Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instinct as Related to Education Fear is strongest in the child at about three or four years of age. This is due in part, perhaps, to the fact that his imagi nation is very active and his judgment immature. The child experiences many fears in the dark, due, no doubt, to the fact that his senses cannot contradict what his imagination con jures up. This does not argue against the instinctive nature of fear. Fear easily tends to become morbid in children. They should be guarded against sudden frights. While fear is one of nature's correctives and has much survival value, when functioning normally, yet it Should never be used as a moral corrective by parents and teachers. Children Should never be frightened into being good. Because of its effectiveness in getting immediate results, it has been used very much in the past, to the hurt of the child. If we should eliminate all fear from the human soul, much of the best in life would be lost. The child should be taught to fear aright. Too much fear leads to timidity and cowardice. A wholesome amount of fear tends to make the child cautious and prudent. In varying degrees, fear 1s a universal instinct in the lower animals as well as in man. One knows how easily a horse is frightened at a sudden noise or strange object. We have all watched the actions of the timorous mouse. Young chickens, without previous experience with such a danger, crouch or run to cover on the appearance of a hawk or other bird of prey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instinct in Man: A Contribution to the Psychology of Education Our purpose is to attempt to give a psychological account of Instinct in Man, and thereafter to study, still in the main from the psychological point of View, the relation of Instinct to Emotion, with special reference to human emotions, and the part which Instinct plays in that phase of human development to which we give the name Education. We must, therefore, first of all get a clear idea of what is involved in a 'psychological account.' That we shall make our aim in the present chapter, and we shall also endeavour to arrive at what might be called a working notion of Instinct from the psychological point of View, as a preliminary to the more detailed study of Instinct with the object of attaining a scientific view of it within the universe of discourse of psychology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Instinct in Education Many of the subjects treated under the chap ter headings were then far less in the public eye. Six years ago only the first of the playground congresses had been held; story-tellers' leagues and clubs in town and city were exceptions rather than the rule; dancing was utilized far less than at present, in schools and other institu tions; and pageantry, in its modern form, was not yet introduced into this country. Also, con ditions affecting public amusements were less subject to scientific investigation. The delay in publishing has, howeve'r, had its advantages. The subjects have now become matters of popu lar knowledge and interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instinct and Intelligence The meaning of the term Education is "to draw out what is in a child"; it therefore includes the training of his inherited instinctive disposition or character, as well as the "putting in" needful knowledge, or the "instruction" of his intellectual faculties. Educationists of the present time appear to exaggerate the importance of training the intellect, and are apt to overlook the fact that each individual possesses certain instinctive qualities which to a large extent determine his behaviour throughout life. These qualities, which no human power can eradicate, may, however, be favourably modified by appropriate training. But why music excites such deep passions, and how we make sense of musical sound at all, are questions that have until recently remained unanswered. Now in The Music Instinct, award-winning writer Philip Ball provides the first comprehensive, accessible survey of what is known--and still unknown--about how music works its magic, and why, as much as eating and sleeping, it seems indispensable to humanity. Deftly weaving together the latest findings in brain science with history, mathematics, and philosophy, The Music Instinct not only deepens our appreciation of the music we love, but shows that we would not be ourselves without it. The Sunday Times hailed it as "a wonderful account of why music matters," with Ball's "passion for music evident on every page."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instinct and Experience In the summer of 1910 a symposium on the subject of Instinct and Intelligence was held in London at a joint meeting of the Aristotelian and British Psychological Societies and of the Mind Association. Considerable interest in the discussion was shown both in the room in which we met and beyond its walls. The papers then taken as read, and subsequently published in the "British Journal of Psychology," disclose not a little divergence in the sense in which the terms instinctive and intelligent are used, an underlying divergence in the principles on which the proffered interpretations are based, and indications, more or less clear, of yet deeper-seated differences of philosophical foundation. The questions at issue seem to open out live problems, and problems of wide range. Being under promise to write a short work on some aspect of genetic psychology I thought I might do some service by expanding my own contribution to the symposium, by bringing it into relation with the views expressed by other contributors, by following up the subject in further detail, and especially by giving something like definite form to the doctrine of experience, which has, of late years, been taking shape in my mind, under influences too numerous to admit of detailed citation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. It was to keep his hand from bearing the weight of his body and leave it free for the club and the stone that he originally rose up on his hind legs and acquired the erect position of which we are so proud. It was the new uses to which the hand was put with the weapon, the tool, that built up the brain SO that speech and thought became possible. As shrewd old Benjamin Franklin said a hundred years ago, Man is a tool using animal. Yet a large body of respectable taxpayers protest against the introduction of manual training into our schools as a waste of public money! Train the hand, then answer half the questions that the brain which it builds will ask - and you have education at its best. Book excerpt: A criminal behavior expert teams up with an NYPD detective to track down a criminal in the novel that inspired the hit CBS TV series starring Alan Cumming. Dr. Dylan Reinhart wrote the book on criminal behavior. Literally: he's a renowned, bestselling Ivy League expert on the subject. When a copy of his book turns up at a gruesome murder scene-along with a threatening message from the killer-it looks like someone has been taking notes. Elizabeth Needham is the headstrong and brilliant NYPD Detective in charge of the case who recruits Dylan to help investigate another souvenir left at the scene: a playing card. Another murder, another card. . . and now Dylan suspects that the cards aren't a signature; they're a deadly hint pointing directly toward the next victim. As tabloid headlines about the killer known as "The Dealer" scream from newsstands, New York City descends into panic. With the cops at a loss, it's up to Dylan to hunt down a serial killer unlike any the city has ever seen. Only someone with Dylan's expertise can hope to go inside the mind of a criminal and convince The Dealer to lay down his cards. But after thinking like a criminal, could Dylan become one? A heart-pounding novel of suspense more shocking than any tabloid true crime story, Instinct introduces the next unforgettable character from the imagination of James Patterson, the world's #1 bestselling author.
