Book Synopsis Women and Musical Salons in the Enlightenment: by : Rebecca Cypess
Download or read book Women and Musical Salons in the Enlightenment: written by Rebecca Cypess and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-05-20 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of musical salons in Europe and North America between 1760 and 1800 and the salon hostesses who shaped their musical worlds. In eighteenth-century Europe and America, musical salons—and the women who hosted and made music in them—played a crucial role in shaping their cultural environments. Musical salons served as a testing ground for new styles, genres, and aesthetic ideals, and they acted as a mediating force, bringing together professional musicians and their audiences of patrons, listeners, and performers. For the salonnière, the musical salon offered a space between the public and private spheres that allowed her to exercise cultural agency. In this book, musicologist and historical keyboardist Rebecca Cypess offers a broad overview of musical salons between 1760 and 1800, placing the figure of the salonnière at its center. Cypess then presents a series of in-depth case studies that meet the salonnière on her own terms. Women such as Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy in Paris, Marianna Martines in Vienna, Sara Levy in Berlin, Angelica Kauffman in Rome, and Elizabeth Graeme in Philadelphia come to life in multidimensional ways. Crucially, Cypess uses performance as a tool for research, and her interpretations draw on her experience with the instruments and performance practices used in eighteenth-century salons. In this accessible, interdisciplinary book, Cypess explores women’s agency and authorship, reason and sentiment, and the roles of performing, collecting, listening, and conversing in the formation of eighteenth-century musical life.

Book Synopsis Music of the past, instruments and imagination by : Michael Latcham
Download or read book Music of the past, instruments and imagination written by Michael Latcham and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This volume presents the proceedings of the second International Congress organised in Lausanne by the harmoniques Foundation and held in the Spring of 2004. The papers were given by experts on brass and stringed keyboard instruments. The emphasis was on a variety of historical instrument-making traditions and on the history of the revival of the use of early instruments. The contributions not only included detailed discussions regarding the parameters of performance practice and the use of historical instruments but also about the inspiration given by some of the leading revivalists in these fields. In many cases the contributors placed a special focus on the performance of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Book Synopsis The Harpsichord Stringing Handbook by : Thomas Donahue
Download or read book The Harpsichord Stringing Handbook written by Thomas Donahue and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The harpsichord was the standard keyboard instrument for three centuries before the invention of the piano. It enjoyed a revival in the second half of the twentieth century, but because of the interruption in its history as a more regularly used instrument, many details about its construction are lacking. In The Harpsichord Stringing Handbook, Thomas Donahue integrates available historical evidence and modern physical principles—from both musicological and scientific literature—to provide practical quantitative information about the stringing of this instrument. The Harpsichord Stringing Handbook covers the composition and properties of iron and brass wire, the interrelationship of frequency to string length, safety factors involved with stringing, the scaling of string lengths, the calculation of diameters, and the determination of the transition from iron to brass in mixed-strung instruments. Supplemental topics include the elasticity and plasticity of wire, inharmonicity, tension and stress, and the interpolation of string lengths. Additional material includes data on selected historical harpsichords, absolute diameters of historical gauge numbering systems, a generated list of tensile strength values for historical wire, and sizes and tensile strengths of currently available wire. This book offers specific guidance for instrument makers, restorers, curators, technicians, musicians, kit builders, wire manufacturers, and acousticians, filling in critical details that historical treatises and surviving instruments may not clearly address.

Book Synopsis The Seventh Dragon by : Anita Sullivan
Download or read book The Seventh Dragon written by Anita Sullivan and published by Unlimited Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2005-05 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A veteran piano tuner presents a literary, minimally technical view of the quixotic tuning systems used on keyboard instruments for hundreds of years. The work explains temperament strategies accessibly and reflects on the technical process of piano tuning in both practical and philosophical terms. When Anita Sullivan started a second career as a piano tuner 25 years ago, she was immediately puzzled by the piano's complicated tuning system. Surprised to learn that her new profession was not only technically complex, but in fact required artistic judgements she set herself to describing the tuning system in a way that would make sense to ordinary listeners, rather than piano technicians alone. Her exceptional book was the result, now updated for a new generation of readers [Publisher description].
Book Synopsis The Guitar in Georgian England by : Christopher Page
Download or read book The Guitar in Georgian England written by Christopher Page and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating social history of the guitar, reasserting its long-forgotten importance in Romantic England This book is the first to explore the popularity and novelty of the guitar in Georgian England, noting its impact on the social, cultural, and musical history of the period. The instrument possessed an imagery as rich as its uses were varied; it emerged as a potent symbol of Romanticism and was incorporated into poetry, portraiture, and drama. In addition, British and Irish soldiers returning from war in Spain and Portugal brought with them knowledge of the Spanish guitar and its connotations of stylish masculinity. Christopher Page presents entirely new scholarship in order to place the guitar within a multifaceted context, drawing from recently digitized original source material. The Guitar in Georgian England champions an instrument whose importance in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is often overlooked.
Book Synopsis La note bleue by : Jacqueline Waeber
Download or read book La note bleue written by Jacqueline Waeber and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Musique et geste en France de Lully à la Révolution written by Jacqueline Waeber and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
