Book excerpt: New insights into the fission process can be gained by better quantitative knowledge of how the energy released in fission is distributed between the kinetic energy of the two fragments, the excitation energy of the two fragments and the number of neutrons emitted. Studies of prompt gamma-rays emitted in spontaneous fission (SF) with large arrays of Compton suppressed Ge detector arrays are providing new quantitative answers to longstanding questions concerning fission as well as new insights into the structure of neutron-rich nuclei. For the first time the triple gamma coincidence technique was employed in spontaneous fission studies. Studies of SF of 252Cf and 242Pu have been carried out. These [gamma]-[gamma]-[gamma] data provide powerful ways to identify uniquely gamma rays from a particular nucleus in the very complex gamma-ray spectra given off by the over 100 different nuclei produced. The emphasis of this paper is on the first quantitative measurements of the multiplicities of the neutrons emitted in SF and the energy levels populated in the fragments. Indeed, in the break up into Mo-Ba pairs, we have identified for the first time fragments associated with from zero up to ten neutrons emitted and observed the excited energy states populated in these nuclei. The zero neutron emission pairs like 1°4Mo- 148Ba, 1°6Mo- 146Ba and 1°4Zr- 148Ce observed in this work are particularly interesting because they represent a type of cold fission or a new mode of cluster radioactivity as proposed by Greiner, Sandulescu and co-workers. These data provide new insights into the processes of cluster radioactivity and cold fission.

Book excerpt: Nuclear Fission provides a comprehensive account of nuclear fission. This book is organized into 14 chapters. Chapter I introduces and discusses the discovery of fission, followed by a treatment of transition nucleus in Chapters II to VIII. Chapter IX deals with the theories of mass and energy distributions. The kinetic energy release in fission is described in Chapter X, while the distribution of mass and charge in fission is considered in Chapter XI. Chapters XII and XIII consider the emission of neutrons and ? rays from fission. Detailed studies of the ? particles accompanying fission are covered in the last chapter. This volume is intended for students, but is also valuable to research scientists interested in the physics and chemistry of fission.

Book excerpt: This book brings together various aspects of the nuclear fission phenomenon discovered by Hahn, Strassmann and Meitner almost 70 years ago. Beginning with an historical introduction the authors present various models to describe the fission process of hot nuclei as well as the spontaneous fission of cold nuclei and their isomers. The role of transport coefficients, like inertia and friction in fission dynamics is discussed. The effect of the nuclear shell structure on the fission probability and the mass and kinetic energy distributions of the fission fragments is presented. The fusion-fission process leading to the synthesis of new isotopes including super-heavy elements is described. The book will thus be useful for theoretical and experimental physicists, as well as for graduate and PhD students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the time of the discovery of the fission of the nucleus, when Hahn and Strassmann first detected the products of nuclear fission in 1939 in uranium irradiated by neutrons, over two decades have passed. In the work accom plished since that time, research has been greatly expanded on fission products and has been extended to many nuclides formed in the fission of various nu clei induced by neutrons, gamma rays, charged particles, and in spontaneous fission. Amassing of experimental results is an important task not only for nu clear engineering but also for an understanding of the fission process itself, for bringing into existence a finished theory on the unique and intriguing physi cal phenomenon which plays such a decisive role in the practical utilization of nuclear energy. In this reference manual, an attempt is made to collect and generalize upon the results of experimental research work over the period spanning 1939 to 1962, on yields of fission products and on the mass distribution of fission fragments. Various instances of the fission of nuclei induced by neutrons, gamma rays, charged particles, and spontaneous fission of nuclei are discussed.
