Book Synopsis Non-Financial Performance Measures as Coordination Devices by : Stanley Baiman
Download or read book Non-Financial Performance Measures as Coordination Devices written by Stanley Baiman and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates how non-financial performance measures (NPMs) can be used to encourage cooperation across divisions. The implementation of a project often requires joint efforts by multiple divisions. However, privately informed division managers sometimes find it in their self-interest to forgo profitable joint projects or to underinvest in relationship-specific assets that would increase the projects' profitability. By treating the implementation of a joint project (e.g., a major process improvement or new product development) as an NPM, we show that paying the division managers discrete bonuses tied to this NPM improves the efficiency of project implementation and upfront investments. We derive in detail how the optimal implementation bonus trades off distortions in ex-post implementation and ex-ante investments. In a dynamic version of the base model with learning-by-doing, we develop a fast-track theory of bonus payments: conditional on a project being implemented early on, the implementation bonus in subsequent periods will be higher than if the earlier project had not been implemented.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Measures by : Martin Bennett
Download or read book Sustainable Measures written by Martin Bennett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental and social performance measurement and reporting by business has become a high-profile issue during the 1990s. It is increasingly being requested by stakeholders and required by governments. Companies too are finding that they need better environmental and social performance data for effective internal management. And there are a growing number of standardisation initiatives – such as the ISO 14031 guidelines on environmental performance evaluation or the CERES Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) template for sustainability reporting – that are aimed at making it easier for more companies to take action, and for stakeholders to compare their progress.Sustainable Measures collects together most of the key work and individuals concerned with the topic from around the world. Contributions include: environmental and social reporting by John Elkington and colleagues at SustainAbility; the GRI discussion draft; Roger Adams and Martin Houldin on the FEE study of environmental reporting; Janet Ranganathan of the World Resources Institute on sustainability measures; and Martin Bennett and Peter James on ISO 14031 and the future of environmental performance evaluation. There are also chapters examining current practice in Austria, Denmark, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands and South Africa, developments in electronic reporting, as well as case studies of Baxter, Kunert, Niagara Mohawk, Unox, The Body Shop and the UK water industry, and an analysis of leading social reports. The book is essential reading for all academics, campaigners, policy-makers and practitioners with an interest in issues such as:The standardization and comparability of environmental and social performance measuresMeasuring and reporting on sustainable businessEco-points and other means of evaluating product impactsThe implementation of measurement and reportingBest practice in corporate environmental and social reportingNew means of communicating environmental dataEnvironmental performance evaluation in developing countries

This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a theoretical and empirical framework to interpret the possible configurations of the integration between performance management and risk management systems as part of management control systems. The book provides an overview of the development paths of these three systems, outlining the evolution and the current development of these disciplines, highlighting emerging issues and providing some original considerations. The author uses both an inductive and deductive approach in shaping the proposed framework, and includes the perspective of practitioners and academics on the topic. Based on a multiple case study in listed companies and a survey administered to small and medium enterprises, this book provides readers with valuable insights to adapt the proposed framework in different business contexts.

Book excerpt: A nation's economic success depends on the capacity of its companies and trading organizations to develop business relationships, trade and do business in the international arena. Doing business across borders subtly changes the processes and skills the successful manager needs. Cultural, social, geographic and legal factors serve to complicate the picture. The mantra for managers today is think global, act local. In this handbook the authors concentrate on the big developments that currently are happening at an international level. They consider how managers operating in the global business landscape must change what they do to create advantages and remain competitive. The Global Business Handbook is based on the structure of the very successful IÉSEG International School of Management's programme on international management. It includes a global focus, backed by the latest research on different aspects of international business carried out in different parts of the world.
