Book Synopsis Ecosystem Management in the Boreal Forest by : Sylvie Gauthier
Download or read book Ecosystem Management in the Boreal Forest written by Sylvie Gauthier and published by PUQ. This book was released on 2009 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Ecosystem Management. A management approach that aims to maintain healthy and resilient forest ecosystems by focusing on a reduction of differences between natural and managed landscapes to ensure long-term maintenance of ecosystem functions and thereby retain the social and economic benefits they provide to society. That is the definition of forest ecosystem management proposed in this book, which provides a summary of key ecological concepts supporting this approach. The book includes a review of major disturbance regimes that shape the natural dynamics of the boreal forest and gives examples from different Canadian boreal regions. Several projects implementing the forest ecosystem management approach are presented to illustrate the challenges created by current forestry practices and the solutions that this new approach can provide. In short, knowledge and understanding of forest dynamics can serve as a guide for forest management. Planning interventions based on natural dynamics can facilitate reconciliation between forest harvesting needs and the interests of other forest users.

Download or read book Mountain Resorts written by Julia LeMense and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountains are the home of significant ecological resources - wildlife habitat, higher elevation plant systems, steep slopes, delicate soils and water systems. These resources are subject to very visible and growing pressures, most of which are caused by the unique features of mountains. Using as case studies four mountain resorts in the US and Canada, this book analyzes the extent to which the law protects the ecological systems of mountains from the adverse impacts associated with the development, operation and expansion of resorts. In order to examine these issues, Mountain Resorts takes an interdisciplinary approach, with contributions from ecologists and lawyers who focus on ski-related activities, increasing four-season use of the mountains and expanding residential, commercial and recreational development at the mountains' base. Its analysis of an array of US and Canadian federal, state and local laws provides a multifaceted exploration of the intersection of ecology and the law at mountain resorts.

Book Synopsis Geoindicators for Monitoring Canada's National Parks by : David M. Welch
Download or read book Geoindicators for Monitoring Canada's National Parks written by David M. Welch and published by [Halifax, N.S.] : Parks Canada. This book was released on 2002 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parks Canada has adopted an ecological integrity monitoring framework to guide its biennial assessment of the parks system. This paper focusses on the search for indicators of geological, geomorphological, and soil features, processes, & stresses for that framework. The paper describes indicators developed by the International Union of Geological Sciences, the Canadian Environmental Monitoring & Assessment Network, and the author that have been combined into one list, and assesses each indicator for three criteria: management relevance, linkage with other indicators, and practicality for monitoring. A short list of selected indicators is proposed for further consideration for national park system monitoring. The author also selects indicators that seem best matched to the local environment in five national parks in order to show the variation in indicators among local situations.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to the African Convention on the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources by : World Conservation Union
Download or read book An Introduction to the African Convention on the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources written by World Conservation Union and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2009 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Convention on the conservation of nature and natural resources was adopted in 1968 in Algiers. Considered the most forward looking regional agreement of the time, it influenced significantly the development of environmental law in Africa. Two and a half decades of intense developments in international environmental law made it necessary to revise this treaty, update its provisions and enlarge its scope. This was undertaken under the auspices of the African Union (previously OAU), and the revision was adopted by its Heads of State and Government in July 2003 in Maputo. The introduction provides an overview of this new international treaty, as well as a commentary to each of its provisions.

Book Synopsis A Proposed Framework to Assess Cumulative Environmental Effects in Canadian National Parks by : Sarah A. Kalff
Download or read book A Proposed Framework to Assess Cumulative Environmental Effects in Canadian National Parks written by Sarah A. Kalff and published by Halifax, N.S. : Parks Canada, Atlantic Regional Office. This book was released on 1995 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report proposes a framework that promotes cumulative impact assessment (CEA) as a decision-making process where information on the ecological integrity of national parks is integrated into park management planning. Research for the development of the framework includes a literature review, interviews with park managers and cumulative effects specialists, and field work in two Atlantic region parks. Two illustrations using a project from each park helped refine the framework and ensure its utility. The framework links three components: sources of cumulative environmental change, assessment of this change, and the options available to manage cumulative effects. The framework establishes a link between local effects induced by specific projects or activities and overall park ecological integrity by highlighting the relationship between project-specific environmental assessment and park planning. CEA is the bridge between these two management activities. The report focuses mainly on the assessment portion of the framework and provides a series of steps to assist in conducting CEAs. The steps are organized into three tiers of analysis that correlate with regional, park, and project site scales. The framework also directs the assessor to examine broad temporal scales.
Book Synopsis Mercury Concentrations in Brook Trout and White Perch from Kejimkujik National Park, Nova Scotia by : André D'Entremont
Download or read book Mercury Concentrations in Brook Trout and White Perch from Kejimkujik National Park, Nova Scotia written by André D'Entremont and published by Halifax, N.S. : Parks Canada, Atlantic Region. This book was released on 1998 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines fillet mercury levels in brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and white perch (Morone americana) collected from water bodies in Kejimkujik National Park. Mercury levels found in these species, important components of the local recreational fishery, are compared to those observed in other North American studies and to Health Canada guidelines regarding safe consumption of fish. Correlations are identified between total mercury concentrations and fish age, length, and weight. Differences in mean mercury concentrations among sampling locations are also noted, and possible sources of the mercury contamination are discussed.
