Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than four decades, Alan Stringfellow's Bible studies have brought greater insight into God’s Word to thousands of believers. Now, the author of Through the Bible in One Year and Great Characters of the Bible leads readers on a chapter-by-chapter study of the book of Isaiah. Stringfellow's in-depth teaching will bring clarity and understanding to one of the most prophetic books in Scripture. With this study, readers will learn… How to identify the major themes of Isaiah All the main doctrines and truths The importance and relevance of prophecy Essential context and background for the little-known prophet Isaiah The role Isaiah plays in the coming of the Messiah By embarking on this journey, believers will learn to better understand and appreciate the role of the prophet--to foretell the future, but also to speak truth to a lost and sinful generation. Stringfellow makes powerful connections between the wealth and plenty of Isaiah's time and the abundance and decadence of our present world. The true value of this prophecy is that it occupies us with a Person, and not merely with events—the person of our Lord Jesus Christ, who came to suffer and will return to reign. All of this is foretold by a great poetic genius whose gripping words and imagery could only have been inspired by the hand of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Isaiah depicts for its readers what happens when Isaiah volunteers to become Yahweh's gofer--when he acts and speaks on Yahweh's behalf with Yahweh's authority. In this careful and insightful commentary on Isaiah, Goldingay unfolds the voices and messages of those prophetic actions and experiences. While doing this he points out that three attributes of Yahweh come into distinctive focus in Isaiah: Yahweh's majesty and authority, Yahweh's passion in anger and compassion, and Yahweh's insight and capacity to formulate a plan and put it into effect. Goldingay also examines the way Isaiah thinks about the people of God and the relationship between the vision of who they could be, the reality of who they were, the calamity of that contrast, and ultimately the promise Yahweh offers to them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engaging volume, Capetz argues that Protestants have largely ignored Luther's heritage when it comes to thinking about biblical authority and instead have followed Calvin's biblicism, leading to many intellectual and moral problems in the face of a fully historical-critical understanding of the Bible in our time. After prefacing the book with a personal story that illustrates what is at stake in this question for the church's pastoral ministry, he examines in detail the debate between Barth--an heir of Calvin--and Bultmann--a Lutheran--regarding Sachkritik or "content criticism" of Scripture since their debate serves to clarify the central issue facing Protestants today. He then traces their debate back to the Reformation itself to show how the difference between Luther and Calvin presented Protestants from the outset with two conflicting models of biblical authority. He then reflects on how this question of the proper understanding of biblical authority manifests itself in the debates over sexual ethics that have plagued mainline denominations for the past four decades. And he concludes by arguing that Luther's heritage provides Protestants with a viable way to engage in a robust theological interpretation of the Bible that does not violate what historical criticism has taught us about it.

Book excerpt: Using a pragmatic, reader-orientated approach and informed by contemporary theory of metaphor and related topics, Katheryn Darr examines the meaning and functions of child and female imagery for sequential readers of the Isaiah scroll in its entirety. Having identified the associated commonplaces surrounding such tropes--a necessary task if one is to construe the figurative language of another society and culture competently--she turns specifically to rebellious child and personified city (and nation) imagery. The Literary Currents in Biblical Interpretation series explores current trends within the discipline of biblical interpretation by dealing with the literary qualities of the Bible: the play of its language, the coherence of its final form, and the relationships between text and readers. Biblical interpreters are being challenged to take responsibility for the theological, social, and ethical implications of their readings. This series encourages original readings that breach the confines of traditional biblical criticism.

Book excerpt: This book designed to give knowledge is written about Ethiopia, a nation with long time history known as a country of script and museum of history. For many intellectuals history of Ethiopia has become relevant to / cliche' or unique in African history. Materials covered in this book include transference of Ethiopian heritage to young generation, Sheba's and Ark's history, Amharic language and alphabet, information for tourists, and prayer for Ethio-econo-socio-political development. Since faith has power, life for a Christian is easy because God says in Luke 11:9-10: "Ask and it shall be given to you." In the same token if Ethiopians pray according to John 15:16 and John 16:23-24 in the name of Jesus, to believe in the Cross and to unify the country nothing will prevent to transform their lives and to get answer for their prayer. I, Molla born and raised in Ethiopia/Wollo/ Woldia having a Bachelor's degree in history like to make research in my spare time. Whenever; I write I produce original works. I have submitted my writings in 1990, 1991 and 1994 to Institute of Ethiopian Studies, major research institute of Ethiopia. In those days my writings were about mighty conquerors. After I came to America I accepted Jesus as my personal Savior in 1995. Ever since I accepted Jesus, hungry for the Word of God, I jump for the glory of the Lord whenever; worship starts. As a result miracles in my life continue to flow. Now I am a nurse. Before six years prophesy came to me through Pastor Seifu Kebede (Divine Mission Ministry) that I would be author of books. These days I start to write books to show the greatness of God and the weakness of man.
