there is limited information on the countless fine- to large-scale water motions taking place within them. This book fills that information gap as the first work that summarizes the state-of-the-art methods and instruments used for surface, subsurface, and abyssal ocean current measurements. Readers of this book will find a wealth of information on Lagrangian measurements, horizontal mapping, imaging, Eulerian measurements, and vertical profiling techniques. In addition, the book describes modern technologies for remote measurement of ocean currents and their signatures, including HF Doppler radar systems, satellite-borne sensors, ocean acoustic tomography, and more. Crucial aspects of ocean currents are described in detail as well, including dispersion of effluents discharged into the sea and transport of beneficial materials—as well as environmentally hazardous materials—from one region to another. The book highlights several important practical applications, showing how measurements relate to climate change and pollution levels, how they affect coastal and offshore engineering activities, and how they can aid in tsunami detection. Coverage of measurement, mapping and profiling techniques Descriptions of technologies for remote measurement of ocean currents and their signatures Reviews crucial aspects of ocean currents, including special emphasis on the planet-spanning thermohaline circulation, known as the ocean's "conveyor belt," and its crucial role in climate change
