Book Synopsis Discovering the Brain by : National Academy of Sciences
Download or read book Discovering the Brain written by National Academy of Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brain ... There is no other part of the human anatomy that is so intriguing. How does it develop and function and why does it sometimes, tragically, degenerate? The answers are complex. In Discovering the Brain, science writer Sandra Ackerman cuts through the complexity to bring this vital topic to the public. The 1990s were declared the "Decade of the Brain" by former President Bush, and the neuroscience community responded with a host of new investigations and conferences. Discovering the Brain is based on the Institute of Medicine conference, Decade of the Brain: Frontiers in Neuroscience and Brain Research. Discovering the Brain is a "field guide" to the brainâ€"an easy-to-read discussion of the brain's physical structure and where functions such as language and music appreciation lie. Ackerman examines: How electrical and chemical signals are conveyed in the brain. The mechanisms by which we see, hear, think, and pay attentionâ€"and how a "gut feeling" actually originates in the brain. Learning and memory retention, including parallels to computer memory and what they might tell us about our own mental capacity. Development of the brain throughout the life span, with a look at the aging brain. Ackerman provides an enlightening chapter on the connection between the brain's physical condition and various mental disorders and notes what progress can realistically be made toward the prevention and treatment of stroke and other ailments. Finally, she explores the potential for major advances during the "Decade of the Brain," with a look at medical imaging techniquesâ€"what various technologies can and cannot tell usâ€"and how the public and private sectors can contribute to continued advances in neuroscience. This highly readable volume will provide the public and policymakersâ€"and many scientists as wellâ€"with a helpful guide to understanding the many discoveries that are sure to be announced throughout the "Decade of the Brain."

Book Synopsis Magnesium in the Central Nervous System by : Robert Vink
Download or read book Magnesium in the Central Nervous System written by Robert Vink and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brain is the most complex organ in our body. Indeed, it is perhaps the most complex structure we have ever encountered in nature. Both structurally and functionally, there are many peculiarities that differentiate the brain from all other organs. The brain is our connection to the world around us and by governing nervous system and higher function, any disturbance induces severe neurological and psychiatric disorders that can have a devastating effect on quality of life. Our understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the brain has improved dramatically in the last two decades. In particular, the critical role of cations, including magnesium, has become evident, even if incompletely understood at a mechanistic level. The exact role and regulation of magnesium, in particular, remains elusive, largely because intracellular levels are so difficult to routinely quantify. Nonetheless, the importance of magnesium to normal central nervous system activity is self-evident given the complicated homeostatic mechanisms that maintain the concentration of this cation within strict limits essential for normal physiology and metabolism. There is also considerable accumulating evidence to suggest alterations to some brain functions in both normal and pathological conditions may be linked to alterations in local magnesium concentration. This book, containing chapters written by some of the foremost experts in the field of magnesium research, brings together the latest in experimental and clinical magnesium research as it relates to the central nervous system. It offers a complete and updated view of magnesiums involvement in central nervous system function and in so doing, brings together two main pillars of contemporary neuroscience research, namely providing an explanation for the molecular mechanisms involved in brain function, and emphasizing the connections between the molecular changes and behavior. It is the untiring efforts of those magnesium researchers who have dedicated their lives to unraveling the mysteries of magnesiums role in biological systems that has inspired the collation of this volume of work.
Book Synopsis Neurology for Nurses by : J Bickerton
Download or read book Neurology for Nurses written by J Bickerton and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurology for Nurses is an attempt to make neurology as clear as possible, using the nursing model. The first portion of this book provides a diagram of the planes of the body that considers the nervous system anatomically, which is referenced throughout the book. The different orientations and planes of the body include the anterior (ventral) surface, posterior (dorsal) surface, lateral, medial, sagittal (median) section, Coronal (frontal) section, and transverse. Other than detailed descriptions of the anatomy and functions of nerves and the nervous system, this book provides diagnostic evaluation of diseases and clinical conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, cerebrovascular accidents, brain tumors, head injury, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and meningitis. This book includes as well discussions on neurological examinations, investigations, and observations. The topic on nursing care for unconscious patients is also provided. This text is aimed primarily at nursing students in training, but will also benefits those taking a post-basic nursing course in neurology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of practice and theory in both neural specialties, encouraging a broader therapeutic approach to problems such as movement disorders and intractable pain. The concept of this book is to merge neurological and neurosurgical principles and practice, for improved patient care. This includes a review of the basic neurosciences, especially neurogenetics. Details of the neurological examination and neurodiagnostic studies are oriented to specific clinical factors. Attention is directed to advances in molecular biology in the current research in metabolic disorders affecting the neurological system. There is a comprehensive approach to demyelinating diseases and dementia, as well as practical aspects in the diagnosis and management of neurological disorders caused by trauma, vascular lesions, neoplasms and infection. The goal is to share the expertise of both neural specialties in therapy of problems such as movement disorders and intractable pain. A general need for the above has become apparent, in an era of an aging population and increased incidence of neurological disorders. Frank P. Smith, MD, is Professor of Neurosurgery Emeritus, University of Rochester Medical Center

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of yearly books on Advances in Neurotraumatology is being published under the auspices of the Scientific Committee of Neuro traumatology of the World Federation of Neurological Surgeons. For some years neurotraumatology was perhaps too much looked upon as a secondary part of neurosurgery. But the constant increase of cases has provoked a renewal of interest all over the world, involving not only neurosurgeons but also any surgeon who has to take care of such patients. Each volume, in order to cover the whole of neurosurgery, will be concerned with a special topic, the various chapters of which being envisaged in detail, and followed by a practical "How to do it". Every volume will also contain chapters outside the envisaged topic regarding some up-to-date problems. The authors, chosen from various countries for their special competence, will try to offer an efficient contribution to the knowledge of neuro traumatology, and also to present a bedside series of handy books helping those who tend these cases. The first volume will deal with "Extracerebral Collections", the second "Dorsal and Lumbar Spine and Spinal Cord Injuries", the third "Cerebral Contusions, Lacerations and Hematomas", and the next ones will continue to successively approach all the other neurotraumatological topics.
