Book Synopsis Sigiriya and Its Significance by : Rajendra Henapala De Silva
Download or read book Sigiriya and Its Significance written by Rajendra Henapala De Silva and published by Brecourt Academic. This book was released on 2002 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monumental complex of Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is located in the central province of Sri Lanka and traditionally has been deemed to be the capital and site of the palace of Kassapa I, 5th-6th century AD. Drawing on archaeological, literary, religious and cultural evidence from Sigiriya, and from Sri Lanka and India in general, Raja de Silva presents a brand new theory on the identity and function of the site. Casting doubt on earlier interpretations of the site as a palace or fortress, he suggests that Sigiriya was never the abode of a God King', but was a long-standing monastery built several centuries before the time of Kassapa. The paintings for which Sigiriya has long been famous are reinterpreted, not as ladies from Kassapa's court, but as representations of Tara, the most important goddess in Mahayana Buddhism to whom the building was dedicated.

Book Synopsis On Charisma and Institution Building by : Max Weber
Download or read book On Charisma and Institution Building written by Max Weber and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1968-12-15 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection from Max Weber's writings presents his variegated work from one central focus, the relationship between charisma on the one hand, and the process of institution building in the major fields of the social order such as politics, law, economy, and culture and religion on the other. That the concept of charisma is crucially important for understanding the processes of institution building is implicit in Weber's own writings, and the explication of this relationship is perhaps the most important challenge which Weber's work poses for modern sociology. Max Weber on Charisma and Institution Building is a volume in "The Heritage of Sociology," a series edited by Morris Janowitz. Other volumes deal with the writings of George Herbert Mead, William F. Ogburn, Louis Wirth, W. I. Thomas, Robert E. Park, and the Scottish Moralists—Adam Smith, David Hume, Adam Ferguson, and others.
Book Synopsis Rhetoric before and beyond the Greeks by : Carol S. Lipson
Download or read book Rhetoric before and beyond the Greeks written by Carol S. Lipson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on ancient rhetoric outside of the dominant Western tradition, this collection examines rhetorical practices in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Israel, and China. The book uncovers alternate ways of understanding human behavior and explores how these rhetorical practices both reflected and influenced their cultures. The essays address issues of historiography and raise questions about the application of Western rhetorical concepts to these very different ancient cultures. A chapter on suggestions for teaching each of these ancient rhetorics is included.
Download or read book Asian Encounters written by Upinder Singh and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The centuries-old interactions between the different regions of Asia took various forms including the migration of people, trade in raw materials and goods, and the exchange of religious, literary, and aesthetic ideas and forms. Covering diverse aspects of these interactions, this volume studies the connections between India and other parts of Asia including China and Southeast Asia. It, therefore, approaches the subject of Asian cultural interactions during the pre-modern and early modern periods through the prism of politics, art, religion, and trade. By bringing together these inter-related aspects of cultural encounters, it explores the complex connected histories of the Asian people in a comprehensive manner. The diversities of cultural interactions addressed in this book range from issues of war and diplomacy to trade, trade routes and ship-wrecks; from the making of grand monumental edifices to the circulation of tiny terracottas and coveted carpets, and from the religious to the secular domains in the exchange of cultural ideas and forms. Crucial for a comprehensive understanding of contemporary networks between the Indian subcontinent and various other parts of Asia, this work shows that interactions across cultures in pre-modern Asia were motivated not only by commercial but also cultural ties and explores the historical context in which they took place.

Book excerpt: An examination of theoretical and empirical directions in leadership in business, industry, and government, this collection of symposium papers presents a view of the much-discussed but little-researched charismatic leadership notion. Four major divisions include discussion and summary integrating material, thus providing review, evaluation, and perspective on leadership, along with critiques advanced by participants. A final section presents an overview of the sharpeners and levelers those approaches seen as productive in new directions and those seen as probable dead ends in terms of advancing the field. Contributors include Kathryn M. Bartol, D. Anthony Butterfield, John P. Campbell, Fred Dansereau, Jr., McDonald Dumas, Martin G. Evans, William M. Fox, Robert J. House, Charles N. Greene, Steven Kerr, Arlyn J. Melcher, Marshall Sashkin, Chester A. Schriesheim, William E. Scott, Jr., Henry P. Sims, Jr., John E. Stinson, Peter M. Storm, Andrew D. Szilagyi, and William M. Vicars. This book is Volume 4 of the Southern Illinois University Leadership biennial symposia series initiated in 1971. "
