Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mono and bilayer graphene are novel carbon materials with many remarkable properties. Their electronic properties, including the basic band structure, can be tuned by electrostatic gating. Calculation of the effect of the gate requires solving self-consistent screening problem. An overview of the electronic properties of graphene system is given in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 illustrates the physics of Dirac fermion on the example of a graphene p-n junction. The results are shown to be essential for experimental verification of Klein tunneling in graphene. Chapter 3 discusses the effect of gating on bilayer graphene and how their signatures have been observed by the IR spectroscopy. Chapter 4 discusses the theory of semiclassical Landau quantization in bilayer subject to both electric and magnetic fields. This explains the role of the Berry phase, valley polarization.

Book Synopsis Thermal Transport in Low Dimensions by : Stefano Lepri
Download or read book Thermal Transport in Low Dimensions written by Stefano Lepri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-07 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding non-equilibrium properties of classical and quantum many-particle systems is one of the goals of contemporary statistical mechanics. Besides its own interest for the theoretical foundations of irreversible thermodynamics(e.g. of the Fourier's law of heat conduction), this topic is also relevant to develop innovative ideas for nanoscale thermal management with possible future applications to nanotechnologies and effective energetic resources. The first part of the volume (Chapters 1-6) describes the basic models, the phenomenology and the various theoretical approaches to understand heat transport in low-dimensional lattices (1D e 2D). The methods described will include equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, hydrodynamic and kinetic approaches and the solution of stochastic models. The second part (Chapters 7-10) deals with applications to nano and microscale heat transfer, as for instance phononic transport in carbon-based nanomaterials, including the prominent case of nanotubes and graphene. Possible future developments on heat flow control and thermoelectric energy conversion will be outlined. This volume aims at being the first step for graduate students and researchers entering the field as well as a reference for the community of scientists that, from different backgrounds (theoretical physics, mathematics, material sciences and engineering), has grown in the recent years around those themes.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Low-Dimensional Carbon Nanomaterials: Volume 1284 by : John J. Boeckl
Download or read book Fundamentals of Low-Dimensional Carbon Nanomaterials: Volume 1284 written by John J. Boeckl and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symposium C, "Fundamentals of Low-Dimensional Carbon Nanomaterials," was held Nov. 29-Dec. 3 at the 2010 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. This resultant proceedings volume includes topics such as growth techniques for CNTs and graphene, structural characterization, novel properties, and interface & surface structures. Low-dimensional carbon nanostructures exhibit a rich structural diversity from zero-dimensional C60, one-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and two-dimensional graphene and graphite oxides. These low-dimensional carbon nanostructures are at the forefront of materials science and provide a platform for understanding the growth mechanisms and properties of nanostructures in general. They exhibit novel properties with endless potential applications from high-speed electronics to high-performance composites. Although low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials have attracted great interest in the research community, the applications and commercialization of graphene and CNTs have, to date, not been as successful as anticipated. The need for significant improvements in material quality and structural uniformity exists.
Book Synopsis Low-Dimensional Systems by : Tobias Brandes
Download or read book Low-Dimensional Systems written by Tobias Brandes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental progress over the past few years has made it possible to test a n- ber of fundamental physical concepts related to the motion of electrons in low dimensions. The production and experimental control of novel structures with typical sizes in the sub-micrometer regime has now become possible. In parti- lar, semiconductors are widely used in order to con?ne the motion of electrons in two-dimensional heterostructures. The quantum Hall e?ect was one of the ?rst highlights of the new physics that is revealed by this con?nement. In a further step of the technological development in semiconductor-heterostructures, other arti?cial devices such as quasi one-dimensional ‘quantum wires’ and ‘quantum dots’ (arti?cial atoms) have also been produced. These structures again di?er very markedly from three- and two-dimensional systems, especially in relation to the transport of electrons and the interaction with light. Although the technol- ical advances and the experimental skills connected with these new structures are progressing extremely fast, our theoretical understanding of the physical e?ects (such as the quantum Hall e?ect) is still at a very rudimentary level. In low-dimensional structures, the interaction of electrons with one another and with other degrees of freedoms such as lattice vibrations or light gives rise to new phenomena that are very di?erent from those familiar in the bulk ma- rial. The theoretical formulation of the electronic transport properties of small devices may be considered well-established, provided interaction processes are neglected.

Book Synopsis Electron-phonon Interactions in Low-dimensional Structures by : Lawrence John Challis
Download or read book Electron-phonon Interactions in Low-dimensional Structures written by Lawrence John Challis and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of electrons and holes confined to two, one and even zero dimensions has uncovered a rich variety of new physics and applications. This book describes the interaction between these confined carriers and the optic and acoustic phonons within and around the confined regions. Phonons provide the principal channel of energy transfer between the carriers and their surroundings and also the main restriction to their room temperature mobility. But they have many other roles; they provide, for example, an essential feature of the operation of the quantum cascade laser. Since their momenta at relevant energies are well matched to those of electrons, they can also be used to probe electronic properties such as the confinement width of 2D electron gases and the dispersion curve of quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect. The book describes both the physics of the electron-phonon interaction in the different confined systems and the experimental and theoretical techniques that have been used in its investigation. The experimental methods include optical and transport techniques as well as techniques in which phonons are used as the experimental probe. The aim of the book is to provide an up to date review of the physics and its significance in device performance. It is also written to be explanatory and accessible to graduate students and others new to the field.
