Book excerpt: With energy consumption set to become one of the biggest issues in the daily lives of householders around the world, this book could not be more relevant – despite the fact that it focuses on India. Pachauri adopts a socio-economic approach to analyzing the energy system and energy consumption in India from a household perspective. The work also incorporates two crucial aspects often ignored: namely, the importance of non-commercial sources of energy, and diversity in the patterns of energy usage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is an attempt to analyze changing energy intensities in the Indian economy. The hybrid I-O model at constant prices has been used to address the problem of homogenous pricing of energy inputs across sectors of the economy. Results reveal that the indirect rather than direct energy use is an important source of energy consumption. In such scenario, conservation measures should be pegged in upstream suppliers through technological improvements, fuel substitution or input replacements. Finally, the paper argues that improvements in energy efficiency in the production chains are likely to be more effective than changes within the production process.

Book excerpt: This paper highlights the increasing significance of energy in the Indian economy. The analysis is based on changing dynamics of the supply-and-use relationships among various sectors of the economy. It is observed that energy is an increasingly important input to Indian manufacturing. Since energy is used both as an input as well as for final consumption as a fuel or power, its linkages with the overall economy attain special significance for a growing economy. Over the period, specific energy sub-sectors have intensified their relationship as an input to the economy. Similarly, some energy sub-sectors have maintained a strong relationship with the overall economy as they induce output requirements from other sectors. Thus, the sector calls for policy attention in terms of addressing issues related to raw material availability and adequate infrastructure such as ports, pipelines and transmission. In addition, technology improvement can help to address the impediments on capacity utilization and energy efficiency of the using sectors.

The book has been fully revised and updated to reflect important developments in the field since its original publication. New topics covered include SAMs (and extended input-output models) and their connection to input-output data, structural decomposition analysis (SDA), multiplier decompositions, identifying important coefficients, and international input-output models. A major new feature of this edition is that it is also supported by an accompanying website with solutions to all problems, wide-ranging real-world data sets, and appendices with further information for more advanced readers. Input-Output Analysis is an ideal introduction to the subject for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in a wide variety of fields, including economics, regional science, regional economics, city, regional and urban planning, environmental planning, public policy analysis and public management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fresh perspective on the ever-growing relevance of input-output analysis in problem solving. It is based on the “19th National Conference of the Input-Output Research Association of India (IORA)”, held in 2017 in Mumbai, India. The conference promoted the exchange of ideas on input-output analysis and related methods among economists, government officials, policymakers, academicians and industrialists. The book captures the unique ideas of prominent scholars, extends the basic “input-output framework,” analytical tool, outlines the possible impacts of some major policy decisions adopted by the Government of India, and puts forward concrete policy suggestions. In addition, it highlights the versatility of the Leontief model, which is currently being extended to cover a diverse spectrum of policy issues, ranging from agricultural productivity to science and technology and from carbon hotspots to energy and environmental consequences. A perfect blend of theory and application, the book provides a realistic outlook on sensitive economies and interdependencies between sectors.

Results of a structural decomposition analysis in a constant price hybrid Input-Output framework underscore contribution of the final demand shifts as a significant factor impacting the energy use. Nevertheless, changes over time in production technology exhibit tremendous conservation potential. The paper notes that technology improvement occurs gradually and the effect is profound over the long term. Further, the results validate the extent of output leakage in the energy sector thus highlighting domestic supply constraints. A high ratio of India's energy imports-to-energy embedded in exports is observed which has implications from an environment perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing demand for energy from its fast growing economy notwithstanding, India is committed to reduce energy consumption on account of the concerns for climate change. It is often held that growth in energy demand could be moderated through autonomous changes in production technology. This paper analyses the sector-wise changes in production technology and its effect on the demand for direct and embodied energy by using structural decomposition analysis in a constant price hybrid Input-Output framework. Results support the hypothesis that changes in production technology contribute significantly to reduce additional energy requirements of the economy. The differences in magnitude, direction and rate of change in production technology between energy and non-energy inputs highlight their varying contributions to energy savings. The significant efficiency impact of embodied consumption in non-energy sectors highlights the scope of technological changes in these sectors, which has a cascading effect in the production chain. Therefore, the focus of policies shall be on lowering the consumption of embodied energy.

Book excerpt: Energy and food are the major concerns of most of the developing countries including India, because most of its population (57%) depends on agriculture, which contributes 14.5 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country in 2010-11 (Economic Survey 2011-12). India has made a considerable progress in increasing agricultural production and productivity due to the introduction of high yielding varieties, intensive cropping system and increased usage of energy sources like chemicals, fertilizers and high level of mechanization. Agriculture today demands a lot of fossil fuels due to its intensification and market orientation. It demands energy not only directly for its operations but also indirectly for the manufacture of inputs like fertilizers, pesticides and machinery and implements. The productivity of farms depends greatly on the availability and judicious use of farm power by the farmers. Agricultural implements and machines enable the farmers to employ the power judiciously for production purposes. Agricultural machines increase productivity of land and labour by meeting timeliness of farm operations and increase work output per unit time. Besides, its paramount contribution to the multiple cropping and diversification of agriculture, mechanization also enables efficient utilization of inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and irrigation water. Energy consumption is a engine of economic growth in Indian agriculture many energy policies and inventions in India are designed for the needs of industry, transport and urban infrastructure, whilst agricultural energy requirements are frequently overlooked. Although agriculture contributes significantly to economic and social development, energy provision in agriculture has not received the attention the sector deserves. Energy for agriculture needs to have a higher priority in rural policy and technology assessment work in India.

Furthermore, they address the derivation of input-output coefficients for the purpose of economic and environmental modeling, the building of applied general equilibrium models, the use of these models for efficiency analysis, and the extensions to stochastic and dynamic input-output analysis. As well as revealing and exploring the theoretical foundations, the Handbook also acts as a useful guide for practitioners.

Book excerpt: Increasing interaction between economic growth and its environmental implications requires a more focused study of energy linkages. This paper is an attempt to trace changing energy linkages in an I-O framework using widely accepted concepts of backward and forward linkages. It differs from impact analysis that has final demand of a sector as its initial point of investigation. The analysis is an attempt to highlight growing importance of energy through study of changing supply-and-use relationships among sectors, which is the subject of this paper.Energy sector is now the centre stage of economic activity due its deeper inter-linkages with the economy. It has both the characteristics of a key sector -- stimulating for the economy as well as sensitive to changes in the economy. It is a catalyst for the Indian economy since an increase in energy final demand would stimulate production in other sectors, and growth in rest of the economy may increase the demand for energy output. India's energy characteristics have changed both in terms of pattern as well as degree of interdependence. The paper concludes that India's Energy Hallmark has changed. It identifies energy as a key sector forthrightly calling for attention in future policy formulations.
