Book Synopsis Chile and the Inter-American Human Rights System by : Karinna Fernández Neira
Download or read book Chile and the Inter-American Human Rights System written by Karinna Fernández Neira and published by University of London Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This edited volume brings together both established and emerging human rights scholars and practitioners to discuss the central challenges in the areas of LGBT rights, torture and indigenous rights in the Americas. The theoretical and empirical contributions in this edited book are based on the most recent cases decided by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights against the Chilean state, namely; (a) Case of Atala Riffo and daughters v. Chile, (b) Case of Garcia Lucero et al. v. Chile, and (c) Case of Norín Catriman et al. (Leaders, members and activist of the Mapuche Indigenous People) v. Chile. Using different methodological approaches such as case studies, legal analysis and cross-national approaches, the authors go beyond the description of these three cases and reflect on the importance of the IAHRS, its increasing developments and the improvement that it has had in the region"--Publisher's website.

The creative economy, which we call the "Orange Economy" in this book (you'll see why), encompasses the immense wealth of talent, intellectual property, interconnectedness, and, of course, cultural heritage of the Latin American and Caribbean region (and indeed, every region). At the end of this manual, you will have the knowledge base necessary to understand and explain what the Orange Economy is and why it is so important. You will also acquire the analytical tools needed to take better advantage of opportunities across the arts, heritage, media, and creative services.

Book Synopsis Allende’s Chile and the Inter-American Cold War by : Tanya Harmer

This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fidel Castro described Salvador Allende's democratic election as president of Chile in 1970 as the most important revolutionary triumph in Latin America after the Cuban revolution. Yet celebrations were short lived. In Washington, the Nixon administration vowed to destroy Allende's left-wing government while Chilean opposition forces mobilized against him. The result was a battle for Chile that ended in 1973 with a right-wing military coup and a brutal dictatorship lasting nearly twenty years. Tanya Harmer argues that this battle was part of a dynamic inter-American Cold War struggle to determine Latin America's future, shaped more by the contest between Cuba, Chile, the United States, and Brazil than by a conflict between Moscow and Washington. Drawing on firsthand interviews and recently declassified documents from archives in North America, Europe, and South America--including Chile's Foreign Ministry Archive--Harmer provides the most comprehensive account to date of Cuban involvement in Latin America in the early 1970s, Chilean foreign relations during Allende's presidency, Brazil's support for counterrevolution in the Southern Cone, and the Nixon administration's Latin American policies. The Cold War in the Americas, Harmer reveals, is best understood as a multidimensional struggle, involving peoples and ideas from across the hemisphere.

Book Synopsis Upgrading to Compete Global Value Chains, Clusters, and SMEs in Latin America by : Carlo Pietrobelli
Download or read book Upgrading to Compete Global Value Chains, Clusters, and SMEs in Latin America written by Carlo Pietrobelli and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does enterprise participation in global markets ensure sustainable income growth? Policies have often been designed in the belief that this is true, but competitiveness and participation in international markets may take very different forms, and developing countries do not always benefit. This book presents a series of rich and original field studies from Latin America, conducted by the authors with the same consistent methodological approach, and represents a theory-generating exercise within clusters and economic development literature. The main question addressed is how Latin American small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may participate in global markets in ways that provide for sustainable income growth, the “high road” to competitiveness. In contrast, the “low road” is often typically followed by small firms from developing countries, which often compete by squeezing wages and revenues rather than by increasing productivity, salaries, and profits.
