Set out in a straightforward series of steps, it cuts through the jargon and demolishes the myths that surround this important management tool. The authors explain the importance of carrying out an initial environmental review, identifying cause and effect, understanding legislative and regulatory issues, developing a policy and defining objectives and targets. They also describe how to design an effective environmental management programme and implement a successful audit and review. Clear and concise, and packed with helpful practical examples and insider tips, it has become the standard manual for managers and consultants at all levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years more cultural institutions in hot and humid climates have been installing air-conditioning systems to protect their collections and provide comfort for both employees and visitors. This practice, however, can pose complications, including problems of installation and maintenance as well as structural damage to buildings, while failing to provide collections with a viable conservation environment. This volume offers hands-on guidance to the specific challenges involved in conserving cultural heritage in hot and humid climates. Initial chapters present scientific and geographic overviews of these climates, outline risk-based classifications for environmental control, and discuss related issues of human health and comfort. The authors then describe climate management strategies that offer effective and reliable alternatives to conventional air-conditioning systems and that require minimal intervention to the historic fabric of buildings that house collections. The book concludes with seven case studies of successful climate improvement projects undertaken by the Getty Conservation Institute in collaboration with cultural institutions around the world. Appendixes include a unit conversion table, a glossary, and a full bibliography. This book is an essential tool for cultural heritage conservators and museum curators, as well as other professionals involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of museums and other buildings housing cultural heritage collections in hot and humid climates. “It is absolutely right that conservation be in step with the socio-political context surrounding environmentally sound approaches. This text does that, and does it well. The authors have, admirably, been awarded the 2016 Prose Award for Environmental Science, and they are to be congratulated for producing a text that is seen as having an impact outside of the conservation sphere. The technical theory that underpins the text is accessible, and the solutions borne out through the case studies do present as being admirably pragmatic.”— Journal of the Institute of Conservation

Book excerpt: Over the past decade, the greening of industry has become both an issue in scientific and political debate and a generic substantive development in industry itself. This study is the product of an international collaborative research project investigating exemplary cases of successful environmental management in European companies in Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland, and Latvia with the aim of discovering the reasons and dynamics underlying them and the role environmental policy did and could play. Providing the background and context of the research project, the nine case studies concern various companies of different sizes and from different industrial branches and describe the social processes leading to substantive environmental achievements and corresponding environmental management systems. This study also evaluates the success stories in a comparative empirical, as well as theoretical, perspective with an environmental policy orientation. Case studies examine the role of a company's internal and external determinants, explaining successful corporate environmental management on the micro-level.

Book excerpt: In 1996, the Federal Facilities Council (FFC), which operates under the aegis of the National Research Council, established a standing committee on Environmental Engineering with the express purpose of providing a forum where federal environmental engineers and program managers could meet on a regular basis to exchange information about facilities-related environmental programs, policies, and issues. The committee members, like environmental program managers in other types of organizations, are increasingly concerned about achieving and demonstrating sound environmental performance by meeting the requirements of environmental regulations and limiting the impacts of their products or services on the environment. To foster communication and address concerns about EMSs, the FFC Standing Committee on Environmental Engineering hosted a one-day workshop on Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001. The workshop was held April 9, 1998, at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

Committee on the Effectiveness of Safety and Environmental Management Systems for Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Operations and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 2012 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report recommends that the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) take a holistic approach to evaluating the effectiveness offshore oil and the Safety and Environmental Management Systems (SEMS) programs of gas industry operators. According to the report, this approach should, at a minimum, include inspections, audits by the operator and BSEE, key performance indicators, and a whistleblower program. SEMS is a safety management system (SMS) aimed at shifting from a completely prescriptive regulatory approach to one that is proactive, risk based, and goal oriented in an attempt to improve safety and reduce the likelihood that events similar to the April 2010 Macondo incident will reoccur. According to the committee that produced the report, it is not possible for a regulator to create a culture of safety in an organization by inspection or audit; that culture needs to come from within the organization. To be successful, the tenets of SEMS must be fully acknowledged and accepted by workers, motivated from the top, and supported throughout the organization and must drive worker actions. The report also notes that BSEE can encourage and aid industry in development of a culture of safety by the way it measures and enforces SEMS. The committee believes BSEE should seize this opportunity to make a step change in safety culture by adopting a goal based holistic approach to evaluating the effectiveness of SEMS programs. In recommending a holistic approach to evaluating the effectiveness of SEMS programs, the report explores in detail the role of SEMS in helping to develop a culture of safety, highlights the pros and cons of various methods of assessing the effectiveness of a SEMS program, and investigates existing approaches for assessing the SMS programs of various U.S. and international regulatory agencies whose safety mandates are similar to that of BSEE.

Book excerpt: Implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS) has become a crucial consideration for large organizations. This book offers insight to practitioners and professional students as to why they have been developed, how they are implemented and the barriers that can impact on their effectiveness. A practical, experience-based text written by leading consultants and researchers, the book explores the drivers that have led to the development of environmental strategies and the benefits of formulating a complete EMS. The book examines the way in which EMSs are structured to ensure that a company achieves continuous improvement in environmental performance. Alongside practical advice for businesses that wish to achieve accreditation, the book addresses key issues to be aware of to ensure optimum benefits, different strategies that companies may adopt to establish an EMS and the challenges that arise when trying to integrate an EMS into the business strategy. Also included is a review of the ways in which academics try to categorize and predict the effectiveness of these different approaches to EMS using modelling tools. Finally, case studies are presented to demonstrate examples of companies that have implemented their own EMS, the different approaches that they have taken and the resulting issues that have emerged. This is essential reading for all environmental practitioners as well as students of environmental management and business.

Today, these issues are key operational concerns for all but the smallest organizations and apply to all sectors - the private, public and voluntary sectors. Managing them requires a growing army of environmental professionals to manage them with knowledge of a rapidly developing body of regulatory measures.Environmental Management in Organizations provides the basic resource needed by organizations and the managers they employ on the issues and on the management tools, performance measures and communication strategies available. Leading experts on each topic have provided focused explanations and clear practical guidance, as well as setting out the context and the key environmental and management drivers.
