The Dark Side of European Integration argues that this rising nationalism and the mobilization of the radical right are the consequences of European economic integration. The European economic project has produced a cultural backlash in the form of nationalist radical right ideologies. This assessment relies on a detailed analysis of the electoral rise of radical right parties in Western and Eastern Europe. Contrary to popular belief, economic performance and immigration rates are not the only factors that determine the far right's success. There are other political and social factors that explain why in post-socialist Eastern European countries such parties had historically been weaker than their potential, which they have now started to fulfill increasingly. Using in-depth interviews with radical right activists in Ukraine, Alina Polyakova also explores how radical right mobilization works on the ground through social networks, allowing new insights into how social movements and political parties interact.

Nessa perspectiva, o presente trabalho divide-se em quatro capítulos, da seguinte maneira: No capítulo 1, intitulado, “Integração Regional: conceitos e debates teóricos”, discutimos as principais correntes analíticas sobre o fenômeno de integração regional, buscando, em seus maiores expoentes, ilustrar as diferentes visões teóricas sobre o tema. Portanto, o debate se inicia a partir de uma análise sobre os conceitos de Federalismo, (Neo) Funcionalismo, Transnacionalismo, Intergovernamentalismo, Governança Supranacional e Europeização. Já no capítulo 2, intitulado, “Os antecedentes da Integração Europeia”, buscamos discutir a gênese e a evolução do arranjo regional europeu por meio de um debate sobre os avanços da integração no subcontinente, especialmente após a segunda guerra mundial. No terceiro capítulo, intitulado “A União Europeia”, analisamos cada elemento que compõe a estrutura institucional do bloco e debatemos sobre as atribuições de cada organismo - Comissão Europeia, Conselho da União Europeia, Parlamento Europeu, Conselho Europeu, Órgão Assessores, Órgãos de Controles e Banco Central Europeu. Book excerpt: Few events over the past few decades have given rise to an amount of debate and speculation concerning the state of the European Union (EU) and the future of European integration as the economic and financial crisis that began in 2007. In spite of substantial media, policy-making and academic attention, the fundamental questions of why and how the euro area (EA) has remained not only intact but also expanded and integrated further during the crisis require deeper theoretical investigation. One needs to understand not only the economics but also the politics and institutions of the crisis. A lack of such an understanding is the reason why a number of observers, at least initially, had a hard time making sense of policy-makers’ decisions (and pace thereof), including why the EA did not implode as some predicted. Economic theories provide a certain perspective for why the crisis occurred and what economic policies were and are needed to resolve it; however, they fail to capture the deeper roots and management of the crisis. In order to improve our understanding of a discussion that has oscillated between fears of EA disintegration on the one hand and the concrete advancement of integration during the crisis on the other, this special collection brings together leading scholars of European integration who apply key theoretical approaches – from liberal intergovernmentalism and neofunctionalism to other prominent theoretical accounts that have been applied to European integration such as historical institutionalism, critical political economy, normative theory, and a public opinion approach – to the economic and financial crisis.
