Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March’s notes, entitled ‘The presence of God’ Beverley Shepherd reflects upon the importance of God’s presence in our lives. Drawing on the example of individuals in the Bible -- all who fervently hungered after God – she encourages us to cultivate a lifestyle in which His presence will be the keynote. In April’s notes entitled ‘Ecclesiastes: searching for meaning’, Fiona Smith investigates the principles for wise and meaningful living laid out in Ecclesiastes. Challenging us to examine our own lives, she raises the question: are we women overly concerned with ‘the accoutrements of life’ -- wealth, education, entertainment, relationships etc -- or are our eyes fixed upon the One who gives us life? A key question to ask ourselves, these notes are pertinent to us all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March’s notes, entitled ‘Lord, teach us how to pray’, Lyn Gitchel explores the many different aspects of our prayer relationship with our Father God. Starting with the example of Jesus’ teaching to His disciples in the Lord’s Prayer, Lyn then discusses the importance of forgiveness, taking our problems to the Lord, and asking for guidance, equipping, boldness, wisdom, revelation, encouragement and deliverance. Looking at biblical examples of people who prayed powerful prayers (including one asking for temporary blindness of their enemies!), Lyn discusses the principles behind prayer and submission to the Lord, encouraging readers to pray to experience a new vision of God and more of His presence in their lives. In April’s notes, ‘God’s presence in hard times’, Jeanette Henderson looks at examples of when ‘the rain of hard times’ may fall in our lives. How do we cope or choose to respond? Do we become obsessed with our worries and self-absorbed, or do we channel our worry into prayer and thanksgiving instead? Can we find God’s presence and encouragement in these times? Looking at the example of how Jesus dealt with the cruellest and hardest time of His earthly life, in Easter week, Jeanette explores the Lord’s purposes in allowing these times, His special promises and His intimate, empowering presence with us during them, then reminds us of the amazing privilege and prize awaiting us when we meet Jesus face to face. Over the weekends, Jeanette also meditates on what it means to truly give our burdens to the Lord.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taiwanese society is in the midst of an immense, exciting effort to define itself, seeking to erect a contemporary identity upon the foundation of a highly distinctive history. This book provides a thorough overview of Taiwanese cultural life. The introduction familiarizes students and interested readers with the island's key geographical and demographic features, and provides a chronological summary of Taiwanese history. In the following chapters, Davison and Reed reveal the uniqueness of Taiwan, and do not present it simply as the laboratory of traditional Chinese culture that some anthropologists of the 1950s through the 1970s sought when mainland China was not accessible. The authors examine how religious devotion in Taiwan is different from China in that the selected deities are those most relevant to the needs of the Taiwanese people. Literature and art, particularly of the 20th century, reflect the Taiwanese quest for identity more than the grand Chinese tradition. The Taiwanese architecture, festivals and leisure activities, music and dance, cuisine and fashion, are also highlighted topics. The final chapter presents the most recent information regarding children and education, and explores the importance of the Taiwanese family in the context of meaningful relationships amongst acquaintances, friends, and institutions that make up the social universe of the Taiwanese. This text is a lively treatment of one of the world's most dynamic societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Historian Georgina Hickey investigates challenges to the code of urban gender segregation in the 20th century, focusing on organized advocacy to make the public spaces of American cities accessible to women. She traces waves of activism from the Progressive Era, with its calls for "public restrooms, rooming houses, anti-spitting ordinances, covered bus stops, employment bureaus, lunch rooms, and women police," through and beyond second-wave feminism, and its focus on the creation of alternative, women-only spaces. In doing so, Hickey looks at how class, race, and sexuality shaped activists' agendas and shaped women's experiences of urban space and the gains and limitations of this activism. She uses a wide range of archival material, from press coverage to neighborhood association records to etiquette manuals, and studies a variety of cities, from Minneapolis to Atlanta. Throughout, she draws connections between the vulnerability of women in public spaces, real and presumed, and contemporary debates surrounding rape culture, bathroom bills, and domestic violence. Ultimately, Hickey unveils the institutionalized hierarchies that have made women feel uncomfortable in American cities and the "both strikingly successful and incomplete" initiatives activists undertook to open up public space to women. The manuscript is organized into eight chapters that move chronologically through the twentieth century, with an epilogue that reflects on how these issues manifest in the present"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At supermarkets across the nation, customers waiting in line—mostly female—flip through magazines displayed at the checkout stand. What we find on those magazine racks are countless images of food and, in particular, women: moms preparing lunch for the team, college roommates baking together, working women whipping up a meal in under an hour, dieters happy to find a lowfat ice cream that tastes great. In everything from billboards and product packaging to cooking shows, movies, and even sex guides, food has a presence that conveys powerful gender-coded messages that shape our society. Kitchen Culture in America is a collection of essays that examine how women's roles have been shaped by the principles and practice of consuming and preparing food. Exploring popular representations of food and gender in American society from 1895 to 1970, these essays argue that kitchen culture accomplishes more than just passing down cooking skills and well-loved recipes from generation to generation. Kitchen culture instructs women about how to behave like "correctly" gendered beings. One chapter reveals how juvenile cookbooks, a popular genre for over a century, have taught boys and girls not only the basics of cooking, but also the fine distinctions between their expected roles as grown men and women. Several essays illuminate the ways in which food manufacturers have used gender imagery to define women first and foremost as consumers. Other essays, informed by current debates in the field of material culture, investigate how certain commodities like candy, which in the early twentieth century was advertised primarily as a feminine pleasure, have been culturally constructed. The book also takes a look at the complex relationships among food, gender, class, and race or ethnicity-as represented, for example, in the popular Southern black Mammy figure. In all of the essays, Kitchen Culture in America seeks to show how food serves as a marker of identity in American society.
