Book excerpt: Neuro-Otology: a volume in the Handbook of Clinical Neurology series, provides a comprehensive translational reference on the disorders of the peripheral and central vestibular system. The volume is aimed at serving clinical neurologists who wish to know the most current established information related to dizziness and disequilibrium from a clinical, yet scholarly, perspective. This handbook sets the new standard for comprehensive multi-authored textbooks in the field of neuro-otology. The volume is divided into three sections, including basic aspects, diagnostic and therapeutic management, and neuro-otologic disorders. Internationally acclaimed chapter authors represent a broad spectrum of areas of expertise, chosen for their ability to write clearly and concisely with an eye toward a clinical audience. The Basic Aspects section is brief and covers the material in sufficient depth necessary for understanding later translational and clinical material. The Diagnostic and Therapeutic Management section covers all of the essential topics in the evaluation and treatment of patients with dizziness and disequilibrium. The section on Neuro-otologic Disorders is the largest portion of the volume and addresses every major diagnostic category in the field. Synthesizes widely dispersed information on the anatomy and physiology of neuro-otologic conditions into one comprehensive resource Features input from renowned international authors in basic science, otology, and neuroscience Presents the latest assessment of the techniques needed to diagnose and treat patients with dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance Provides the reader with an updated, in-depth review of the clinically relevant science and the clinical approach to those disorders of the peripheral and central vestibular system

This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hearing is dependent on neural processing of acoustic cues obtained by the left and right ears. Neural signals driven by the two ears are integrated at multiple levels of the central auditory system, which enables animals including humans to perform various functions including localization of a sound source. A natural listening environment typically contains sounds from multiple sources. These sounds can have different spectral and temporal features and occur at either the same or different time. Integration can happen among neural signals elicited by the same or different sounds. The way of integration can greatly affect how individual sounds are sensed and perceived. Functions such as auditory grouping and stream segregation, which are central to establishing coherent auditory images in a complex listening environment, are highly dependent on the way of integration. Binaural hearing is complicated by individual differences and developmental changes in head and pinna shape/size as binaural cues can be affected by these differences and changes. Furthermore, neural processing of binaural cues can be influenced by hearing impairments and the use of hearing aids and cochlear implants. These factors likely require a listener to optimize the use of binaural cues through learning and to use plastic changes in the nervous system to perform the optimization. Great strides have been made in understanding binaural processing in normal and impaired auditory systems. This Research Topic aims to highlight some of the latest findings in the following areas: 1) Animal behavioral and human psychoacoustical studies of binaural hearing; 2) Neural encoding and processing of binaural cues and structural as well as neurophysiological bases of such encoding and processing; 3) Contribution of binaural neural processing to auditory functions such as sound-source localization, binaural fusion, binaural interference, spatial release from masking, auditory grouping, and auditory stream segregation; 4) Computational models of binaural processing; 5) Learning and plastic changes in binaural processing following hearing loss or alterations of acoustic environment and structural as well as physiological bases of these behavioral changes; 6) Clinical aspects of binaural processing including application of processing strategies, including research on the benefits of bilateral cochlear implantation, and the neural correlates thereof

This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olfactory dysfunction, also known as anosmia and hyposmia, is one of the most prevalent (80-90%) symptoms reported by patients with COVID-19. Outside the context of COVID-19, chemosensory dysfunction has been associated with decreased quality of life, anxiety, depression, and cognitive impairment. In the setting of COVID-19, decreased sense of smell has been positively associated with mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. The short-term and long-term neuropsychiatric implications of the olfactory dysfunction related to COVID-19 are still largely unexplored. Investigation of the neuropsychiatric sequelae of olfactory dysfunction related to COVID-19 infection is particularly critical to characterize the pathological effects of COVID-19 on brain function and to develop strategies to improve patient’s quality of life and mental wellbeing. In this Research Topic, Frontiers aims to highlight studies that investigate the neuropsychiatric, psychological, and cognitive consequences of COVID-19-related olfactory dysfunction, present current advances in the field, and anticipate health care needs for the development of therapeutic interventions.

Book excerpt: The term ‘tinnitus’ is searched over 110,000+ times every month. Unfortunately, much of the information readily available through internet searches is inaccurate, whereas most evidence-based information is only available through peer-reviewed journal articles often containing dense scientific jargon. Tinnitus: Advances in Prevention, Assessment, and Management aims to bridge this gap by providing up-to-date and evidence-based information on tinnitus prevention, assessment, and management. Presented in a quick, easy-to-read format, this text offers a practical and handy resource for busy practitioners and health profession students, as well as individuals with bothersome tinnitus. Each section contains short chapters providing accessible overviews of research related to tinnitus and hyperacusis. Section I delves into various approaches for prevention of hearing loss and tinnitus. Section II covers tinnitus assessment, while Section III introduces readers to a range of tinnitus management solutions. Section IV focuses solely on recent advances in assessment and management of hyperacusis and other disorders of decreased sound tolerance. Authors of Section V review recent tinnitus-related developments, including social media use and COVID-19. The final section consists of interesting real-life case studies involving patients with bothersome tinnitus. Key Features: * Interesting real-life tinnitus-related case studies puts new research into context * More than 50 illustrations and tables help clarify and expand on key concepts covered throughout the text, enabling clinicians and students to more easily understand and apply complex material * Each chapter opens with a brief introduction and background on a tinnitus-related topic, followed by up-to-date, evidence-based, peer-reviewed research on the topic * All chapters contain ideas for future research on the topic as well as clinical implications of the research * Chapters end with key messages and references for further review of the topic * Audio samples included for Chapter 20

Book excerpt: Executive functions develop during the first years of life and determine future learning and personal development. Executive dysfunction is related to various neurodevelopmental disorders, so its study is of great interest for intervention in children with neurotypical development and in those who have suffered a neurodevelopmental disorder. The Handbook of Research on Neurocognitive Development of Executive Functions and Implications for Intervention offers updated research on executive functions and their implication in psychoeducational intervention. It establishes a multidisciplinary context to discuss both intervention experience and research results in different areas of knowledge. Covering topics such as childhood inhibitory processing, mindfulness interventions, and language development, this major reference work is an excellent resource for psychologists, medical professionals, researchers, academicians, educators, and students.
