Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Transformation So many great names are enshrined in the literature of Insect Transformation, that the publication of a new book on the familiar theme may appear hazardous if not presumptuous. And as with lapse of time the literature accumulates, a well-balanced treatment of the subject becomes increasingly difficult. In this - volume designed to serve as an introduction to the study of growth and change in the life of insects - the author has sought, while re-telling many well-known stories, to call attention to some structural details that have hitherto escaped mention in text-books, and to discuss the relation of such details to the wider problems of insect life-histories. He ventures, therefore, to hope that the book may be of some service to serious workers in entomology as well as to beginners. Descriptions of the form of adult insects are given only in so far as is necessary to elucidate the structure of larvae, pupae, and immature stages generally. No attempt has been made to compile a bibliography, but references are given to books and papers to which the writer is indebted, and full lists of titles are to be found in many of these. Especial acknowledgment is due to the writings of A. S. Packard, L. C. Miall, L. F. Henneguy, J. H. Comstock and R. J. Tillyard. The source of every borrowed illustration is indicated in its title, and the thanks of the author and publishers are rendered to the United States Department of Agriculture, the Cambridge University Press, and the Royal Dublin Society, for the loan of blocks. The Cambridge Press has generously allowed the use of several figures from the author's "Lifestory of Insects," and from Dr. Tillyard's "Biology of Dragon-flies," while Prof. J. H. Comstock has kindly granted the use of illustrations from "The Wings of Insects," and from his lately-published "Introduction to Entomology." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects at Home: Being a Popular Account of All Those Insects Which Are Useful or Destructive, and Minutely Describing Their Structure, Habits, and Transformations In the Woodcuts which are inserted in the text the num bered figures represent insects, and those to which letters are attached represent the most important details of those insects. It is by means of such details that entomologists are enabled to arrange insects in some definite system, and so to enable anyone who is acquainted with them to identify an insect which he has never before seen. The reader may probably notice that these figures of insects are but slightly shaded, and in many cases are little but outline. This is intentional, and the shading is omitted in order that the reader may supply its place by colour. In every case where red, yellow, or light hues of any tint are to be used, their place is left as nearly blank as possible; and, as the insects are described fully in the text, there will be no difficulty in applying the colours. I would recommend a liberal use of ox-gall in mixing the colours, so as to neutralise the oily lines of the printer's ink. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Transformations It was universally believed by the ancient philosophers, that maggots, flies, and other insects were generated from putrefying substances. This opinion continues to be held by uninformed persons among ourselves; - though it would be equally correct to maintain, that a flight of vultures had been generated by the dead carcass which they may be seen devouring, or a flock of sheep from the grass-field in which they graze. Another opinion, perhaps still more generally diffused, is, that caterpillars, aphides, and other garden insects which destroy the leaves of plants, are generated, propagated, or, at least, spread about, by certain winds or states of the air, mysteriously and indefinitely termed blight. The latter belief is, probably, not so easy of immediate refutation as the former; - but, as we shall endeavour to show, it seems to us to be equally erroneous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life-Story of Insects Among the manifold operations of living creatures few have more strongly impressed the casual observer or more deeply interested the thoughtful student than the transformations of insects. The schoolboy watches the tiny green caterpillars hatched from eggs laid on a cabbage leaf by the common white butterfly, or maybe rears successfully a batch of silkworms through the changes and chances of their lives, while the naturalist questions yet again the how and 'why of these common though wondrous life-stories, as he seeks to trace their course more fully than his predecessors knew. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Transformations (or Metamorphoses) Of Insects, (Insecta, Myriapoda, Arachnida, and Crustacea): Being an Adaptation, for English Readers, of M. Emile Blanchard's "Metamorphoses, Moeurs Et Instincts Des Insects"; And a Compilation From the Works of Newport, Charles Darwin, and Others The articulate animals comprise those which the great Linnaeus called insects -that is to say, the true insects, the hundred-legs, the spiders, and the crabs. Insects existed in very remote geological ages, and their wings have been found beautifully preserved in the remains of those old forests and swamps which have been formed into coal. Thus early in the world's history the beetle droned at eventide, and the merry chirp of the grasshopper was added to the song of Nature. Moreover, the hundred-legs of the period enjoyed the quietude of the great tree stems, and many a spider spread its web on the ferns and the close underwood. Coal is dug up from depths of hundreds of fathoms, and is covered by sediments which are the remains of old continents, and sea bottoms, the thickness of which is a measure of the time they took to form; yet so far back in the annals of Nature the tiny insects came from the egg, lived as gormandising grubs, changed into sleepy pupae, and burst forth into lively winged creatures. Ever since, and during all the successive changes of the world's surface, insect life has manifested itself, and now articulate animals are found everywhere. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Histories of Indian Insects, Vol. 5: Lepidoptera (Butterflies) The insects, the life-histories of which are described in this volume, are representatives of the principal families of that interesting group of insects, the Butterflies. With the exception of one (delias) the others are pests of more or less economic import ance, occurring on trees and plants either cultivated or grown for the garden. All are of interest and importance in that they are probably the first to attract the attention of the beginner in Ento mology, especially Economic Entomology. Also they occur so constantly and are so common that in all their stages, they ftc quently come under the notice of even the common people, but for want of a proper knowledge and observation ordinary people fail to see the connection between the caterpillar which eats the leaves, the dormant pupa and the butterfly which incessantly flies about under trees, over bushes and plants and not infrequently in houses or even over one's head. The hanging Nymphalid, Papilionid and Pierid pupae are frequently mistaken for fruits by many. For the progress of Economic Entomology in India it is essential that the people should become familiar with the insects and especially with their life-history. The greatest bar to progress in checking injurious insects here is the fact that a mysterious origin is usually assigned to them, simply because the elementary and essential facts of insect transformations are not known to those who suffer from the depre.
