This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The King Report III on Corporate Governance, 2009 was incorporated into the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) listing requirements, which meant all JSE listed companies must comply with specific corporate governance practices and disclosures and meet compliance standards in their annual reports. The implementation of mandatory compliance requirements means that South Africa is leading the way by being one of the first country¿̐ưs to fully implement mandatory integrated reporting. The global recession of 2009 saw the need for a new form of corporate reporting that moved away from the traditional accounting and reporting methods, as their failures contributed to the financial crisis. The International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) was formed in 2010 to assist the framework of corporate reporting. The IIRC emphasised the need for reporting that would cultivate a corporate reporting environment that will focus on short, medium and long 0́3 term value creation. Integrated reporting seeks to achieve concise communication about how the organisation¿̐ưs strategy, governance and performance issues, in the context of its external environment that leads to the creation of value the short, medium, and long term. The South African mining industry contributes significantly to the local economy and remains one of the world¿̐ưs biggest mineral producer. Mining, is seen as integral part of local society as it impacts various sectors and industries, whilst managing investors and stakeholder expectations simultaneously. The need for greater transparency and reporting methods on social, financial issues is important especially where an industry, like mining, impacts all three issues. Since the mandatory implementation of integrated reporting, JSE listed companies have not seen immediate success with integrated reporting, it has been understood that it shall take time to comply and integrated the requirements and to remedy shortcomings. The mining industry is not only complaint with local reporting standards but also international best practice standards, the question that is raised is, whether the disclosure principles are being correctly applied to reporting in the South African mining sector? The need for cohesive, concise reporting is important, and as to whether the South African mining industry utilises all aspects of the integrated reporting principles, to its full potential, still remains to be seen. There are shortcomings and gaps that still need to be addressed, but there remains room for improvement and change. This paper will discuss the current state of integrated reporting in the mining industry and whether the implementation of integrated reporting is effective, and a further investigation on the failures, gaps and shortcomings that are faced within integrated reporting related to South African mining industry. This analysis of the following areas will provide information to whether integrated reporting is being utilised to its full potential by analysing the King Report IV on Corporate Governance, 2016 and the IIRC framework respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability Accounting and Integrated Reporting deals with organizations’ assessment, articulation and disclosure of their social and environmental impact on various groups in society. There is increasingly an understanding that financial information does not sufficiently discharge organizational accountability to members of society who are demanding an account of the social and environmental impacts of companies’ and other organizations’ activities. As a result, organizations report ever more social and environmental information, and there are simultaneous movements towards providing the information in an integrated fashion, showing how social and environmental activities influence each other, members of society and the financial aims of the organization. The book Sustainability Accounting and Integrated Reporting provides a broad and comprehensive review of the field, focusing on the interconnection between different elements of these topics, often dealt with in isolation. The book examines the accounting involved in the collection and analysis of data, control processes over the data, how information is reported to external parties, and the assurance of the information being reported. The book thereby provides an overview useful to practitioners (including sustainability managers, consultants, members of the accounting profession, and other assurance providers), academics, and students.

Book excerpt: The lack of transparency and accountability in organizations has made it difficult to identify, measure, and disclose their sustainable practices and impacts, creating a challenge for global sustainability efforts. Furthermore, there is a lack of consensus on the determinants and impacts of non-financial information reporting. In response to these challenges, Enhancing Sustainability Through Non-Financial Reporting, a book edited by Albertina Monteiro, Ana Pinto Borges, and Elvira Vieira, offers a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between sustainability practices and reporting, and the accounting, finance, and management fields. This book provides a platform for both academics and practitioners to share their empirical and theoretical research on the contributions of organizations to sustainable development, the determinants and impacts of non-financial information reporting, the role of sustainability reporting standards, and the challenges faced by accounting, finance, management, and auditing. It is an essential resource for anyone seeking to enhance sustainability through non-financial reporting and is relevant to a wide range of audiences, including academics, practitioners, and other interested individuals and groups.

Therefore, the book unpacks the critical issues associated with the mining sector, explicitly reflecting on the practical solutions needed to address the challenges in the African mining sector. This book uniquely analyses and adds flavour to international mining’s fundamental concepts by describing a simulated annealing-based approach appropriate for complex mining projects in Africa. Book contributors comprise of academics from different universities including professors, practitioners, government policymakers, NGO executives and a variety of different experts. This multidisciplinary book will be of interest to African policymakers, governments, academics, industry professionals, energy and mining institutions, international organisations, universities across the globe and companies.

Book excerpt: This book examines the important role which civil society organisations in South Africa play in challenging poor corporate governance in state-owned enterprises and demanding better government accountability, transparency and citizen participation. The book provides a powerful examination of the shortcomings in corporate governance in South Africa's state-owned enterprises, highlighting how civil society organisations, as citizen representatives, can push for change. It examines the legal provisions used by civil society organisations in South Africa to advance good corporate governance and accountability in state-owned enterprises. The book demonstrates the need for an enabling legal environment for civil society organisations to challenge poor governance in state-owned enterprises. Also critical is enforcing laws, so those responsible for poor corporate governance in SOEs are held accountable. The book will be useful to policy advisors, public servants and social justice activists, as well as to postgraduate students and researchers who are interested in African governance and accountability.
