To be influential in the classroom, teachers need to have strong self-efficacy, which refers to their belief that they can plan and make good judgments on best practices. Instructional leaders in a building can aid teachers and promote teacher self-efficacy by supplying resources and instructional support, while also casting vision and setting goals. However, due to the demands and time restrictions placed on administrators in schools, instructional coaches can support the instructional climate by supporting teachers and providing necessary guidance and tools to promote teacher self-efficacy. The purpose of this causal-comparative study was to determine if instructional coach self-efficacy significantly impacted teacher self-efficacy in a suburban district in a southern state. The Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) was distributed to all content-area teachers, kindergarten through twelfth grade, in a suburban district in a southern state through email; additionally, all instructional coaches in the district were invited to complete The Instructional Coaching Skills Instrument (ICSI). The sample included 100 content area teachers and 30 instructional coaches. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine if significant differences existed between the groups of the independent variable on the dependent variable. Results were not statistically significant; however, scores on TSES were consistently above average.

In this study, I explored instructional coaching and coaches' perceived effectiveness as they work with teachers. A look at the effect of non-evaluative feedback with an instructional coach, and how that helps sustain teachers' pedagogical practice, is taken into consideration as coaches' work towards developing teacher efficacy. I examined instructional coaching through the conceptual framework of professional development and change. This qualitative study included a focus group, personal narratives, and individual interviews to analyze the components of successful instructional coaching models, and how well instructional coaches feel supported as they work with teachers. Findings demonstrated that instructional coaches perceive their work with teachers to be effective and provided information on the practices and conditions that surround their work. The information gained from the study provides a resource for district leaders to evaluate a current coaching model program, or implement a new coaching model program, within their district.

Since there is a lack of understanding of the differing roles served by instructional coaches in schools and the functions they perform that influence teacher utilization of best practice procedures in teaching, this study concentrated on giving voice to teachers and administrators regarding their concerns and changes in teaching behavior. By listening to the assertions of educators employed within the schools housing an instructional coach, it is possible to gain an in-depth understanding of how the presence of an instructional coach influences, or does not influence, the efforts or initiatives undertaken by the school and district to positively influence student performance. The intent of this qualitative case study was to examine the roles played by instructional coaches in two schools in the third largest district within the state of Mississippi and how administrators, teachers, and students (the stakeholders) are affected by the presence of instructional coaches within this environment, inclusive of hindrances or problems perceived. Recommendations included: (a) school districts should locate funds to assign an instructional coach to every school, (b) train the principal of the school housing an instructional coach so he understands the roles, exclusions, and possibilities inherent in the position, (c) write a detailed job description for the coaching position and devise a list of tasks the coach is NOT to perform, such as substitute in classes and evaluate teachers, to clarify the expectations for the program and communicate the true mission of the position, (d) make certain through the principal that teachers are aware of the roles to be served within the school by the instructional coach, emphasizing the fact that the coach is not a supervisor and will not serve in an evaluative capacity.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to investigate elementary teachers’ perceptions of instructional coaching compared to their years of experience and their levels of education. This researcher worked cooperatively with one rural school district in north, central North Carolina and used an online survey instrument with both open- and closed-ended questions to gather data. Two hundred sixty-three elementary classroom teachers were asked to complete the survey; 131 teachers did so with a response rate of 49.8%. Chi square statistical tests were run for the Likert responses on the quantitative portion, and open-ended coding was used for the qualitative piece. Results indicated that there was no significant difference in teacher perceptions of instructional coaching according to their levels of education and little significant difference in perceptions according to years of experience. Open-ended responses indicate that further research should be done to explore instructional coaching training needs, time limitations, other non-coaching responsibilities, and roles of instructional coaches.

Increased teacher accountability and new federal mandates forced districts to evaluate curriculum and drive instructional decisions based on student data. Instructional coaching emerged as a promising initiative to improve teacher instruction and increase student achievement. This qualitative study sought to expand the current research based on instructional coaching as a form of professional development that improves teacher instruction and student achievement. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine coaches' perceptions of their role and responsibilities in the improvement of teacher instruction and student achievement; it also focused on analyzing coaches' perceptions of the enhancing and limiting factors to their efforts. Two instruments, an electronic questionnaire and interview, were used to collect the data for this study. Instructional coaches from a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 9 school districts in eastern Pennsylvania completed an electronic questionnaire; 3 instructional coaches participated in a voluntary interview. An analysis of the data revealed 4 themes: instructional coaches believe their work is improving student achievement; trust is essential to establishing a productive coach-teacher relationship; respecting the confidential nature of the coach-teacher relationship is critical; and the assignment of non-coaching responsibilities hinders progress.

Book excerpt: This case study was an exploration of how instructional coaches self-perceived the role and the responsibilities of the role, the barriers encountered in the role, and the professional development needs of both novice and seasoned instructional coaches. Results revealed that the role of an instructional coach is ill-defined, and the role can often be complicated by the lack of a shared definition of the role. Data also revealed that a lack of time allocated for carrying out duties assigned to instructional coaches along with the lack of experience and understanding of the role serve as significant barriers encountered by coaches. An understanding of adult learning theory and practice was noted in this study as the most critical professional development need among coaches. Recommendations from this study include the need for school districts to develop research-based job-descriptions for instructional coaches, increased opportunities for professional development specific to the development of an understanding of adult learning theory and practice, along with the establishment of preparation programs for educators entering the role of the instructional coach.
