Durch meinen Namen wird dem Leser schnell klar, dass ich keine Deutsche bin. Ich bin aber auch keine Aussiedlerin, sondern russische Staatsbürgerin. Genau wie die Aussiedler, versuche ich mich seit vier Jahren in die deutsche Gesellschaft zu integrieren. Jetzt stehe ich am Ende meines Studiums und hatte die Möglichkeit für meine Bachelorarbeit ein Thema zu wählen, das mich sehr interessiert. Obwohl viel über Russlanddeutsche, Spätaussiedler und Aussiedler diskutiert und auch in den Medien berichtet wird, wissen die wenigsten Einheimischen wer eigentlich hinter diesen Bezeichnungen steckt (siehe hierzu Anhang 02). Der Begriff Russlanddeutsche wird allgemein für die Nachfahren deutscher Kolonisten verwendet, die in den Nachfolgestaaten der UdSSR leben. Diese Bezeichnung wurde aus dem Russischen abgeleitet und hat keinen rechtlichen Status. Die Russlanddeutschen nennen sich in ihrem Herkunftsland russkie nemcy . Als Aussiedler wird eine Person (hier ein Russlanddeutscher ) bezeichnet, die als deutscher Staatsangehöriger oder Volkszugehöriger nach Abschluss der allgemeinen Vertreibungsmaßnahmen ihr Herkunftsgebiet verlassen und im Bundesgebiet ihren ständigen Aufenthaltsort hat. Der Begriff des Aussiedlers wurde ab dem 01.01.1993 durch den Begriff des Spätaussiedlers ersetzt. Um ein Verständnis dafür zu bekommen, aus welchen Gründen Russlanddeutsche nach Deutschland eingewandert sind bzw. einwandern und woher sie ihre deutschen Wurzeln haben, wird in Kapitel 1 erläutert, warum sich eine deutschstämmige Minderheit in Russland entwickelt und wie sie sich dauerhaft etablieren konnte. Die Aussiedlung nach Deutschland wird in Kapitel 2 behandelt. Im Jahr 1950 lebten rund vier Millionen Deutsche außerhalb der alten Reichsgrenzen von 1937 im Osten Europas, ein Großteil von ihnen in der Sowjetunion. Das Grundgesetz der Bundesrepublik Deutschland bezeichnet diese Menschen und ihre Nachkommen als deutsche Volkszugehörige . Sie sind berechtigt, als Aussiedler nach Deutschland einzureisen. Wenn sie bestimmte Voraussetzungen erfüllen, erhalten sie die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft und können verschiedene Integrationshilfen in Anspruch nehmen. Warum lebten sie einst in Russland und wie sind sie dort hingelangt? Warum beherrschen viele der Russlanddeutschen nicht die deutsche Sprache, obwohl sie Deutsche sind? Warum führt sie der Weg zurück in die ursprüngliche Heimat? Mit all diesen Fragestellungen werden die einheimischen Deutschen konfrontiert, wenn sie in Kontakt mit Russlanddeutschen kommen. Die Russlanddeutschen sind Nachfahren der deutschen Kolonisten in der UdSSR (Union der Sozialistischen Sowjetrepubliken). In der Tat gehören sie zwei Kulturen an. Es wäre falsch festzustellen, sie seien nur vollkommen Deutsche bzw. Russen. Und mit genau dieser Thematik beschäftigt sich diese Arbeit. Obwohl reichlich über die Russlanddeutschen gesprochen und berichtet wird, wissen viele gar nicht, wer sie wirklich sind und welches Schicksal sie mit sich tragen.

Despite the frequently invoked notion that current developments are without historical precedent, migration has been a constant feature of contemporary history, particularly in Europe. Jannis Panagiotidis considers a particular type of migration, co-ethnic migration, where migrants seek admission to a country based on their purported ethnicity or nationality being the same as the country of destination. Panagiotidis looks at immigration from Germany to Israel in three individual cases where migrants were not allowed to enter the country. These rejections confound notions of an "open door" or a "return to the homeland" and present contrasting ideas of descent, culture, blood, and race. Panagiotidis shows that migration is never a simple matter of moving from place to place. Questions of historical origins, immigrant selection and screening, and national belonging are deeply ambiguous and complicate migration even in nations that are purported to be ethnically homogenous.

Book excerpt: Imagined Homes: Soviet German Immigrants in Two Cities is a study of the social and cultural integration of two migrations of German speakers from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union to Winnipeg, Canada in the late 1940s, and Bielefeld, Germany in the 1970s. Employing a cross-national comparative framework, Hans Werner reveals that the imagined trajectory of immigrant lives influenced the process of integration into a new urban environment. Winnipeg’s migrants chose a receiving society where they knew they would again be a minority group in a foreign country, while Bielefeld’s newcomers believed they were “going home” and were unprepared for the conflict between their imagined homeland and the realities of post-war Germany. Werner also shows that differences in the way the two receiving societies perceived immigrants, and the degree to which secularization and the sexual and media revolutions influenced these perceptions in the two cities, were crucially important in the immigrant experience.

In this book, leading historians and social scientists analyze and compare a variety of settlement processes in past and present migration to Western Europe. Identifying general factors in the process of adaptation of new immigrants, the contributors trace social changes effected by recent European immigration, and the parallels with the great American migration of the 1880s-1920s. The history of migration to Western Europe and the way these migrants found their place in the receiving societies, is not only essential to understand the way nations deal with newcomers in the present, but also constitutes a highly interesting laboratory for different paths of integration now and then. By analyzing and comparing a wealth of settlement processes both in the past and in the present this book is both a bold interdisciplinary endeavor, and at the same time the first attempt to identify general factors underlying the way migrants adapt to their new surroundings, as well as how societies change under the influence of immigration.
