Book excerpt: Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) revolutionized transportation at the dawn of the 20th century. Continuous refinement of the theory and design of ICE has allowed them to become so well optimized to the task of human transport that they are often taken for granted, only thought of on the rare occasion when they fail to work properly. Nobody speaks about the challenge of designing an ICE that is acceptable for the task of moving people from one place to another. Today, in the age of the remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), another opportunity arises to instigate the continuous refinement of the ICE to a novel task. Small ICE have been used to propel small model aircraft for decades, but the recent exponential growth in demand for RP A in military applications has given rise to an expectation from small ICE which far surpasses current capabilities: RPA require the ability to operate at higher altitudes, in more extreme environmental conditions, and with greater fuel efficiency than is currently possible. Small internal combustion engines, particularly those ranging in power from 1 kW to 15 kW, propel many Group 1 and Group 2 remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) platforms that play an increasingly significant role in the Department of Defense. Most engines used for defense applications are commercial off-the-shelf products, designed for hand tools and hobby aircraft. Efficiency of these engines is low and thermal loss is a significant contributor to the energy loss. Existing thermal energy loss models are based on data from much larger engines. Whether these loss models scale to the engine size class of interest, however, has not yet been established. The Small Engine Research Bench (SERB) was used previously to measure spatially and temporally averaged heat flux, as well as local, instantaneous heat flux at several external locations, for a series of small engines. This investigation will obtain time averaged crank-angle-resolved measurements of the in-cylinder gas temperature using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption thermometry. The results, coupled with heat flux measurements, will enable the validation or refinement of existing thermal energy loss models.- author's summary

Book Synopsis Internal Combustion Engines by : Colin R. Ferguson
Download or read book Internal Combustion Engines written by Colin R. Ferguson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the Second Edition in 2001, there have been considerable advances and developments in the field of internal combustion engines. These include the increased importance of biofuels, new internal combustion processes, more stringent emissions requirements and characterization, and more detailed engine performance modeling, instrumentation, and control. There have also been changes in the instructional methodologies used in the applied thermal sciences that require inclusion in a new edition. These methodologies suggest that an increased focus on applications, examples, problem-based learning, and computation will have a positive effect on learning of the material, both at the novice student, and practicing engineer level. This Third Edition mirrors its predecessor with additional tables, illustrations, photographs, examples, and problems/solutions. All of the software is ‘open source’, so that readers can see how the computations are performed. In addition to additional java applets, there is companion Matlab code, which has become a default computational tool in most mechanical engineering programs.
Book Synopsis Time-dependent Surface Temperature and Heat Flux Measurements on a Single Cylinder Engine Head and Liner by : Stephanie Treiss
Download or read book Time-dependent Surface Temperature and Heat Flux Measurements on a Single Cylinder Engine Head and Liner written by Stephanie Treiss and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing the data from both experiments, the instantaneous heat flux decayed most rapidly due to CCD at the head locations nearest the spark plug (H3 and H4). After 10 hours, the heat flux at H3 and H4 was essentially constant over the cycle, while the peak heat flux at all other locations remained at 30 to 60% of their maximum value, depending on the location. The cumulative heat flux over the cycle after 10 hours decreased to 65 to 80% of the maximum at the head locations and 90 to 100% at the liner; whereas, the head cumulative heat flux fell to 80 to 95% of their starting values and the liner to 75 to 90% after 3 hours. The deposits observed after each experiment were thicker at the head locations than the liner, with the thickest, black deposits residing at H3 and H4 where the peak heat flux declined the most. The thicknesses at H3 and H4 were 281.1 and 204.5 μm after 10 hours, and 137.6 and 138.8 μm after 3 hours, respectively. The deposit for the liner locations was thickest at L4 and L5 on the exhaust side of the engine. The deposit thicknesses at L4 and L5 were 24.0 and 24.1 μm after 10 hours, and 6.9 and 11.5 μm after 3 hours, respectively.

Book Synopsis Heat and Mass Transfer in Gasoline and Diesel Engines by : Dudley Brian Spalding
Download or read book Heat and Mass Transfer in Gasoline and Diesel Engines written by Dudley Brian Spalding and published by Core/Mechanical. This book was released on 1989 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editors explain that the classical formulae and techniques for predicting heat flow do not apply to the unique conditions found in reciprocating engines. They warn the reader--presumed to be aspiring designers of more efficient and less polluting engines--that although these papers, from every country where engineering is practiced, contain nearly all the available knowledge on the subject, no definitive answers emerge, no breakthroughs loom around the next equation. The topics include the transfer of engine heat and of external heat, numerical flow simulation, applications and devices, ignition and quenching, and measurement techniques. Book Synopsis Diesel Cylinder Gas-Side Heat Flux to a Ceramic Surface by : Gary L. Borman
Download or read book Diesel Cylinder Gas-Side Heat Flux to a Ceramic Surface written by Gary L. Borman and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of four research projects each dealing with instantaneous heat flux to the cylinder head of reciprocating engine are given. The projects are: heat flux to the cylinder head of a reciprocating engine are given. The projects are: heat flux measurements in a diesel engine with variations in injection pressure, nozzle tips and swirl; development of instrumentation for radiation measurements in a diesel cylinder; heat flux measurements to various surfaces on the head of diesel engine including a normaly cooled metal surface, an insulated metal surface and a zirconia surface; and initial attempts to simultaneously measure the fluid motion and heat flux in a motored engine boundary layer. The variation of injection pressure nozzle tips and swirl in a direct injection diesel showed strong coupling between combustion and heat flux. An instrument for radiation measurement which uses a wall jet to reduce convection is described. Compression of the jet by the combustion heat release prevents zeroing of the convection. The major portion of the research was devoted to heat flux measurements to the surface of an instrumentation plug in the head of a single TACOM-LABECO diesel. Comparisons made between data for insulated and uninsulated surfaces show that the hot metal surface gave reduced time averaged heat transfer, but gave a higher peak heat flux than a normally cooled surface. Data for zirconia plate surface gave reduced time averaged heat transfer, but gave a higher peak heat flux than a normally cooled surface. Data for zirconia plate surface showed a reduction in peak flux which was larger than predicted from the rise in surface temperature alone.
