Book excerpt: One of the first detailed expositions of partial algebras, this book develops a special theory of partial algebras as a powerful foundation of a model theoretic, initial semantics of algebraic specification languages. Professor Reichel explores the possibility of increasing the use of partial algebras, particularly in computer science. He presents examples of algebraic specifications of increasing complexity and proves that structural induction can yield a complete calculus of abstract programs on parameterized abstract data types. Finally, he extends the model-theoretic initial semantics of abstract data types with partial operations to behavioral semantics.

Book excerpt: Algebraic specification, nondeterminism and term rewriting are three active research areas aiming at concepts for the abstract description of software systems: Algebraic specifications are well-suited for describing data structures and sequential software systems in an abstract way. Term rewriting methods are used in many prototyping systems and form the basis for executing specifi cations. Nondeterminism plays a major role in formal language theory; in programming it serves for delaying design decisions in program development and occurs in a "natural" way in formalisations of distributed processes. Heinrich Hussmann presents an elegant extension of equational specification and term rewriting to include nondeterminism. Based on a clean modeltheoretic semantics he considers term rewriting systems without confluence restrictions as a specification language and shows that fundamental properties such as the existence of initial models or the soundness and completeness of narrowing, the basic mechanism for executing equational specifications, can be extended to nondeterministic computations. The work of Heinrich Hussmann is an excellent contribution to Algebraic Programming; it gives a framework that admits a direct approach to program verification, is suitable for describing concurrent and distributed processes, and it can be executed as fast as Prolog.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 16th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science, MFCS '91, held in Kazimierz Dolny, Poland, September 9-13, 1991. The series of MFCS symposia, organized alternately in Poland and Czechoslovakia since 1972, has a long and well established tradition. The purpose of the series is to encourage high-quality research in all branches of theoretical computer science and to bring together specialists working actively in the area. Principal areas of interest in this symposium include: software specification and development, parallel and distributed computing, logic and semantics of programs, algorithms, automata and formal languages, complexity and computability theory, and others. The volume contains 5 invited papers by distinguished scientists and 38 contributions selected from a total of 109 submitted papers.

Book excerpt: The goal of the AMAST conferences is to foster algebraic methodology as a foundation for software technology, and to show that this can lead to practical mathematical alternatives to the ad-hoc approaches commonly used in software engineering and development. The first two AMAST conferences, held in May 1989 and May 1991 at the University of Iowa, were well received and encouraged the regular organization of further AMAST conferences on a biennial schedule. The third Conference on Algebraic Methodology and Software Technology was held in the campus of the University of Twente, The Netherlands, during the first week of Summer 1993. Nearly a hundred people from all continents attended the conference. The largest interest received by the AMAST conference among the professionals extended to include the administration organizations as well. AMAST'93 was opened by the Rector of the University of Twente, followed by the Local Chairman. Their opening addresses open this proceedings, too. The proceedings contains 8 invited papers and 32 selected communica tions. The selection was very strict, for 121 submissions were received.

Book excerpt: This book provides foundations for software specification and formal software development from the perspective of work on algebraic specification, concentrating on developing basic concepts and studying their fundamental properties. These foundations are built on a solid mathematical basis, using elements of universal algebra, category theory and logic, and this mathematical toolbox provides a convenient language for precisely formulating the concepts involved in software specification and development. Once formally defined, these notions become subject to mathematical investigation, and this interplay between mathematics and software engineering yields results that are mathematically interesting, conceptually revealing, and practically useful. The theory presented by the authors has its origins in work on algebraic specifications that started in the early 1970s, and their treatment is comprehensive. This book contains five kinds of material: the requisite mathematical foundations; traditional algebraic specifications; elements of the theory of institutions; formal specification and development; and proof methods. While the book is self-contained, mathematical maturity and familiarity with the problems of software engineering is required; and in the examples that directly relate to programming, the authors assume acquaintance with the concepts of functional programming. The book will be of value to researchers and advanced graduate students in the areas of programming and theoretical computer science.

Book excerpt: Nowadays algebra is understood basically as the general theory of algebraic oper ations and relations. It is characterised by a considerable intrinsic naturalness of its initial notions and problems, the unity of its methods, and a breadth that far exceeds that of its basic concepts. It is more often that its power begins to be displayed when one moves outside its own limits. This characteristic ability is seen when one investigates not only complete operations, but partial operations. To a considerable extent these are related to algebraic operators and algebraic operations. The tendency to ever greater generality is amongst the reasons that playa role in explaining this development. But other important reasons play an even greater role. Within this same theory of total operations (that is, operations defined everywhere), there persistently arises in its different sections a necessity of examining the emergent feature of various partial operations. It is particularly important that this has been found in those parts of algebra it brings together and other areas of mathematics it interacts with as well as where algebra finds applica tion at the very limits of mathematics. In this connection we mention the theory of the composition of mappings, category theory, the theory of formal languages and the related theory of mathematical linguistics, coding theory, information theory, and algebraic automata theory. In all these areas (as well as in others) from time to time there arises the need to consider one or another partial operation.

Book excerpt: This volume contains selected papers presented at the seventeenth Colloquiumon Trees in Algebra and Programming (CAAP) held jointly with the European Symposium on Programming (ESOP) in Rennes, France, February 26-28, 1992 (the proceedings of ESOP appear in LNCS 582). The previous colloquia were held in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Denmark and England. Every even year, as in 1992, CAAP is held jointly with ESOP; every other year, it is part of TAPSOFT (Theory And Practice of SOFTware development). In the beginning, CAAP was devoted to algebraic and combinatorial properties of trees and their role in various fields of computer science. The scope of CAAP has now been extended to other discrete structures, like graphs, equations and transformations of graphs, and their links with logical theories. The programme committee received 40 submissions, from which 19 papers have been selected for inclusion inthis volume.

This book was released on 1991-06-26 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods for the algebraic specification of abstract data types were proposed in the early 1970s in the USA and Canada and became a major research issue in Europe shortly afterwards. Since then the algebraic approach has come to play a central role in research on formal specification and development, as its range of applications was extended to the specification of complete software systems, to the formal description of the program development process, and to the uniform definition of syntax and semantics of programming languages. Today this approach extends beyond just software to the development of integrated hardware and software systems. These flourishing activities in the area of algebraic specifications have led to an abundance of approaches, theories and concepts, which have universal algebra, category theory and logic as a common mathematical basis. This volume is an annotated bibliography which provides an up-to-date overview of past and present work on algebraic specification. No attempt is made to provide a coherent introduction to the topic for beginners; the intention is rather to provide a guide to the current literature for researchers in algebraic specification and neighboring fields. Some indications of how the different approaches are related are included, together with some ideas concerning possible future directions.
