Book excerpt: Autobiography of David Burns, 1928-1949. Book-obsessed childhood in the Depression in a small town in Kentucky; running away from home on his 15th birthday; three years in Washington in Capitol Page School, dropping out many times, never completing first semester of tenth grade; copy boy and photographer's apprentice at The Evening Star newspaper; three years in the Air Force. Managing somehow to be admitted to Princeton. The autobiography is interspersed with four vivid chapters of imaginary ancestors: Long Hunters in 18th century Kentucky; pioneers on The Wilderness Road from Cumberland Gap; building gristmills and sawmills; and the legacy of coal mining… which has left much of Appalachia, land AND people, 'HOLLOWED OUT'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native American sports team mascots represent a contemporary problem for modern Native American people. The ideas embedded in the mascot representations, however, are as old as the ideas constructed about the Indian since contact between the peoples of Western and the Eastern hemispheres. Such ideas conceived about Native Americans go hand-in-hand with the machinations of colonialism and conquest of these people. This research looks at how such ideas inform the construction of identity of white males from historic experiences with Native Americans. Notions of “playing Indian” and of “going Native” are precipitated from these historic contexts such that in the contemporary sense of considering Native Americans, popular culture ideas dress Native Americans in feathers and buckskin in order to satisfy stereotypic expectations of Indian-ness.

Book excerpt: Civilized Blacks: Free American Negroes in the 1870’s Whose Lives Paralleled the Life of Booker T. Washington is a work of creative historical fiction designed to illuminate a commonly ignored segment of the African-American experience. Drawing on the life and work of Booker T. Washington, author Carol Binta has portrayed the trials and achievements, as well as the daily lives, of the Black American elite culture of the period. With an engaging and realistic cast of characters, she portrays accurate social structures and customs while drawing the reader into the tale she has created. Particularly striking is the emphasis on Washington’s affirming attitude toward women. Both entertaining and enlightening, Civilized Blacks: Free American Negroes in the 1870’s Whose Lives Paralleled the Life of Booker T. Washington offers a new perspective on this often forgotten portion of history.
