Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book seeks to fulfil the need for a concise and inexpensive text on population ecology. It presents general principles derived from demographic studies of insects in various parts, of the world, and shows how those principles bear upon the practice of ecology both in research and in the management of biological resources. The book is aimed at a wide audience including students and teachers of ecology, and economic entomologists. After reviewing the develpment of ecological thought since Darwin, the authors discuss the views advanced by modern theorists to explain how animal numbers are determined, and describe a comprehensive and functional way of envisaging the dynamics of insect populations, suited to the problems confronting most ecologists today and to modern methods of work. The authors show how their generalised model can serve for the derivation of explanatory synthesis of population dynamics in a number of cases ranging from investigations pursued under laboratory conditions to large-scale field studies. Recognised approaches to the study of numerical determination in insect populations are presented synoptically according to the characteristics of the information sought. In addition, the authors present a comprehensive discussion of pest control, in which they test the practical efficacy of their views and analyse the relation of demographic ecology to the management of pests. The book is concluded by outlining the ecological research needed to advance our understanding of insect behavior." BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents comprehensive information on various aspects of ecology with special reference to insects, to form a platform to design an ecologically sound insect pest management. Insects are the most dominant and diverse group of living organism on earth. Owing to their smaller size, smaller space and food requirements, more number of generation per unit time, insects serves as one of the best subject matter for studies on various ecological aspects such as chemical ecology, population dynamics, predator/parasitoid-prey interactions etc. The knowledge on various aspects of insect ecology helps in formulating an effective environmentally benign insect pest management. This book is of interest and use to the post graduate students and researchers working on various aspects of insect ecology with special emphasis on population dynamics, chemical ecology, tri tropic interactions, ecological engineering and Ecological Insect pest management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects, when studied from the ecological perspective, provide a great opportunity for scientific studies emphasizing population theory. The simple fact of being successful organisms for their ability to colonize different habitats or even for their high reproductive potential, increases the interest of ecologists in conducting studies focused on population and community level. Mathematical models are powerful tools that can capture the essence of many biological systems and investigate ecological patterns associated to ecological stability dependent on endogenous and exogenous factors. This proposal comes from the idea of adding experiences of researchers interested in working at the interface between mathematical and computation theory and problems centered on entomology, showing how mathematical modelling can be an important tool for understanding population dynamics, behavior, pest management, spatial structure and conservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a team of leading international specialists, Behavioral Ecology of Insect Parasitoids examines the optimal behaviors that parasitoids exhibit in order to maximize long term offspring production. It is an essential reference for research scientists and students studying these fascinating insects or for anyone involved in using parasitoids in biological control programs. Reviews topical issues, including cutting edge research on parasitoid decision making and the implications for biological control Explores applications in other fields, provides information on the latest research methods, and includes helpful case studies and statistical tools Creates a deeper understanding of the link between behavioural strategies and host mortality, resulting in more efficient selective pest management programs “Overall, this is a fascinating volume that provides a significant contribution to the literature on parasitoid insects. It goes a long way toward providing insights into numerous aspects of parasitoid behavior and will stimulate a diversity of future projects, something that should be the goal of any such text. I highly recommend Wajnberg et al. for all of those working on the biology or evolution of parasitoids.” Palaios 2009
