La obra completa analiza, entre otros muchos, los temas y problemas fundamentales de la disciplina filosófica conocida con los nombres de Teoría del conocimiento, Epistemología y Crítica, replanteando en una dimensión hasta ahora inédita cuestiones tales como las de la intelección, el juicio, el conocimiento, la razón, el saber, la comprensión, la verdad, la ciencia, etc. No hay duda de que el enfoque que Zubiri da a estas cuestiones es profundamente original. Desde los tiempos de Parménides la filosofía ha solido resolver el problema de las relaciones entre la inteligencia y la realidad en el punto que constituye el tema central de este volumen, el «logos», cuya expresión más clásica es el «juicio». Zubiri se opone frontalmente a esta tradición, que según él conduce a un logicismo formalista que desvirtúa el papel de la inteligencia e impide el acceso a la realidad. Afirmar que el logos es la estructura fundamental de la intelección supone logificar la inteligencia, es decir, hacer de ella una facultad puramente formal y conceptiva. El resultado de esto es el conceptismo y el idealismo, los males seculares de la filosofía. Frente a esto, Zubiri afirma la preeminencia de la intelección sobre el logos. La inteligencia, como quedó expuesto en el volumen anterior, meramente actualiza las cosas en tanto que «reales». El logos es un modo ulterior de la intelección que permite expresar lo que esas cosas reales son «en realidad». El desarrollo de esta idea central constituye el argumento del presente libro.

He first presented this material as a set of 1968 public lectures in Madrid. They were collected, edited, and published in 1989 as Estructura dinámica de la realidad. In 1962 Zubiri had published Sobre la esencia (On essence), a work of metaphysics that was praised by critics with one qualification: its treatment of reality was too static. The "hard problem" of today's consciousness studies is subjective experience: understanding why some brain processing is accompanied by an experienced inner life. Recent scientific advances offer insights for understanding the physiological and chemical phenomenology of consciousness. But by leaving aside the internal experiential nature of consciousness in favor of mapping neural activity, such science leaves many questions unanswered. While serving as president of the Jesuit-run University of Central America in the midst of El Salvador's brutal civil war, Ellacuría was also a prolific writer. His advocacy on behalf of the country's persecuted majority provoked the enmity of the Salvadoran political establishment. On November 16, 1989, members of the Salvadoran military entered the university's campus and murdered Ellacuría, along with five other Jesuit priests and two women. Kevin F. Burke, SJ, shows why Ellacuría is significant not only as a martyr but also as a theologian. Ellacuría effectively integrated philosophy, history, anthropology, and sociopolitical analysis into his theological reflections on salvation, spirituality, and the church to create an original contribution to liberation theology. Ellacuría's writings directly address one of the most vexing issues in theology today: can theologians account for the demands arising from both the particularity of their various social-historical situations and also the universal claims of Christian revelation? Burke explains how Ellacuría bases theology in a philosophy of historical reality—the "ground beneath the cross"—and interprets the suffering of "the crucified peoples" in the light of Jesus' crucifixion. Ellacuría thus inserts the theological realities of salvation and transcendence squarely within the course of human events, and he connects these to the Christian mandate to "take the crucified peoples down from their crosses."
