Peaceful canals, bustling rivers, glorious lakes - there is something for everyone. This book will tell the reader all they need to know about how to get afloat - which boat to choose, whether to hire or buy, how much it will cost, and where they can go. Boat handling and manoeuvring are covered in detail, along with maintenance and repair. And there is a section on trailer boating for those who want to keep their boat at home, advice on living aboard for long periods, night-time navigation and training. This is the only book novices will need to take their first steps afloat, and it is the one they will keep by them throughout their boating years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 6,000km of navigable waterways, the Netherlands offers one of the most extensive yet compact cruising grounds in Europe. This book is a user's guide to the whole network, covering all the mast-up routes and excluding only those waterways which offer less than 3.5m bridge height. Navigational details are provided for each waterway, comprising dimensions and obstacles to be expected, including service arrangements for bridges and locks. This is followed by details of over 300 stopping places across all 12 provinces; some which are large or popular harbours, and others which are well off the beaten track. Comments on the significant features are expanded for nearly 100 'principal venues' where more details on things to do and see are provided, as well as information on practical facilities ashore and the authors' selective and subjective restaurant tips! The book is designed to be of interest to all crew members, not just the skipper or navigator, whether its to establish how to approach a place, or to discover what to do or see of interest on arrival. Easy to browse, the book's illustrations have been selected to give a flavour of this water-loving country as well as to prepare the visiting yachtsman, whether under power or sail. This second edition has been updated with amendments to the text and maps. There are also many new photos by the authors. Louise Busby's interest in boating has led to commissions for Motor Boats Monthly as well as the Cruising Association's magazine. She is a former CA regional Almanac editor for the Netherlands and Belgium.David Broad is a detailed journal writer and log keeper, many of David's notes and sketches have been used in the compilation of this book. He is a Council member of the Cruising Association and the Chairman of the Broom Owners Club. A website, which is a useful annexe to the book, is kept up to date with details of changes to the waterways along with useful links to further information. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Container Terminals (CT) operate as central nodes in worldwide hub-and-spoke networks and link ocean-going vessels with smaller feeder vessels as well as with inbound and outbound hinterland transportation systems using road, rail, or inland waterways. The volume of transcontinental container flows has gained appreciably over the last five decades -- throughput figures of CT reached new records, frequently with double-digit annual growth rates. Stimulated by throughput requirements and stronger competition between terminals settled in the same region or serving a similar hinterland, respectively, cost efficiency and throughput capabilities become more and more important. Nowadays, both terminal capacity and costs have to be regarded as key indicators for CT competitiveness. In respect of this steady growth, this handbook focuses on planning activities being aimed at “order of magnitude improvements” in terminal performance and economic viability. On the one hand the book is intended to provide readership with technological and organizational CT basics for strategic planning. On the other hand this book offers methodical assistance for fundamental dimensioning of CT in terms of 'technique', 'organization' or 'man'. The former primarily considers comprehensive information about container handling technologies representing the state of the art for present terminal operations, while the latter refers to methodological support comprising in particular quantitative solutions and modeling techniques for strategic terminal decisions as well as straightforward design guidelines. The handbook includes an introductory contribution which gives an overview of strategic planning problems at CT and introduces the contributions of the volume with regard to their relationship in this field. Moreover, each paper contains a section or paragraph that describes the impact of findings investigated by the author(s) for problem-solving in long-term planning of CT (as an application domain). The handbook intends to provide solutions and insights that are valuable for both practitioners in industry who need effective planning approaches to overcome problems and weaknesses in terminal design/development and researchers who would like to inform themselves about the state of the art in methodology of strategic terminal planning or be inspired by new ideas. That is to say, the handbook is addressed to terminal planners in practice as well as to students of maritime courses of study and (application oriented) researchers in the maritime field.

This book was released on 2023-02-07 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2022, third edition of RYA European Waterways Regulation has been updated to match CEVNI 6, the new version of the code governing navigation on some of the European inland waterways. Covering subject areas such as Basic Rules, Visual Signs, Buoyage, Designated Areas, Sound Signals and more, this is the ideal book for those wanting to pass the CEVNI test, a legal requirement for those cruising the European inland waterways. Other edition updates include: • Changes to the introduction to clarify how CEVNI applies to those using European inland waterways. • Updates to terminology, lights and signage to reflect CEVNI version 6. • Regulation changes are now reflected in the text. The CEVNI code was devised by the United Nations in 1985 and governs navigation on all interconnected European inland waterways. It was established to enable boatmen of all nationalities to communicate, and to understand what is going on without the need to speak each other’s language. By law, all those cruising on European inland waterways must have passed the CEVNI test and have a reference copy onboard. Knowledgeable author Tam Murrell has been cruising since the late 1950’s, working with narrow boats and barges on UK inland waters, to small coasters trading in and around the Thames estuary and into Northern Europe. Since 1995, Tam and his wife have spent much of their time on continental waterways on their 24m Dutch barge. As the RYA’s supporting material for the CEVNI test, RYA European Waterways Regulation is the ideal book for those wanting to cruise the inland waterways of Europe.
