Download or read book Iranian Entomology - An Introduction written by Cyrus Abivardi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-07-03 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major work presents the first comprehensive survey on entomological studies in Iran from prehistoric periods up to modern times. This concise collection and excerpts from the literature are complemented by over 130 color figures of superb quality showing insects and their habitats. Volume 1 Faunal Studies concentrates on the systematic taxonomy of Iranian insects. It also lists all members of Rhopalocera (butterflies) and four families of Heterocera (moths). An introductory chapter is reserved for basic information on the geography, vegetation and climate of Iran. Volume 2 Applied Entomology starts with a chapter on the history of entomology in Iran until current times. Several chapters cover agricultural aspects of entomology, such as destructive insects, biological control or cultivars exhibiting resistance to insect pests. Other chapters are on medical entomology, e.g. mosquito-, sandfly- or flea-borne diseases and human myiasis.
Book Synopsis Ecology and Biogeography of High Altitude Insects by : M.S. Mani
Download or read book Ecology and Biogeography of High Altitude Insects written by M.S. Mani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my book Introduction to High Altitude Entomology, published in 1962, I summa rized the results of eight years' studies, mainly on the Himalaya. I have since then had the opportunity of studying the collections of high altitude insects from the Alps, Carpathians, Caucasus, Urals, Alai-Pamirs, Tien Shan, Altai and other im portant mountains of the world in different museums and institutions in Europe. Through the courtesy and generosity of the Academy of Sciences of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, I was also able to personally collect insects and make valuable field observations on the Caucasus, the Alai-Pamirs, Ala-Tau and the Tien Shan mountains. Through comparative studies I have tried to synthesize the fundamental principles of high altitude entomology. I have described here the distinctive characters of the high altitude environment, the ecological specializations of the high altitude insects, their ecological inter relations and the outstanding peculiarities of their biogeography. I have also pre sented here an outline of the high altitude entomology of the principal mountains of the world, with brief accounts of their orogeny, geology and vegetation. This book differs from all other contributions in the field in its comparative ecological approach and in the fact that the main emphasis is throughout on the evolution of the high altitude ecosystem as an integral part of the orogeny. High mountains are, in all parts of the world, important and independent centres of origin and differ entiation of distinctive and highly specialized ecosystems and faunas.

Book Synopsis Culture and Customs of Afghanistan by : Hafizullah Emadi
Download or read book Culture and Customs of Afghanistan written by Hafizullah Emadi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Afghanistan has been at the crossroads of many cultures and civilizations, occupying a unique place in the cultural geography of Central Asia. Invading tribes and armies passed through ancient Afghanistan and left their imprint on the culture, customs, and way of life there. In recent history, Afghanistan has been the focus of international attention since the Soviet invasion and occupation of 1979-1989, the brutal civil war that ensued, and the subsequent U.S. invasion to topple the Taliban regime. As the country struggles to stabilize and rebuild, this volume is the first to reveal the people and ways of life that have been in flux for so long. Emadi brings an insider's knowledge and authority to the accessible narrative. Students and general readers will find a clear explanation of the land, people, economy, social stratification, and history as context for the chapters that follow. In the chapter on Religion and Religious Thought, the predominant Islamic religion is largely intertwined with political events that have brought Afghanistan such attention. The lesser-known literature and the arts are brought to light next. A strong Architecture, Housing, and Settlements chapter highlights many styles unfamiliar to most Westerners. Coverage of Afghan cooking and cuisine brings a more intimate understanding of the culture. The chapter on Family, Women, and Gender will draw readers in with its survey of how the family works, what is expected of women, and what courtship, marriage, childrearing, and education are like today. A standout of the Festivals and Leisure Activities chapter is the vivid rendering of the sport called Buzkashi, where men on horseback vie to move an animal carcass across a field to a goal. A final chapter on Lifestyles, Media, and Education describes the urban vs. rural lifestyles, the state of communications, and the prospects for schooling post Taliban. A country map, glossary, resource guide, and photos complement the text.

From the Czarist Russia’s march south in the 19th Century threatening British India, three Anglo-Afghan Wars, the Soviet Invasion and occupation of Afghanistan starting in December 1979 and the resulting anti-Soviet Jihad by the Afghan Mujahideen to Kabul’s and their allies’ (U.S. and NATO) conflict with the Taliban, Afghanistan has been one of the centers of important international and regional conflicts and events. Historical Dictionary of Afghanistan, Fifth Edition contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 1,000 cross-referenced entries on important personalities as well as aspects of the country’s politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Afghanistan.
