Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. When almost half the world's population lives in large cities, the question is raised about the need for nature in cities and the relationship between man and nature. The presence of nature in a city demonstrates that city dwellers have a need for it and it is associated with positive values. In the chapter called The study of cohabitation "people - biodiversity" in a town I showed how biodiversity is integrated into urban life of the City of Paris and what the benefits, relevance and constraints of this integration are. It remains for us to ask about the dynamics of space and species. How are they changing? How do fauna and flora develop in Paris? To answer these questions we need to follow the evolution of biodiversity of Paris in long term and make permanent collections of information in the field in order to identify as closely as possible spatial and temporal dynamics of species. It also raises the question if Paris can be seen as an open city or not? Then, as regards ecological corridors in Paris (European Natura 2000 network, called the "green screen"), the question is whether they can perform the intended function, they have the potential to disseminate different species on the territory of Paris. The key question is whether these areas will become points of communication between city and the countryside, or they will become more "utopia” of nature.

Book excerpt: Multiculturalism and Integration provides new insights into the important issues of diversity, reasonable accommodation and identity construction in multicultural societies by examining the experiences of Canada and Ireland. While these two societies share many historical and cultural links, their differences help reveal the range of possible approaches to these important issues. Multicultural and multilingual diversity in contemporary Ireland are fairly recent phenomena, whereas Canada’s policies and practices addressing cultural and linguistic diversity are several decades old. This basic difference has influenced their laws, language policies, education systems, cultural creations, and national identities as they have worked to accommodate multiculturalism. The volume brings together an international group of scholars working in a variety of fields including politics, law, sociolinguistics, literature, philosophy, and history. Their interdisciplinary approach addresses the complex factors influencing integration and multiculturalism, painting detailed and accurate portraits of these issues in Canada and Ireland.
