Book excerpt: Intense positron beams are under development or being considered at several laboratories. Already today a few accelerator based high intensity, low brightness e beams exist producing of the order of 108 - 109 e/sec. Several laboratories are aiming at high intensity, high brightness e+ beams with intensities greater than 109 e+/sec and current densities of the order of 1013 - 1014 e+ sec− 1cm−2. Intense e+ beams can be realized in two ways (or in a combination thereof) either through a development of more efficient B+ moderators or by increasing the available activity of B+ particles. In this review we shall mainly concentrate on the latter approach. In atomic physics the main trust for these developments is to be able to measure differential and high energy cross-sections in e+ collisions with atoms and molecules. Within solid state physics high intensity, high brightness e+ beams are in demand in areas such as the re-emission e+ microscope, two dimensional angular correlation of annihilation radiation, low energy e+ diffraction and other fields. Intense e+ beams are also important for the development of positronium beams, as well as exotic experiments such as Bose condensation and Ps liquid studies.

Book excerpt: Beams of monoenergetic positrons with energies of a few eV to many keV have been used in experiments in atomic physics, solid state physics and materials science. The production of positron beams from a new source, an electron linac, is described. Intense, pulsed beams of low-energy positrons have been produced by a high-energy beam from an electron linac. The production efficiency, moderator geometry, beam spot size and other positron beam parameters have been determined for electrons with energies from 60 to 120 MeV. Low-energy positron beams produced with a high-energy electron linac can be of much higher intensity than those beams currently derived from radioactive sources. These higher intensity beams will make possible positron experiments previously infeasible.

E approx. = 75 MeV) beam of positrons has been built at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. This flux is more than 10 times greater than any existing beam from radioactive sources. Plans are underway to increase further the flux by more than an order of magnitude. The intense low energy positron beam is made by utilizing the High Flux Beam Reactor at Brookhaven to produce the isotope 64Cu with an activity of 40 curies of positrons. Source moderation techniques are utilized to produce the low energy positron beam from the high energy positrons emitted from 64Cu. 31 refs., 7 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a coherent and comprehensive overview of the generation and application of mono-energetic positron beams. It has been written by acknowledged experts, at a level accessible to graduate students working, or planning to work, with positron beams, and to scientists in other areas who want to know something about the field. The book begins with a brief historical introduction and an overview of how positron beams are generated and transported. A description of the fate of slow positrons in gaseous and condensed matter, with reference to many of the fundamental measurements made possible by the advent of positron beams, is followed by a discussion on applications in the study of solid surfaces, defect profiling in subsurface regions, interfaces and thin films, and the probing of bulk properties in novel ways. The book ends with a look at the future, considering the prospects for intense positron beams and their potential for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first conference in this series, devoted principally to the interaction of positrons in gases, was held at York University, Toronto, in July 1981 immediately preceding the XII ICPEAC in Gatlinburg, and the proceedings were published in the Canadian Journal of Physics, volume 60 (1982). So successful was this meeting that the decision was taken to hold a second one around the time of XIII ICPEAC in Berlin in 1983. London was clearly a convenient location but, rather than the obvious choice of University College London in central London, the Organising Committee decided that the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of Royal Holloway College would provide a more pleasant and intimate atmosphere for a small meeting. Even a small conference requires substantial sums of money to pay the expenses of invited speakers and when considering possible sources of funds the Organising Committee recognised that the intended format of the meeting and the international composition of the participants made it appropriate to apply to the NATO Science Committee for support under the Advanced Research Workshop Programme. This was one of the few successful applications made this year, and so it was that the conference became the 'NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Positron Scattering in Gases'. The Workshop, with approximately sixty participants, started after lunch on 19 July, 1983 and finished at mid-day on 23 July.

Book excerpt: Previous experiments with positrons from radionuclides have demonstrated that positron beams are a rich source of information about the surface condition of solids. We have now demonstrated the possibility of producing very intense beams at the Lawrence Livermore 100 MeV electron linac and installed an apparatus that produces a variable energy positron beam at energies between 500 eV and 20 keV with sufficient intensity to perform a variety of new positron experiments. The positron beam is pulsed with 10 ns to 3 microseconds duration at rates up to 1440 pulses per second, with as many as 106 positrons available per pulse. Experiments that require either pulsed or steady currents are possible in an ultrahigh vacuum environment. For the first time two-dimensional angular correlation spectra of the surface positron and positronium annihilation at a single crystal sample have been obtained for copper. 6 references, 4 figures, 1 table.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we survey some of the ideas that have been proposed regarding the production of intense beams of low energy positrons. Various facilities to produce beams of this type are already under design or construction and other methods beyond those in use have been previously discussed. Moreover, a variety of potential experiments utilizing intense positron beams have been suggested. It is to be hoped that this paper can serve as a useful summary of some of the current ideas, as well as a stimulation for new ideas to be forthcoming at the workshop. 31 references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present an overview of nonneutral plasma techniques developed to study the interaction of low-energy positrons with atoms and molecules. Both scattering and positron annihilation experiments are described. The scattering experiments provide the first state-resolved cross sections for both vibrational excitation of molecules and electronic excitation of atoms and molecules by positron impact. The annihilation experiments provide the first energy-resolved measurements of positron annihilation. Extensions of these techniques are briefly discussed, including work to create a new generation of positron beams with multi-electron volt energy resolution and the development of methods to study atomic clusters and dust grains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Atomic Physics with Positrons, which was held at University College London during 15-18 July 1987, was the fourth meeting in a series devoted to the general theme of positron colli sions in gases. Previous meetings have been held at York University, Toronto (1981); Royal Holloway College, Egham (1983) and Wayne State Uni versity, Detroit (1985). Recent very significant improvements in positron beam currents, due to the development of more efficient moderators and the use of more intense positron sources, are making possible an increasingly sophisticated range of experiments in atomic collision physics. Whereas a few years ago only total scattering cross sections could be determined, measurements can now be made of various partial and differential cross sections. Intense positron beams are also being used to produce positronium beams and already, as reported here, preliminary investigations have been made of collisions of positronium with several target systems. These experimental developments have stimulated, and been stimulated by, steady, if somewhat less spectacu1ar,progress in associated theoretical studies. Both aspects of the field are well represented in these Proceed ings.
