Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with initial boundary value problems for incompletely parabolic systems of partial differential equations. Such systems can be described as a second order Petrovskii parabolic system and a first order hyperbolic system coupled together by terms with first order spatial derivatives. The dependent variables are then of either parabolic or hyperbolic type. Examples are the equations for couple sound and heat flow and the viscous shallow water equations.
Book Synopsis Initial-boundary Value Problems and the Navier-Stokes Equations by : Heinz-Otto Kreiss
Download or read book Initial-boundary Value Problems and the Navier-Stokes Equations written by Heinz-Otto Kreiss and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This book provides an introduction to the vast subject of initial and initial-boundary value problems for PDEs, with an emphasis on applications to parabolic and hyperbolic systems. The Navier-Stokes equations for compressible and incompressible flows are taken as an example to illustrate the results. Researchers and graduate students in applied mathematics and engineering will find Initial-Boundary Value Problems and the Navier-Stokes Equations invaluable. The subjects addressed in the book, such as the well-posedness of initial-boundary value problems, are of frequent interest when PDEs are used in modeling or when they are solved numerically. The reader will learn what well-posedness or ill-posedness means and how it can be demonstrated for concrete problems. There are many new results, in particular on the Navier-Stokes equations. The direct approach to the subject still gives a valuable introduction to an important area of applied analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present monograph is devoted to the theory of general parabolic boundary value problems. The vastness of this theory forced us to take difficult decisions in selecting the results to be presented and in determining the degree of detail needed to describe their proofs. In the first chapter we define the basic notions at the origin of the theory of parabolic boundary value problems and give various examples of illustrative and descriptive character. The main part of the monograph (Chapters II to V) is devoted to a the detailed and systematic exposition of the L -theory of parabolic 2 boundary value problems with smooth coefficients in Hilbert spaces of smooth functions and distributions of arbitrary finite order and with some natural appli cations of the theory. Wishing to make the monograph more informative, we included in Chapter VI a survey of results in the theory of the Cauchy problem and boundary value problems in the traditional spaces of smooth functions. We give no proofs; rather, we attempt to compare different results and techniques. Special attention is paid to a detailed analysis of examples illustrating and complementing the results for mulated. The chapter is written in such a way that the reader interested only in the results of the classical theory of the Cauchy problem and boundary value problems may concentrate on it alone, skipping the previous chapters.

Download or read book Linear and Quasilinear Parabolic Systems: Sobolev Space Theory written by David Hoff and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-11-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a systematic theory of weak solutions in Hilbert-Sobolev spaces of initial-boundary value problems for parabolic systems of partial differential equations with general essential and natural boundary conditions and minimal hypotheses on coefficients. Applications to quasilinear systems are given, including local existence for large data, global existence near an attractor, the Leray and Hopf theorems for the Navier-Stokes equations and results concerning invariant regions. Supplementary material is provided, including a self-contained treatment of the calculus of Sobolev functions on the boundaries of Lipschitz domains and a thorough discussion of measurability considerations for elements of Bochner-Sobolev spaces. This book will be particularly useful both for researchers requiring accessible and broadly applicable formulations of standard results as well as for students preparing for research in applied analysis. Readers should be familiar with the basic facts of measure theory and functional analysis, including weak derivatives and Sobolev spaces. Prior work in partial differential equations is helpful but not required.

Download or read book Nonlinear Parabolic Equations and Hyperbolic-Parabolic Coupled Systems written by Songmu Zheng and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to the global existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behaviour of smooth solutions to both initial value problems and initial boundary value problems for nonlinear parabolic equations and hyperbolic parabolic coupled systems. Most of the material is based on recent research carried out by the author and his collaborators. The book can be divided into two parts. In the first part, the results on decay of solutions to nonlinear parabolic equations and hyperbolic parabolic coupled systems are obtained, and a chapter is devoted to the global existence of small smooth solutions to fully nonlinear parabolic equations and quasilinear hyperbolic parabolic coupled systems. Applications of the results to nonlinear thermoelasticity and fluid dynamics are also shown. Some nonlinear parabolic equations and coupled systems arising from the study of phase transitions are investigated in the second part of the book. The global existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behaviour of smooth solutions with arbitrary initial data are obtained. The final chapter is further devoted to related topics: multiplicity of equilibria and the existence of a global attractor, inertial manifold and inertial set. A knowledge of partial differential equations and Sobolev spaces is assumed. As an aid to the reader, the related concepts and results are collected and the relevant references given in the first chapter. The work will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics and applied sciences.
Book Synopsis Polynomial Chaos Methods for Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations by : Mass Per Pettersson
Download or read book Polynomial Chaos Methods for Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations written by Mass Per Pettersson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents computational techniques and numerical analysis to study conservation laws under uncertainty using the stochastic Galerkin formulation. With the continual growth of computer power, these methods are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to more classical sampling-based techniques. The text takes advantage of stochastic Galerkin projections applied to the original conservation laws to produce a large system of modified partial differential equations, the solutions to which directly provide a full statistical characterization of the effect of uncertainties. Polynomial Chaos Methods of Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations focuses on the analysis of stochastic Galerkin systems obtained for linear and non-linear convection-diffusion equations and for a systems of conservation laws; a detailed well-posedness and accuracy analysis is presented to enable the design of robust and stable numerical methods. The exposition is restricted to one spatial dimension and one uncertain parameter as its extension is conceptually straightforward. The numerical methods designed guarantee that the solutions to the uncertainty quantification systems will converge as the mesh size goes to zero. Examples from computational fluid dynamics are presented together with numerical methods suitable for the problem at hand: stable high-order finite-difference methods based on summation-by-parts operators for smooth problems, and robust shock-capturing methods for highly nonlinear problems. Academics and graduate students interested in computational fluid dynamics and uncertainty quantification will find this book of interest. Readers are expected to be familiar with the fundamentals of numerical analysis. Some background in stochastic methods is useful but notnecessary.

This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initial-Boundary Value Problems and the Navier-Stokes Equations gives an introduction to the vast subject of initial and initial-boundary value problems for PDEs. Applications to parabolic and hyperbolic systems are emphasized in this text. The Navier-Stokes equations for compressible and incompressible flows are taken as an example to illustrate the results. The subjects addressed in the book, such as the well-posedness of initial-boundary value problems, are of frequent interest when PDEs are used in modeling or when they are solved numerically. The book explains the principles of these subjects. The reader will learn what well-posedness or ill-posedness means and how it can be demonstrated for concrete problems. Audience: when the book was written, the main intent was to write a text on initial-boundary value problems that was accessible to a rather wide audience. Functional analytical prerequisites were kept to a minimum or were developed in the book. Boundary conditions are analyzed without first proving trace theorems, and similar simplifications have been used throughout. This book continues to be useful to researchers and graduate students in applied mathematics and engineering.
Book Synopsis Analysis of Charge Transport by : Joseph W. Jerome
Download or read book Analysis of Charge Transport written by Joseph W. Jerome and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the mathematical aspects of semiconductor modeling, with particular attention focused on the drift-diffusion model. The aim is to provide a rigorous basis for those models which are actually employed in practice, and to analyze the approximation properties of discretization procedures. The book is intended for applied and computational mathematicians, and for mathematically literate engineers, who wish to gain an understanding of the mathematical framework that is pertinent to device modeling. The latter audience will welcome the introduction of hydrodynamic and energy transport models in Chap. 3. Solutions of the nonlinear steady-state systems are analyzed as the fixed points of a mapping T, or better, a family of such mappings, distinguished by system decoupling. Significant attention is paid to questions related to the mathematical properties of this mapping, termed the Gummel map. Compu tational aspects of this fixed point mapping for analysis of discretizations are discussed as well. We present a novel nonlinear approximation theory, termed the Kras nosel'skii operator calculus, which we develop in Chap. 6 as an appropriate extension of the Babuska-Aziz inf-sup linear saddle point theory. It is shown in Chap. 5 how this applies to the semiconductor model. We also present in Chap. 4 a thorough study of various realizations of the Gummel map, which includes non-uniformly elliptic systems and variational inequalities. In Chap.

This book was released on 2012-01-26 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research monograph deals with a modeling theory of the system of Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations for a Newtonian fluid governing a compressible viscous and heat conducting flows. The main objective is threefold. First , to 'deconstruct' this Navier-Stokes-Fourier system in order to unify the puzzle of the various partial simplified approximate models used in Newtonian Classical Fluid Dynamics and this, first facet, have obviously a challenging approach and a very important pedagogic impact on the university education. The second facet of the main objective is to outline a rational consistent asymptotic/mathematical theory of the of fluid flows modeling on the basis of a typical Navier-Stokes-Fourier initial and boundary value problem. The third facet is devoted to an illustration of our rational asymptotic/mathematical modeling theory for various technological and geophysical stiff problems from: aerodynamics, thermal and thermocapillary convections and also meteofluid dynamics.
