Book excerpt: The Land Use, Air Quality, and Transportation Integrated Modeling Environment (LATIME) represents an integrated approach to computer modeling and simulation of land use allocation, travel demand, and mobile source emissions for the Albuquerque, New Mexico, area. This environment provides predictive capability combined with a graphical and geographical interface. The graphical interface shows the causal relationships between data and policy scenarios and supports alternative model formulations. Scenarios are launched from within a Geographic Information System (GIS), and data produced by each model component at each time step within a simulation is stored in the GIS. A menu-driven query system is utilized to review link-based results and regional and area-wide results. These results can also be compared across time or between alternative land use scenarios. Using this environment, policies can be developed and implemented based on comparative analysis, rather than on single-step future projections. 16 refs., 3 figs., 2 tabs.

The understanding of the land use, transport and environment system is often guided by limited experience. The complexity of the urban system is, therefore, often not fully understood. There is a need to develop a computer-based integrated land use-transport-environment model to deal with the urban changes and the complexity of the urban system and to assist in understanding this relationship. An integrated land use-transport interaction model, CityPlan, has been developed to help educate students, transport engineers, urban planners and the community in understanding the complexities of the urban system. CityPlan is a refined version of the LAND package which was initially developed at Monash University as an educational tool for land use-transport-environment studies. CityPlan has been used in various institutions and organisations in Asia, Europe and North America. This paper outlines the general structure of the CityPlan model and describes the three basic modelling components and their interaction in CityPlan: the land use model, the transport model, and the environment model.
