Book excerpt: An exclusive look at one of the world's most successful and controversial companies, and the mysterious family behind it. BMW is arguably the most admired carmaker in the world. It's financial performance is the envy of its competitors, and BMW products inspire near-fanatical loyalty. While many carmakers struggle with falling sales, profits and market share, demand for BMWs continues to grow, frequently outpacing production. Now, David Kiley-Detroit Bureau Chief at USA Today and author of Getting the Bugs Out, which covered Volkswagen's demise and rebirth, goes inside the fabled German automaker to see how it does what it does so well. With unprecedented access to BMW executives, Kiley goes behind the walls of BMW's famed "Four Cylinders" headquarters in Munich at a time when the company is in its most aggressive, and some say riskiest, expansion in its history and when some of the company's new products, like the 7 Series sedan and Z4 roadster, are for the first time drawing as many barbs from critics as bouquets. Kiley covers intimate details of the boardroom drama surrounding the company's nearly disastrous acquisition and subsequent sale of the British Rover Group and its expansion into selling MINI and Rolls Royce cars. Besides being a world-class carmaker, BMW is also considered one of the smartest consumer marketing companies and Kiley explores the extraordinary value and management of the BMW brand mystique. He also takes a revealing look at the mysterious and ultra-private Quandt family of Bad Homburg Germany, which owns a controlling stake in BMW: Johanna and Susanne Quandt, two of the wealthiest women in Europe and Stefan Quandt, one of the wealthiest bachelors on the continent. David Kiley (Ann Arbor, MI) is the Detroit Bureau Chief at USA Today who has covered the auto industry for 17 years. He has been featured on Nightline, CNBC, CNN, MSNBC, NPR and the Today show. He is also the author of Getting the Bugs Out: The Rise, Fall, and Comeback of Volkswagen in America (0-471-26304-4), also available from Wiley.

Book excerpt: Zaha Hadid's highly inventive and seemingly unbuildable designs have defied conventional ideas of architectural space and construction. The BMW Central Building in Leipzig, Germany, is no exception. It is the heart of the BMW factory complexthe dynamic focal point of the entire plant that visually, physically, and experientially sustains a sense of animation and motion. With an audacious and abstracted geometry of forms and lines, the BMW Central Building challenges the notion of building as static and is definitive evidence of architecture as art. Zaha Hadid: BMW Central Building, the seventh volume in the Source Books in Architecture series, provides a comprehensive look at this instant modern masterpiece.

Alison Hammond, of "Big Brother" fame, goes inside BMW's factory in Oxford to provide a lively guide to the production process for its new mini. Production planning: First comes production planning. Customers' orders are analysed by a program called "Kiss" - this is vital to meet buyers' special requirements. Stage two is "Body in White" - 228 robots weld the basic framework together. Quality control: Quality control is essential. The main aim is to spot any problems before the car is painted and finished. Painting each Mini takes 10 hours including the pre-treatment, electro painting, and drying time. Just in time: Parts come from all over the world. They're ordered on just in time principles, to minimise on storage space and costs. Stage four is the final assembly of the car. Team-working is an essential part of the production process. Health and safety of workers is a major concern. But what about the health of the planet - do we really need lots more cars on our roads?

Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The story of the automobile manufacturer production can not be told without the story of Henry Ford, who was one of the pioneers constructing his first horseless carriage in 1896. He incorporated the Ford Motor Company in 1903, proclaiming I will build a car for the great multitude . As predicted he did so in 1908 offering a Model T for $ 950. This model heralds the beginning of the motor age. The car evolved from a former luxury item for the well-to-do to essential transportation for the ordinary man. Ford also revolutionized automobile manufacturing, in 1914 the Ford plant used innovation production techniques and was able to turn out a complete chassis every 95 minutes. That was a revolution in the automobile manufacturing at the time, because the former production time took about 730 minutes to turn out a complete chassis! Ford achieved that fast production time by using a constantly moving assembly line, subdivision of labor, careful coordination of operations and he began to pay nearly double the wages offered by their competitors. His innovations made him an international celebrity in the industrial revolution and he was one of the first who thought about effective organization to achieve a higher productivity. Ford s methods that changed the automobile production were perhaps not mainly the introduction of the assembly line, his goal was also to constantly standardizing the use of craftsmen. That firstly resulted in a high product variety despite in fact that they had been made using the same drawing. Secondly a lot of time was spent in fitting the parts together. These facts influenced major loss in productivity and under such circumstances a real mass-production was not possible. But by standardizing components and developing work routines was the first scope for an assembly line approach. The target of our case study is to present and analyze the changes in companies organizations, applied to the example of BMW. The opening part will summarize the history of the working and organizing techniques in general. The middle part will focus on the changes in production organization in the automotive industry, followed by the last part analyzing new strategies in Sales & Marketing regarding the rebirth of MINI by the BMW Group. Zusammenfassung: Die vorliegende englischsprachige Projektarbeit behandelt das Thema effektive Reorganisation in Produktion, Vertrieb und Marketing in der Automobilindustrie am [...]
