Book excerpt: In his square-sterned canoe, Alaskan author Dan O'Neill set off down the majestic Yukon River, beginning at Dawson, Yukon Territory, site of the Klondike gold rush. The journey he makes to Circle City, Alaska, is more than a voyage into northern wilderness, it is an expedition into the history of the river and a record of the inimitable inhabitants of the region, historic and contemporary. A literary kin of John Muir's Travels in Alaska and John McPhee's Coming into the Country, A Land Gone Lonesome is the book on Alaska for the new century. Though he treks through a beautiful and hostile wilderness, the heart of O'Neill's story is his exploration of the lives of a few tough souls clinging to the old ways-even as government policies are extinguishing their way of life. More than just colorful anachronisms, these wilderness dwellers-both men and women-are a living archive of North American pioneer values. As O'Neill encounters these natives, he finds himself drawn into the bare-knuckle melodrama of frontier life-and further back still into the very origins of the Yukon river world. With the rare perspective of an insider, O'Neill here gives us an intelligent, lyrical-and ultimately, probably the last-portrait of the river people along the upper Yukon.

It is Stevenson's earliest book and a pioneering work of outdoor literature. As a young man, Stevenson desired to be financially independent so that he might pursue the woman he loved, and set about funding his freedom from parental support by writing travelogues, the three most prominent being An Inland Voyage, Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes (1879) and The Silverado Squatters (1883). Voyage was undertaken with Stevenson's Scottish friend Sir Walter Grindlay Simpson, mostly along the Oise River from Belgium through France, in the Fall of 1876 when Stevenson was 26 years old. The first part, in Belgium, passed through heavily industrial areas and many canal locks, proving to be not much of a vacation. They then went by rail to France, starting downriver at Maubeuge and ending at Pontoise, close to the Seine. The route itinerary has become a popular route for modern travelers to re-enact with guidebooks and maps available."

Book excerpt: An Inland Voyage is a travelogue about a canoeing trip through France and Belgium in 1876. It is Stevenson's earliest book and of the earliest works of outdoor literature. The voyage was started with Stevenson's Scottish friend Sir Walter Grindlay Simpson, mainly along the Oise River from Belgium through France, in the Fall of 1876. Stevenson was named Arethusa in the book, and Simpson was called Cigarette. They both had a wooden canoe comparable in style to a modern kayak. They were narrow, decked, and paddled with double-bladed paddles, a technique that had recently become famous in England, France, and neighboring countries. Outdoor travel for leisure was uncommon during that time because of which the two Scotsmen were often mistaken for traveling salesmen, but the uniqueness of their canoes would bring entire villages out and wave at them. Much of the travelogue describes the two men's adventures during the trip. Stevenson also depicts many intriguing people he and Simpson met. These included the Royal Sport Nautique members and a family that lived on a barge.

The circle at once widened round us, and our offers of reward were received in dispiriting silence. We were plainly a pair of Bluebeards to the children; they might speak to us in public places, and where they had the advantage of numbers; but it was another thing to venture off alone with two uncouth and legendary characters, who had dropped from the clouds upon their hamlet this quiet afternoon, sashed and beknived, and with a flavor of great voyages.-from "Pont-sur-Sambre: We Are Peddlers"The sly wit and keenly observant eye that makes Robert Louis Stevenson a continuing favorite with readers is in full force in this 1913 volume, a compilation of two of the writer's least known but most purely enjoyable works. In 1876, Stevenson canoed through Belgium and France with his friend, Sir Walter Simpson, an exploit that resulted in the delightful An Inland Voyage; two years later, he took a walking tour of the C vannes, which became Travels with a Donkey. More that just wonderfully escapist, these essays offer a glimpse into the mind and memories of an author's imagination, and serve as a vital psychological backdrop for the tales of adventure, romance, and horror related in Stevenson's fiction.OF INTEREST TO: Stevenson fans, armchair travelers, readers of classic British literatureAlso available from Cosimo Classics: Stevenson's Across the Plains: With Other Memories and Essays.

Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-This book contains a historical context, where past events or the study and narration of these events are examined. The historical context refers to the circumstances and incidents surrounding an event. This context is formed by everything that, in some way, influences the event when it happens. A fact is always tied to its time: that is, to its characteristics. Therefore, when analyzing events that took place tens, hundreds or thousands of years ago, it is essential to know the historical context to understand them. Otherwise, we would be analyzing and judging what happened in a totally different era with a current perspective. An Inland Voyage by Robert Louis StevensonIt is a novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson about a canoe trip through France and Belgium in 1876. It was one of Stevenson's first works and the first about travel. In his youth, Stevenson always wanted to be financially independent so that he could follow the woman he loved, and he set out to create his economic freedom by writing travel stories, the first being A Trip to the Continent, Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes (1879). and The Silverado Squatters (1883).Stevenson made his journey with his friend Sir Walter Grindlay Simpson, mainly along the Oise River from Belgium to France.
