Excerpt: ... soever name or form it is presented to us. There cannot be any compromise upon this point, or any via media between a proper revelation from God in the Scripture sense of the word, and the denial of it. The Bible is God-given or it is man-given; and the short and certain way out of the difficulty or ambiguities of a subjective or internal revelation, is just the ancient proof that God has at sundry times and in divers manners spoken unto the fathers by the prophets; and that the supernatural word upon the earth, like the word of a king, must put to silence or rule the lesser oracles of reason and conscience in man. III. But there is a third point connected with the proper idea or definition of revelation to which it is necessary to advert, in the light of recent discussions. In affirming that the Bible contains a supernatural communication of truth from God, we make no distinction between different passages of the sacred volume, or different portions of its contents, as if one were more or less of a revelation than another, or as if some were and some were not a revelation at all. The general fact of the existence of a supernatural revelation, in the proper sense of the word, may be admitted while it is limited to certain departments of Scripture, and to a certain kind of Scripture truths, and denied to others. And the question is a very important one, both generally and in its bearing upon the debate as to inspiration, whether or not we are warranted and required to recognise within the Bible itself a distinction between some of its facts and statements as, strictly speaking, constituting a revelation from God, and others of its facts and statements as not entitled to that character or appellation. The distinction introduced during the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical Theology presents the key pillars of the contemporary church and the development of those doctrines as they evolved from the history of Christian thought. Most historical theology texts follow Christian beliefs in a strict chronological manner with the classic theological loci scattered throughout various time periods, movements, and controversies—making for good history but confusing theology. This companion to the classic bestseller Systematic Theology is unique among historical theologies. Gregg Allison sets out the history of Christian doctrine according to a topical-chronological arrangement—one theological element at a time instead of committing to a discussion of theological thought according to its historical appearance alone. This method allows you to: Contemplate one tenet of Christianity at a time, along with its formulation in the early church—through the Middle Ages, Reformation, and post-Reformation era, and into the modern period. Become familiar with the primary source material of Christian history's most important contributors, such as Cyprian, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Barth, and others. Understand the development of evangelical doctrine with a focus on the centrality of the gospel. Discern a sense of urgent need for greater doctrinal understanding in the whole church. Historical Theology is an easy-to-read textbook for any Christian who wants to know how the church has come to believe what it believes today. Gregg Allison's clear and concise structure make this resource an ideal introduction to Christian doctrine.

Book excerpt: In a society saturated by the doctrine of tolerance and an air of post-modernism, one might wonder about the role and significance of the once almighty Scripture. Despite what some would consider a time of revival in the church, confidence in the Scripture is consistently being undermined by cynical attitudes and critical thinking. Saucy's commentary is relevant for the times and speaks to the questioning heart and mind. He confirms not only our need for Scripture, but also its authority, its inerrancy, and its impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bad Theology is always Built Upon a Weak Foundation. Most Christians have formed their theology from a collection of sermons, books, podcasts, and independent Bible reading. That is to say, few Christians have been classically or formally trained in the study of God. As a result, many Christians hold a splintered, inconsistent, and disordered view of God, the Gospel, and His Word. In this introduction to systematic theology, Dale Partridge offers readers a foundation and starting point to build a faithful understanding of God.

It reconsiders the divided history of Protestantism: dissenters were people drawn together by the belief that they were truer to the Bible than any other Christians, yet still divided by differences in how they read it.
