Book excerpt: This book takes a fresh look at programs for advanced studies for high school students in the United States, with a particular focus on the Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate programs, and asks how advanced studies can be significantly improved in general. It also examines two of the core issues surrounding these programs: they can have a profound impact on other components of the education system and participation in the programs has become key to admission at selective institutions of higher education. By looking at what could enhance the quality of high school advanced study programs as well as what precedes and comes after these programs, this report provides teachers, parents, curriculum developers, administrators, college science and mathematics faculty, and the educational research community with a detailed assessment that can be used to guide change within advanced study programs.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instruction in Physics in Small High Schools: A Report of a Committee of the Eastern Association of Physics Teachers This committee was appointed to investigate the conditions of instruction in Physics in the smaller High Schools, with the purpose of securing information concerning existing practices, and of rendering such assistance as the Association might be able to give these schools. Since the College Entrance Examination Board has issued a new list of topics and experiments, which will constitute the basis of college examinations, this committee has sought to harmonize these requirements with the needs and limitations of the schools considered in this report. The needs of the larger number of pupils who do not prepare for college have been still more care fully considered. This committee has sent out' a series of questions to 334 New England secondary school principals and has received 183 replies. The schools included in this list are those schools whose enrol ment was supposed to be between 25 and 150 pupils. 'these replies have been tabulated and a summary of these replies is given in this report, together with the questions asked. Book excerpt: Physics at the beginning of the twenty-first century has reached new levels of accomplishment and impact in a society and nation that are changing rapidly. Accomplishments have led us into the information age and fueled broad technological and economic development. The pace of discovery is quickening and stronger links with other fields such as the biological sciences are being developed. The intellectual reach has never been greater, and the questions being asked are more ambitious than ever before. Physics in a New Era is the final report of the NRC's six-volume decadal physics survey. The book reviews the frontiers of physics research, examines the role of physics in our society, and makes recommendations designed to strengthen physics and its ability to serve important needs such as national security, the economy, information technology, and education.

Book excerpt: This book on the teaching and learning of physics is intended for college-level instructors, but high school instructors might also find it very useful. Some ideas found in this book might be a small 'tweak' to existing practices whereas others require more substantial revisions to instruction. The discussions of student learning herein are based on research evidence accumulated over decades from various fields, including cognitive psychology, educational psychology, the learning sciences, and discipline-based education research including physics education research. Likewise, the teaching suggestions are also based on research findings. As for any other scientific endeavor, physics education research is an empirical field where experiments are performed, data are analyzed and conclusions drawn. Evidence from such research is then used to inform physics teaching and learning. While the focus here is on introductory physics taken by most students when they are enrolled, however, the ideas can also be used to improve teaching and learning in both upper-division undergraduate physics courses, as well as graduate-level courses. Whether you are new to teaching physics or a seasoned veteran, various ideas and strategies presented in the book will be suitable for active consideration.

Book excerpt: Physics Education for Students: An Interdisciplinary Approach is a compilation of reviews that highlight new approaches and trends in teaching and learning specific topics on physics to high school and university students. The reviews cover different areas of physics education (laboratory activities, mathematics, philosophy and history) and the ways that learning outcomes can be improved. These distinguished areas can generate complexities and difficulties for students in learning some concepts since the same topics are often presented while following approaches that do not highlight the existing correlations among the involved disciplines. The reviewers discuss an integrated framework for readers with the objective to promote the inclusion of specific laboratory activities and mathematics contents for physics courses addressed to university students, with evidence of the importance of combining a historical and philosophical approach as well. Specific topics in this book include the benefits of active learning in physics education, dialogic best practices in science education, research-based proposals on optical spectroscopy in secondary schools, didactic principles and e-learning in physics and expansive framing in physics laboratories. Physics Education for Students: An Interdisciplinary Approach, with its selection of expert reviews is an interesting read for academics and researchers involved in STEM education, at the school or college level.

Book excerpt: (Purpose) This article describes the use of tiered instruction, a specific form of differentiation, within the author's high school Physics classroom. A background and discussion on the nature of tiered instruction is also included. (Findings) Topics addressed in this paper include: (1) the necessity of differentiation within the classroom; (2) the basis of differentiation within educational theory; (3) tiered instruction as a form of differentiation; (4) methods of tiered instruction; (5) existing research on tiered instruction's impact on academic parameters; (6) a justification for tiered instruction within a general Physics course; (7) application of tiered instruction in the context of a laboratory exercise; (8) results of student surveys regarding learning and motivation from tiered instruction. (Conclusions) Trends emerged from student surveys showing small, but positive trends in learning and motivation due to the unique grouping of tiered instruction. Further research, with greater depth, sample size, and longitude, should be undertaken to show statistically significant results. (Contains 3 tables.).
