Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Behaviour as a Factor in Applied Entomology The realization that in the ultimate control of the gipsy moth in North America, the silvicultural aspect of the problem must receive serious consideration is an indication of the importance of chemo tropism in the control of this pest. The elimination of favored food plants and the substitution of unfavored species such as pine are meas ures largely based on the principle of food attraction, that is, of chemo tropism, and should be so regarded. Enticing and suggestive as the subject of chemotropism has been shown to be, we must pass on to the next tropic reaction, namely, thermotropism. In temperature we encounter an environmental influence which is as far-reaching as it is universal in its relation to insect behaviour, and while it is inseparably associated with other factors, especially that of moisture which we shall consider later, it is in itself sufficiently potent to determine the range of insect activity in both time and space. The relation of temperature to the distribution of insects is too well known to require demonstration by examples. Merriam's laws of temperature control, namely: (1) that animals and plants are restricted in northward distribution by the total quantity of heat during the season of growth and reproduction, and (2) that animals and plants are restricted in southward distribution by the mean temperature of a brief period during the hottest part of the year, in general, hold true in regard to insect distribution. The importance of determining the optimum temperatures for the repro duction and development of different insects has been realized by a number of investigators, although their conclusions have sometimes been defective through neglect to take into consideration the coopera tive effect of other environmental factors such as humidity. The influence of temperature on development is illustrated very strikingly in the Aphides. For example, Ewing has recently found that a con stant temperature of 90° F. Is sufficient to prevent completely the development of A phis avenaz and that the optimum temperature for the production of Wingless agamic forms of this species is about 65° F these forms only being produced at a mean average daily temperature of about 65° F. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of writing this book has been to provide an account of the principles of insect behaviour for the post graduate students of Entomology and general Zoology of all the Universities and Research Institutions as well as to the research scholars engaged in the study of different aspects of Insect behaviour. It is also useful to general readers who have basic knowledge of Biology and have curiosity to know why the insects are vividly coloured, have peculiar shapes, produce sound and light; how they communicate and why bees and wasps sting when disturbed. Significance of insects in pollination of plants associated with the production of seeds, gains and fruits, the role of hormones, pheromones and other chemicals controlling various vital events of the insect behaviour has also been described. The importance of insect migration, control of insect pests by behavioural means has also been discussed. Thus, this book deals with almost all major aspects of insect behaviour. It is hoped that this book will be useful not only to the students of Entomology-Zoology and research scholars of insect behaviour, but also to naturalists who wish to know about some of the mysteries of these small creatures and their lifestyle.

Book excerpt: Interest in insect behavior is growing rapidly, as reflected both in courses devoted fully to the topic and in its inclusion in general biology, ecology, invertebrate zoology, and animal behavior--as well as general entomology--curricula. Instructors and students find that insects are in many ways uniquely suitable animals for behavioral study: the

Studying these systems provides insights into a wide range of ecological, evolutionary, and behavioral questions including the genetics of behavior, phenotypic plasticity, chemical communication, and the evolution of life-history traits. This accessible text offers a new approach that provides the reader with the necessary theoretical and conceptual foundations, at different hierarchical levels, to understand insect behavior. The book is divided into three main sections: mechanisms, ecological and evolutionary consequences, and applied issues. The final section places the preceding chapters within a framework of current threats to human survival - climate change, disease, and food security - before providing suggestions and insights as to how we can utilize an understanding of insect behavior to control and/or ameliorate them. Each chapter provides a concise, authoritative review of the conceptual, theoretical, and methodological foundations of each topic.

Book excerpt: This volume has come about as a direct result of a Symposium entitled "Experimental Analysis of Insect Behaviour" which was an important con tribution to the 14 International Congress of Entomology held in Canberra, Australia, in August 1972 under the joint sponsorship of the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Entomological Society. It is not, however, strictly Symposium proceedings. I have included, in this volume contributions from several workers who had to withdraw from the Symposium at a fairly late stage. Furthermore, quite intentionally, a number of the contributions bear only a general relationship to the papers given at the Congress. To permit this; the deadline for contribu tions was set at some six months after the Symposium. I imposed no restrictions on the form of the contributions. I did, however, indicate that speculative reviews highlighting the author's own recent research or that of his immediate colleagues would be particularly acceptable, and a number of the contributors have taken the opportunity to write this kind of paper. Several contributors, notably those whose task it was to give more general papers in the Symposium itself, have written reviews of somewhat greater scope.
