Book excerpt: Even though ESP is not a new phenomenon in Indonesia, many teachers still face a lot of challenges in real classroom implementation and practices. Many scholars also have claimed that ESP is a part of ELT like General English (GE). Both have something in common but to some extent they also have differences. Therefore, the ESP pedagogy and approaches should also be treated differently from the pedagogy of other ELT types such as GE. This book hopefully provides some insight to teachers who need to shift between GE and ESP. The ideas of ESP are mostly derived from the research project conducted by the English Language Education Department under the supervision of Dwi Poedjiastutie and Laela Hikmah Nurbatra. These researches mainly focus on ESP teaching at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang under the auspice of the Language Centre. The research selected for this book covered a different range of ESP topics. In the first chapter of the book, the Poedjiastutie discusses the ESP teacher recruitment process at one of the universities in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the countries that had also been developing ESP projects in vocational schools, academies and universities. Many teachers of EFL make the transition to teach ESP because the number of students who need ESP learning is increasing from year to year. The curriculum and the pedagogy of the teaching institution need to adapt to the situation. When the curriculum fails to identify the need and the demand of ESP in this university, the ESP system needs serious attention since teachers is a central role in the education system.

Book excerpt: Associated with an important epistemological shift from language proficiency to language criticality in applied linguistic research, this book provides a sociological perspective on foreign language education in Japan. By employing ethnographic methods to investigate the relationship between three core analytical elements – foreign language education geared towards the development of learners’ intercultural communicative competence; nihonjinron and native-speakerism as potentially constraining ideological forces; and EFL practices observed at four Japanese junior high schools – the author not only shares valuable insights into how English is taught and learned in a stratum of the Japanese EFL system which has received limited attention from researchers over the years, but also clarifies the fundamental and complex changes currently taking place in the Japanese EFL landscape. This multi-faceted book also calls for greater consideration in postmodern ideology critique for the stratified nature of social processes as well as the material conditions and underlying generative mechanisms involved in the production and consumption of (including resistance to) ideological discourse. Accordingly, it outlines several challenges shaping ideology research in educational settings, and responds by developing a realist-oriented theoretical and methodological approach to address these challenges. This book serves as a unique point of reference for the study of parallel nationalist discourses embedded in foreign language education systems around the world.

Book excerpt: The Italian diaspora throughout the world navigate and negotiate various complex and multidirectional language dynamics. In order to account for the sociolinguistic processes that have taken place, this book provides a detailed observation of these linguistic dynamics from the point of view of the Italian diaspora in Bedford, in the UK. This study on the language behaviour of three generations of Italian residents in Bedford provides empirical data on, and highlights the importance of, the sociolinguistic examination of English in service encounters. What comes to light in most of the cases analysed, is that audience design has a proven influence on the choice of language and repertoire within the speech of the Bedford Italian community. There are not only switches from one language to another, but also style shifts in the linguistic repertoire. Throughout this study, it becomes clear that speakers freely use the two languages available to their speech community, and, thanks to their active and passive repertoire, they apply a range of linguistic resources from both Italian and English. The volume also uncovers some especially interesting traits in 3rd generation speech, involving in particular a rather widespread use of mixed pronunciation. Upon moving past the initial assumption that the adoption of this mixed pronunciation is used to show the younger generation’s sense of belonging to the BI community, a quite different reason emerges. Closer analysis reveals that, due to an increasing feeling of ‘non-Britishness’, this linguistic choice may be linked to a deliberate and conscious attempt on their part not to accommodate to British culture, and in so doing to distance themselves further from it. Preface by David Britain.
